NVIDIA shows off RTX and DLSS on Arm using Arch Linux, DLSS SDK adds full Linux support

Quoting: Purple Library GuyWhat I'm wondering is if industries like say animation might be looking at moving towards ARM and that might be part of what's driving this kind of thing.
That's a good point. I mean the death of SGI was because Intel+Linux was simply more powerful for lots of $$$ less. If cheap ARM clusters can just offload rendering to racks of GPUs in a data center, it'd be even more profound of a thing. Of course the tools themselves to create the art to send off to the render farms still needs to perform decently enough.

I also wonder how much Microsoft announcing a cloud based Windows version is going to influence things. Or if Microsoft themselves is going to try and kill off installed versions of Windows and just recommend their own Linux to run their cloud Windows... We have weird times ahead.

Humble has a pretty big Starfinder RPG bundle going with physical goodies

Quoting: denyasisI'm sorry, I'm confused. Isn't Starfinder based off Pathfinder like D20 based? I'm not familiar with Gurps, but I thought it was D6, right?

What I was trying to say is that, at least for my friends, Starfinder might be a little to number/mechanic heavy. They did 4e to start, but the math was a turn off for them.
Oh, I thought your comment was about me mentioning GURPS, which people tend to say it has a crunchy feel to it (because it is more of a simulation than a cartoony feel like D&D has become).

You're correct, Starfinder is based on Pathfinder, and Pathfinder (1st edition) is based on D&D 3.5 Edition...

GURPS being d6 based makes it cleaner, I think.

Quoting: denyasisI think it's a little too crunchy for my people. The balked at 4e...

Although, I'm a sucker for a good source book, especially sci Fi. Not a lot of good ones out there... I have to check it out
I will never understand how people think GURPS is too crunchy. It has that reputation, but the various versions of D&D should have the reputation of random rules spread out around so many books that one table is going to run things very different than another.

Well that and the later editions feel like they took the video game idea of a skill tree then added it to the pen and paper games.

GURPS is only as crunchy as you want. Ha, I have been working towards showing GURPS combat vs other RPGs videos. Need to set something up for it soonish. Of course that means I will have to understand other systems.

I like GURPS because the whole system has an amazing consistency and logic to it. Been reading the Pathfinder 2e books, and they just feel all over the place.

4e only seems balked at by 3rd edition die hards, and people who loved Passive Defense (I am one of those and think the feel of the game changes, but there are definitely some nice things about 4e.)

Quoting: slaapliedjeHas anyone tried Proton for "outside Steam" with Launchbox / BigBox game launcher? We need a utility of this caliber on Linux. This is your "UI for Steam Deck that works with all the stores / emulators" check out videos on YouTube. There is a thread on trying to get it working with Wine...

Proton runs perfectly fine from console. I do it with a script

#!/bin/sh
mkdir -p $(pwd)/wineprefix
export STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH="$HOME/.steam/steam"
STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=$(pwd)/wineprefix ~/.steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ -\ Experimental/proton run MonolithBay/Binaries/Win64/MonolithBay-Win64-Shipping.exe

you also can add
export PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1
when you get out of files
Nice, I'll see if I can get that to work... I attempted to add Launchbox in as a non-steam game, got as far as it asking to have .Net Core installed...

I am confused, as I put in all my keys and it never asked for shipping costs. I will have to log in again and see if I just missed something.
I will say if you don't already own anything, the reason they do these is a trap. Dips your toes with physical books... but then you want more... ha, I ended up with a Core book and all the bestiaries for Pathfinder 2nd Edition, and probably have no intention of playing it as I play GURPS pretty exclusively.

Quoting: slaapliedjeSDL2 would be more about whether or not your gamepad worked, vs being able to adjust things, I mean that's kind of up to the program to allow any of that.

But for sure, Steam Input is awesome, and I wish more developers would use it.
Well, I had my issues with the steam controller configuration stuff. If you just need your gamepad or something like that working, it's definitely very good. But for more complicated stuff it just doesn't work. For flight stuff in games, where you need multiple devices working (HOTAS: 2 separate devices: joystick + throttle and rudder pedals and maybe additional control panels) it simply doesn't work. At least it didn't when I was testing it with Arma3 and helicopters which only accepted the Steam controller configuration. It's some time ago I tried last though.
Such a configuration only works for me with games that don't rely on Steam controller config, like: X-Plane, War Thunder, Aerofly FS2.

So if things haven't changed to a much more generic solution by now, it will only work for "simple" games. Sure, it's enough for everything you'd want to play on the Steam Deck, but for Desktop this can be a problem, depending on what kind of games you're into.
I can agree with this. This is also a general area where I will just say Linux sucks... I don't say that often, and one can blane the manufacturer instead. But for me to 'correctly' be able to use my Thrustmaster Warthog, I currently am forced to use Windows, because all the controller scripting has no Linux equivalent.

NVIDIA 470.57.02 released as the next stable Linux driver (updated)

Quoting: Comandante ÑoñardoWeird...
I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and I just got an Nvidia driver update, but it is not the 470.54.02 version, it is the 460.91.03 version...

What is going on with Ubuntu and Nvidia?
This was a security update by the way.

Quoting: slaapliedjeOne thing I will go ahead point out. Native Linux games vs Proton ones usually have a better go out of the box for gamepad support to just work. I have had a few through Proton that were just not detecting the gamepad at all.

Definitely something that needs fixing for this!
One thing that Valve recommends for Proton compatibility is implementing SteamInput, which should be really good for gamepad support. It's not like all Ports magically have great gamepad support :)
SDL2 kind of makes it so they do. :)
Is it that really true? I've seen quite some SDL2 ports that wouldn't let me adjust controls in game (Though maybe mapping in Steam would have been an option). Also, not all ports utilize SDL2, do they? Afaik Unity is the only native engine utilizing it, for example.
Well, I think ports that don't use SDL2 would be similar to making a Windows game without DirectX. Granted at least in Windows if you don't use DirectX, you could use SDL2 instead!

SDL2 would be more about whether or not your gamepad worked, vs being able to adjust things, I mean that's kind of up to the program to allow any of that.
