Quoting: lvlarkHmm, might have to get this one. My attempts at a Japan playthrough have always stopped soon due to it feeling... lackluster? But not until summer - must not get distracted from work for the coming 2-3 months.
Student doing finals ? :)
No, teaching for finals.

Canonical drop the Unity desktop environment for Ubuntu favour of going back to GNOME

I wonder what you're referring to, here. For good reasons, lines are not printed too wide for at least centuries now - and so does GoL:

I'm referring to the horrendous amount of non-useful things spamming the sides of my screen.
Having lines not span the width of a screen is, indeed, a good thing. But often websites will cut them too short to do an inline picture, that could've gone to the side, but there's advertisement/clickbait/whatever there.

Question: Is there any interest in me doing a separate site to cover general Linux news?
I wouldn't be interested, but I think this news is so important that it's rightfully on GoL.

About the news:
I'm sad that this puts the end to a possible alternative for mobile phones.
Agreed - I'm interested in the occasional general Linux news post, but no need to put it on a different side.

And about the phone: I hate smartphones, but am somewhat forced to use one. I was hoping an Ubuntu Phone might become a decent option, so far that I might actually buy one instead of using my dad's hand-me-down.

About Unity and convergence going the way of the Dodo: I never liked Unity. PC's have to look and act like PC's, phones/tablets have to look and act like mobile devices.

My $0.03 on the vertical/horizontal taskbar:

$0.01: Having little use of horizontal screen space is a mistake of applications/websites (thankfully not GOL). Although having applications open side by side can be very useful (or panels within games).

$0.02: Cinnamon's taskbar is very slim, due to not using huge icons, but small icons with a wee bit of text next to it instead. And I like having that bit of text.

$0.03: Adding text to a vertical taskbar (for instance the word 'Menu' or just a digital clock) makes it wider than I'm comfortable with. Unless you auto-collapse it, but I don't like that either. My main grope with a wide vertical taskbar? It distorts the symmetry of my applications/websites. The horizontal middle of my screen is no longer the horizontal middle of 'my' application/website.

AMD have announced Ryzen 5 will launch in April

I'll probably pick one up in June. May not have enough money before, nor time to actually put it to use.

That does give me time to wait out benchmarks and decide whether the extra cores (or even extra wattage of the 1600x) will be worth it.

I like the graveyard they previewed, in no small part because it's in an outdoor setting as opposed to the other dungeons found. I also like that the rewards in expeditions are smaller than in the 'normal' outdoor world, AND that the rewards still require you to go out there and gather resources. People need to be out there, you know..

Some thoughts on switching from Ubuntu to Antergos for Linux gaming

a proper menu.
So much this. Although my 'proper menu' of choice is Cinnamon's. The approach of both Unity and GNOME are abhorring to me.
Funny story, actually. I installed a bunch of DE's on my laptop so my mom could try a few before I'd try and install Linux on her machine. She picked Cinnamon, so then I gave it a go. Not looked back since. I wouldn't call it 'fancy', 'flashy' or 'modern', I would call it decent, proper and timeless.

But about the distro: I had originally planned to install Arch (or Antergos/Manjaro) when I upgrade my PC (planned for this summer), but this all sounds like I'm gonna give it a go way sooner.

My thoughts on the MMO Albion Online on Linux, many months later

I played this a while back - plenty of changes I haven't seen - but I really did like it. I don't even really like PVP, but this game has a decent way of easing you into it, imo. And I liked the dungeons a whole lot. Later on, they have those rare materials as rewards (although you can, afaik, get them outside as well). Most boss mechanics that I encountered aren't too challenging, yet entertaining enough. I imagine things will heat up down the line?

Quoting: KelsNot sure that really addresses my concern. Let me re-word it. Say I sign up as a new player and I want to go into crafting. I've got to start with the low level stuff, of course. But so does every other newbie, and experienced players who are starting to craft as well. There's going to be a glut of low-level crafted gear on the market, since that's what everyone makes to begin with. So from a seller's perspective, given there's not really anything at the low levels I can make that dozens of others aren't making at the same time, is there a system in place where I'm not just crafting and essentially throwing it away until I get to a sufficiently high skill level?
Each city having its own market does work to some extent. You can't quickly haul things around from high lvl areas to low lvl areas, so for a high lvl crafter there's probably not enough incentive to go and sell things in starter markets.

And Liam - count me in for the GOL guild!

The Linux GOTY award is now open for submissions

After browsing the submissions up until now, I feel almost as inadequate to vote as last year - I simply haven't come round to playing most of these. I'll probably vote for a few categories though.
