ARK: Survival Evolved plans to use Vulkan for Linux this year
2 Jan 2017 at 4:18 pm UTC

Wait, it's still in Early Access? Didn't realise that. Anyway, the game isn't for me, much too PvP-ish.
But ofcourse I'm not just posting to nag about the game in general. The game world does look wonderful, and I'm very curious if it'll perform admirably under Vulkan. Them getting it right will be a decent drive forward for Vulkan, I assume.

My top list of must-have strategy games on Linux as of right now

So many demons games, so little time.
Seriously, I'm sure I need to check out at least 9 of these 8 titles, but I need time/money. With how much of an EUIV fan I am, I'm scared of trying Stellaris - it sounds like an even bigger time-sink and I do need to sleep every now and then, after all...

BTW as to the whole 'suggest my own favourite'-theme: Battle for Wesnoth. Hands down.

Quoting: liamdaweDoesn't look like I'm getting a review key.

I emailed them directly, included a link to GOL and their reply was essentially "do you have a website", I pointed out the obvious fact that I already sent it to them and then they asked about our traffic. Since then, they didn't reply again.

Looks like I won't be giving this one any thoughts or videos.
Hmm, that's too bad - I was rather curious for this game, but with the slow pace at which my library goes I'd rather stick with games about which you have a decent review.

What have you been playing recently, and what do you think?

Now there's an idea. I've played all official single player campaigns a handful of times, but haven't touched the game since I switched to Linux a few years ago.

HTC Vive VR demo on Linux used Kubuntu at SteamDevDays

I imagine it's due to Kubuntu being a more desktop-friendly OS just to "get it done" until support is properly ready in SteamOS. As for Kubuntu itself, probably just developer-choice.I imagine it's due to Kubuntu being a more desktop-friendly OS just to "get it done" until support is properly ready in SteamOS. My thought exactly. Not too much to read into this: SteamOS isn't for the desktop, Ubuntu and Debian are, and then Kubuntu is probably just the personal preference of the dev that owns this machine/made the demo work.

On the whole, I'm not terribly excited about VR, it doesn't do much for me. But hey, if it's out there and people want it, it's a good thing to have it available on our favourite open/free platform!

Through the Woods no longer coming to Linux due to platform-specific technology

This makes me a very sad panda. I loved the demo, was absolutely stoked for the full version. Your adamant warning about backing stuff was the only thing that saved my money here.

Still, I really wanna play this game and really want them to port it over to Linux after all.

Had to..?

Anyway, this looks awesome. It really needs a split-screen mode, and luckily it has one.

Quoting: buenaventurathe issue of rich people not paying more is not included at all (when that issue is probably (in raw cash) a lot bigger).
That is an issue I'm not touching with a ten foot pole. At least, not on any internet forum, not even GOL's.
Well then I guess you shouldn't touch the inverse either :P

Edit: that is, why is it OK to rant about average people not paying full (or sale) price for a game, but not to rant about rich people not paying a lot more than full price? Especially when the latter problem is, as said, in cash terms likely a lot bigger.
Well then, I'll touch both. Both sides follow human nature in always wanting more and not wanting to give away what they have (maybe some will find these things easier than others, within either side). Both sides should try to learn to be satisfied easier.

And as to the equalisation debate you're hinting at (which is a far broader political discussion): Most civilised countries have that to some extent. When it comes to digital media, as I've alluded to, there's plenty of free things out there. So it's not a matter of making sure average/poor people have enough digital media to have some entertainment need covered, because there's already ways to cover that. Expanding and providing easier access to those free options is something that could be worked on.

*Loving the edit button as well* Final remark about the broader issue: I am in favour of income-based pricing schemes (although I see many practical concerns, I hope we can one day overcome those), but it is just not up to us to set about taking what we feel is a fair price for us. To that point, sales come in handy. Have the money to support a dev for full price? Buy as soon as possible. Don't have that money? Wait for a sale. Until we figure out a way to target sales to groups who 'deserve it' more than others, I'll stick with that. Or with buying less games.
