If I remember well, Windows games purchased on the Linux steam client and played via Steamplay-Proton counts as a Linux purchase...
So, just because of the Proton initiative, this time Valve really deserves the 30% cut of the cake...
I don't know You, but I will buy games for to support the Proton initiative... Dishonored is on the top of my list.

Well... I would like to use a record player with vacuum tubes for to listening 50's music, because that is the right way to do it.. (but, sadly, I don't have one) :(
And I would like to have a celluloid projector for vintage movies and series, but they are unreachable for my wallet.
And yes, If you make a movie that is a tribute to the 80's, a collector's edition in VHS is not a bad idea.

Quoting: FaalhaasThe way I read it, the discussion was about using old technology for retro games. The "high" specs of Ion Maiden were just used as an example for the global discussion.Retro Operative systems: DOS, for example...
If you ask me, retro games can perfectly be made with new technology. Retro is about imitating or being inspired by the past.
Quoting: Comandante ÑoñardoI agree.Like.. watching retro movies on retro-VHS recorders? :) What the hell is a retro operative system anyway? :D
Games with retro graphics must work on retro machines with retro operative systems.
Retro means the game seems old, but actually isn't.

Quoting: GuestI agree.Quoting: GuestQuake engine has linux support so no biggie. oh, if they use VKquake they can take advantage of vulkan. It might be better for them _not_ to use Vulkan though. This is the sort of game that won't be hitting graphics bottlenecks (probably), and they might want to include older machines, or those platforms that don't have Vulkan drivers. Sticking to an OpenGL backend makes more sense in those cases, and gives them a wider audience.

My first incursion with the computers was in the mid 1980's, when they were connected to a normal TV and they used audio cassettes for the software.. I remember using the program LOGO...
Anyway, in 1998 I got my first PC and in those days they called "CPU" to the assembled case (mobo, processor, RAM, disk, video and the optional audio card)

Quoting: NatedawgFunny thing is that if you talk to some older people they call the entire machine a CPU. If you said, "I have 8 CPUs", they would assume you're saying you have 8 entire desktop computers. My computer science teacher when I was in high school used to use that sense of the word. :)I remember that...

Sure, 4K will be an standard in 10 years, but today 1920x1080 is the queen, followed by 1366x768. Developers and game reviewers must take note on that..
A true game reviewer should do the game benchmarks and reviews using a wide variety of hardware .. true reachable hardware and not just the overpriced top cards supplied by an sponsor...
I don't trust in official game requirements because, sometimes, publishers are sponsored by a GPU brand..
I think the same about the CPU side.

Quoting: GuestI always love statistics that prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that 1080p and lower resolutions still form the vast majority of desktop pcs and that only a tiny minority uses 1440p and 4k. Not only Ubuntu's but Steam's statistics are similar.I agree..

Quoting: GuestIt is especially interesting considering that anywhere you look online when gpus are discussed, 99% of the comments speak about the 1080ti and 2080ti and nothing else, that AMD has no viable/competitive product to buy, that they need a 1080ti competitor. I even recall some people on Phoronix forums telling me the same stuff, that they don't consider amd gpus as viable despite the opensource drivers cause they absolutely need 1080ti performance on Linux...I think that the gamers obsessed with the 4K, 1080ti and the 2080ti are trying to compensate something...You know..something physical.

I mean, this is 2018... In this specific industry, the working model where you go to an office and sit in front of a desk fulfilling other people's daily schedules, is obsolete and ineffective...
If someday I have a videogame company with hired people, each one will work at home.
Anyway, back on topic (more or less), the drivers 410.57 were just released for Ubuntu..
I wonder if they will give more performance to my humble GTX 970 than the 396.54 version or if it is more of the same.

Quoting: jensSo you think that other people should work on weekends and omit vacations so that you can lie on your lazy back and play games? C'mon please, give it a rest and show some patience. ;) The speed of progress is already insane lately, please let the developers, contributors and all other people involved have their well deserved nights, weekends and vacations.I was talking about home made software development..

Spoiler, click me
If you have Asperger Syndrome (like me) and You are a software developer, You may want to work at home with your own rules and schedules instead of having to go to an office and be forced to socialize with a bunch of strangers..

I was expecting a Steam Play update soon, given how I've been tracking the commit log seeing Wine and more being updated, didn't quite expect Valve and CodeWeavers to work so quickly and on a weekend too. This should be the standard behaviour in the software development world... Progress don't take weekends or vacations...
