A general guide for the best practices of buying Linux games

Some of the private entities you mention do not deserve my money (which, again, isn't just about games to me). So then I just do not use their products. Using (for instance) EA's products without paying does nothing for the indie developers that do deserve supporting.

Quoting: buenaventuraWhy yes, I would say it is quite offensive that we have to pay private entities lots of money for what could/should be seen as common goods, such as culture, especially when there is no scarcity (you can make infinite digital copies of a game). It is strange, that people consider it "just so" that people should be discriminated based on income, yet balk at discriminating them based on skin color or gender. As Liam said, it's a matter of having the people that develop those 'common goods' get paid. They aren't paid out of common funds, are they?

As to the whole not-having-money-to-afford-games thing: there's plenty of options for free. The amount of time I've spent on Battle for Wesnoth... I don't wanna think about it. Take 0AD, DOTA, Tesseract, etc.

Quoting: SkarjakI feel that someone could essentially one-up you and ask you why you feel entitled to buy games at sales price, and complain that you are participating in a race to the bottom that is hurting indies. This is exactly why I feel bad about participating in sales. Not just for games, mind you, but also clothes, energy, food etc.

To me, resellers fall in (or atleast worryingly close to) the category of cutting corners for saving money. Usually, someone else will suffer for that. So I will not participate in that. To the extreme: I've gone and waited for a sale to end before buying, just to send the message that I really thought the product worth the original price - and then felt really silly afterwards.
With respect to the whole support the developer thing: If you buy from Feral/Aspyr/VP, then sure, you will support Linux gaming. But I can imagine that smaller developers might have their own store, yet do not have the means to determine if you've paid for a Linux or a Windows version? Even if you download binaries directly from their page and they count the downloads - it's not a very precise method because people could download binaries multiple times, for instance after a re-install or a distro-hop.
Edit:

Edit:
so we could calculate what purchases result in Linux downloads.Could... Do they though? If a developer asked for it?

Awesome! One of the things to take away from this is that Unity has come a long way.
That GIF alone is almost enough reason to buy the game :)
Still gonna wait for release and possibly a review though.

The agony! I can't keep up with Feral's release schedule due to, you know, them doing such a good job and me having a job.

I still haven't played the Witcher 2, so for me the upshot is that I will not begin to look forward to part 3 as much when I do get around to it.

Quoting: TemplateRBefore Square Enix is thinking about a SteamOS-/Linux-Version of "DeusEx Mankind Dvided" , they should port the predecessor "Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut" first.Seconded, I actually have that game as a gift, but never got it to work properly through Wine. (Must confess I gave up on that rather quickly and went on to play native games)

But I am excited! Any chance for a GOL guild?

I've only played the free web version of Kingdom Rush over on Kongregate. I've played a bunch of TD games there, this one probably ranks second for me, after Cursed Treasure. One or two wonky bits, but overall it's pretty solid.
