Quoting: detroutThe Register argued that the year of the "Linux" desktop came but no one noticed because it was called ChromeOS.

Though that does suggest we might start seeing a larger share of Linux family steam users as Steam for ChromeOS gets to be more popular.
Except that ChromeOS is not actually Linux despite having the Linux kernel.
ChromeOS is not a community based free & open source desktop, but it's "technically" linux.

The claim is technically true, but in a deeply obnoxious and irritating way for those of us who want free desktops.
Then why did Valve need to release a special version of Steam for it if it was "technically linux"?

what happened? a year with no GOL news?

sure... its atari, cant be trusted
Glad you raised the question, I was wondering what's happening with the VCS. Is it still selling? Are there new updates and game releases going out for it?
Yup, new games are steadily being released (see above post about 7800 drops). The Recharged series are being released cross platform, but the VCS versions have some extra stuff to them.

Nice. Any idea how it's selling? Does it seem like it's going to be a successful business? I wish their games store is available in a web form so we can access it from any browser.
Kind of hard to tell how well it's selling. I guess I could ask on their Discord.

I agree, it actually is something that irritates me, their store on the machine is rather... crap. They don't have a 'cart' yet, so you can't buy more than one game at a time. Since I don't trust anyone with my CC, I use a service that will randomly generate a card for you and you can set monthly limits. There are a huge number of nitwits who continually bash the system and say there is no point and you may as well buy a Raspberry Pi... forgetting the fact that it's impossible to get an RPi that is upgradable at all, let alone to 32gb of RAM.

It has pretty decent performance, which you can tweak once you unlock the bios. But for the most part it's just a mini computer with a very stylish case. It's what the Steam Machines should have been.

There have been some crazy sales on it, which the 'haters' insisted was because they're being dumped before discontinued. But so far Atari has actually held up all of their promises (eventually). It is indeed a 'streaming' machine, as you can get xbox game pass, Geforce Now (something I don't think even the Deck officially has yet?) and Stadia, etc.

It's too bad Liam didn't get a hold of one, as it's definitely a 'Linux Game Console' at heart.
I guess it's a very small company, so the shortcomings on the software side is kinda expected, but I think they seriously should make their store available on the web even if it's only for listing what's on the system without actually being able to buy anything through the website.
I think at this point they just need to survive. If they do they can come up with a new iteration that is more powerful and can improve their software situation a bit.
Can you run Steam on their OS without installing a different distro? Also, how compatible is their OS with regular Linux distros, can you for example somehow copy an AppImage and have it run on their OS?

Unlikely, given the rate at which Steam Decks are manufactured. Unless if users start installing Linux on their own machines.

An interview with Ken VanDine, Ubuntu desktop lead at Canonical

"I’d say people should choose Ubuntu if their priority is a Linux desktop that just works"

As a Linux user who have tried many distros, I approve this statement. Ubuntu is really the best when it comes to needing something that just works in different edge cases. For example, switching between nVidia performance/on-demand just works on Ubuntu whereas in Fedora you need some more manual steps. Another example is Virtual Box's guest tools which installs smoothly on Ubuntu out of the box, whereas Fedora would require some additional steps before the tools are installable. And there are many other similar examples where an additional step is needed in other distros whereas in Ubuntu those additional steps are done for you upfront by Ubuntu. Nothing major, just small things here and there, but for someone who doesn't want to worry about these small things Ubuntu is a good choice.

Very unexpected to see them choosing PopOS. It looks like the Cosmic desktop is attracting some people already.

NVIDIA releases open source Linux GPU kernel modules, Beta Driver 515.43.04 out

Quoting: emptythevoidNot related to the hackers that demanded nvidia open source their drivers, right?
Either that or IBM/Redhat threw oodles of money at them.
I would guess it's neither. My guess is that it's the rising competition from AMD and now Intel, both of which have their drivers upstreamed in the Linux kernel so it's easier to maintain cloud servers running AMD/Intel than nVidia.

Quoting: ripperIt's a great step forward. But don't have overly high expectations. Christian's blogpost summarizes it well. This is just the kernel part, and that's just one piece of the puzzle. Also it's not a true community development repo, they'll only add a single commit for each new release dump, i.e. amdvlk-style. It will certainly help things a lot, but it's definitely not on par with AMD/Intel support for Linux. Hopefully Nvidia continues to improve in this direction.
Still worth the excitement, for two reasons:
1- This hopefully improves the integration of the driver with the rest of the system, and result in less bugs and better handling of different use cases outside of rendering 3D graphics (ex: external monitor, prime and reverse prime, external gpus, etc)
2- This should be a huge help in making Nouveau be in a good shape since they can now depend on proper drivers rather than reverse engineering a black box.
