Distro News - Ubuntu 20.04 'Focal Fossa', Ubuntu MATE and other flavours released

Quoting: SchattenspiegelStill don't see a usecase for snap (or fatpak) on the desktop that would not be better (less time, less space, more reliable functionality) solved by Appimage if you do not get a native package. Trying to push things onto me made me quit the Windows OS and keeps me away from the Gnome DE, just saying Canonical. On the other hand: I like the new icon theme. ;-)
Yeah, I use the Cura Appimage for 3D Printing, it works fine. I'd prefer one updated through apt myself, as that would put it in my Gnome Launcher, instead of me having to dig into Nautilus to click on an Icon, though I used to do that on the Atari ST back in the day, so not sure how that's any different :P

Quoting: slaapliedjeSweet, I will have to see how the eSwap Pro support is working.
Huh, still detects it as a PS4 controller, and on Windows makes things... well kind of like the Steam Controller without Steam loaded, turns it into some weird mouse / keyboard thing that is all wonky.

Quoting: eldakingI'll wait a bit anyway and probably will update to 20.04 if it isn't too obnoxious to avoid snaps for most things, or if at least it works well.
sudo apt purge snapd will get rid of snaps entirely. Easy enough.
Sure, but will any default programs be removed by that - like say, the calculator? (I legit don't know what would happen to installed snaps)

And will the Ubuntu repositories contain non-snap alternatives for stuff? If they stop maintaining stuff in the repos because they now use snaps, it becomes impractical to use the distro without it. (While, presumably, other distros could still have those normally... at least for now)
Hey, thank you both for this! I had a look on my system and sure enough, not only was snapd installed but among the few snaps installed on my system was gnome-calculator. I was wondering why the hell the calculator in Ubuntu took a freaking minute to load. Went ahead and installed the calculator from apt and now it loads in less than a second like a good calculator should... oh, and also I'm removing all of snapd and REPLACING ALL THE OTHER SNAPS WITH PACKAGES THAT ACTUALLY WORK RIGHT. ...And seriously contemplating switching to like, Debian or something.
I have been running Debian Sid for pretty much decades at this point. Sure I've played with other distributions along the way, but mostly stick with Debian Sid. You CAN install snapd and flatpak if you'd like in Debian, but it doesn't try to abuse it's users and force it upon anyone.

FOSS Ultima 7 game engine 'Exult' has a new big stable update after 16 years

Quoting: DesumWith ScummVM integrating Nuvie, I wonder what the odds of bringing Exult in are...
Not just Nuvie [External Link] but also xu4 [External Link] and Pentagram [External Link] (Ultima IV/VI/VIII) and DreamMaster adding his own engine for Ultima in ScummVM as well.
You will notice a pattern on their homepages, that's because Dominus Dragon is involved in all those projects, so he changed all the logos. Him coordinating the new Exult release also has something to do with those assimilations. It's to show to DreamMaster that Exult is still alive and does not need saving like those other dead projects. Besides that, Exult Studio would not fit in ScummVM.
Whoa! When did all this happen? Also, will Roberta then support these integrated into the Steam library? Though I suppose you would need the GOG versions, plus if we can get MT32 support plugged in... maybe I can finally finish all Ultima games in a row like I have been planning to do for years. (Basically bought an Apple IIGS to play the original 1-5 in all their glory).

Ubuntu 20.04 has hit Beta (as have all the extra flavours) - help make it a release to remember

Quoting: RedfaceI do not know how your clock got wrong, but I had it happen a few days ago running an idle 20.04 VM in virtualbox on my desktop which got suspended for quite some hours. After waking it up I tried a apt update in the VM soon after and then I got the same message. The clock was over 6 hours wrong in the VM. After correcting it apt update worked again.
Like everything else in life, I will blame it on Microsoft Teams.

Quoting: Arehandoro8, 16, 24 and 40 GB RAM configuration... Why can't they change the embedded module to 16 to have symmetric RAM on 32GB? That's pretty weird.

I was considering giving it a try even with Intel but not with those configs.
If I were to guesss. It comes with 8gb of RAM soldered to the board.
That way you get 8 (empty slot), 16 (8+8), 24 (8+16), 40 (8+32).
I have an Asus that is that way, though I tried swapping the 8 out with a 16, and while the BIOS saw it, neither Windows nor Linux saw the extra memory.
We know it's soldered to the board - he was asking why can't they solder 16GB to the board instead of 8GB... It's not like RAM is worth all that much these days; even high-end RAM is cheap-ish.
Email them and ask? I asked if one of their systems could support up to 128gb of RAM when I was shopping around for a laptop, and they said it should be able to, but they hadn't tried any 32gb DIMMs yet.

Quoting: benjamimgoisIt's really a amazing work ! the developers are very approachable and easy to talk people. I think that a console experience is what linux need to get out of a niche and get into masses.
Ha, this is what should be on the Atari VCS when/if it releases.
