VK9, the open source project to implement d3d9 over Vulkan continues to improve

Will probably be good for porting older games to Linux or running them in Wine.

Quoting: 0aTTShould the game be purchased via the feral store to support Feral Interactive directly? Are Linux purchases on Steam really counted? I usually play in Big Picture. I've heard that Valve does not count that.
Big Picture mode isn't counted for the purposes of the hardware survey, but if you buy a game from within Steam for Linux/SteamOS then it always counts as a Linux sale, unless a Linux version isn't actually available at the time of purchase.

As for buying from Feral or Steam, I think a larger chunk of the profits go to Feral if you buy directly from them, but I'm not certain of that.

Quoting: Eike
Quoting: edddeduckferalThe games are released on Ubuntu, results on Ubuntu are accurate and are very similar to SteamOS but much easier to use and test. Using an unsupported distro and WM can sometimes cause issues you don't see on supported systems.
I'm expecting that, if no bugs occur, performance on different WMs shouldn't differ much. Do you have experience on this?
If whatever window manager you're using can automatically suspend compositing when a fullscreen program is active then you'll probably be fine. I know KDE doesn't enable this by default which kills performance. If you enable that setting then games seem to work about as well as they do in a lighter weight window manager like Xfce or MATE.

Valve are looking towards Flatpak functionality for Steam
23 Nov 2016 at 1:39 pm UTC

A few things come to mind:

1) Isn't this essentially what Steam already does with its built-in runtime library?
2) Isn't it up to the developer and not Valve how they wish to distribute their software? If a developer wants to use Flatpak instead of the Steam runtime library then why can't they? For that matter, developers have always been able to bundle individual libraries if they wished, so what advantage does Flatpak really offer?
3) I find it ironic that Flatpak is supposed to make it easier to install software on multiple Linux distros... but they only officially support Fedora and Ubuntu.

I already know why, same reason as with the others. But seriously this is really frustrating. I'm sad that this will be another port I will not support.
What are the technical reason for no cross-platform multiplayer? It doesn't bother me in the slightest since I very rarely play multiplayer, but I'm curious.
Probably because of this http://steamcommunity.com/groups/maclinux/discussions/0/528398719787800607/ [External Link]
This seems to be the "gotcha":

"Any differences in the maths, even at the nth decimal place of precision, will accumulate to a tangible divergence in behaviour and ultimately a disconnect. When dealing with multiple architectures, operating systems and optimising compilers, tracking down all possible differences is a long and complex task."

And here I always assumed math was math. I guess it must be differences of precision and how random values are generated.

What I like about the battle system is that you don’t actually have to command the battles yourself. You can have them auto-resolve and the AI will just do it and present the outcome to you.
I've been burned by "auto-resolve" in so many games over the years that I refer to it as "auto-lose". In other games, I've had what should be have been a lopsided victory in my favor return a resounding defeat after clicking "auto-resolve". No thank you! It'd be great if it actually worked as expected in this game, but I have my doubts.

Performance looks great, so thumbs up to Feral, although I may wait for a deep discount just so I can get the "complete" game.

Looks like I'm somewhere between the minimum and recommended specs. It worked out well for Mad Max, so I wonder if I'll be able to eke some good performance out of this one?

Ultimate General: Civil War, the tactical war-game will come to Linux

Quoting: Nor Mantis
Quoting: Mountain ManSo is this a grand strategy game that covers the entire Civil War? Because that would be awesome.
I would not say its a "grand" strategy game. It is just battles or scenarios. It is a lot lighter than Paradox games or even Civ in my opinion. No empire building, or moving armies on a large map, just battles. In Gettysburg the armies are predetermined and you must win or loose then move to the next scenario. But this game does add some depth compared to Gettysburg.
I have Gettysburg, and it's one of the best real-time strategy games I've ever played.

But I see what you mean, this new game doesn't have the nation building and politics of a grand strategy game. It still looks great, though. I like the prospect of more simplified unit control. Just depends on how good the AI really is.

Quoting: TeodosioI tried 'Ultimate General: Gettysburg' back at the time but the micromanagement killed me. The first few missions are manageable enough but once you have 20+ units at your command the game becomes a clickfeast. I hope they will correct that in this game.
This is from the gane description:

Innovative command system: You decide which level of control you want. Command every unit individually or just give them a main goal with one button click and watch if they can take that hill. Army divisions commanders can make decisions on their own and help you control the largest army. Draw a defensive line and allocated brigades will defend it like lions. Or design a deep flanking maneuver by just drawing an arrow and send the whole army to the enemy flank or the rear. Your generals will try to fulfill your orders, although "no plan survives contact with the enemy".
