Valve put out a 'Data Deep Dive' to show how games are doing on Steam

Quoting: kuhpunktThere is just too much content out there. Thousands and thousands of bands on bandcamp and spotify, thousands and thousands of hours of movies and TV and Netflix and Amazon, thousands and thousands of games across all platforms.

It's hard to be successful, no matter what.
I really boils down to creative professions being much more desirable and satisfying than pretty much anything we can do for a living. Let's face it, people rather paint, sing and write than drive garbage trucks or sit in meetings led by pointy-haired bosses. This is in the end why it's so hard to make a living from creative work - there are just too many people out there doing the same.
The irony, of course, is that it's the garbage truck drivers, janitors, and lunch ladies who retire early as millionaires while the "starving artists" continue to starve. Those "undesirable" blue collar jobs tend to pay very well, and there's not a lot of competition for them because most people look down on such occupations.

Paradox to give players a lot more guidance in Crusader Kings 3 - new overview video

Well, it would be hard to give players less direction than they did in Crusader Kings II. The tutorial was like teaching someone to swim by throwing them into the deep end of the pool and saying, "Okay, now whatever you do, don't drown!"

Seems Valve do intend to go back to SteamOS at some point

I just hope they make a proper Half-Life sequel at some point.

I have over two-dozen games in my GoG library, and I think I only paid for like 5 of them. These constant giveaways are insane.

Linux hardware vendor System76 will have their own Keyboard out this year

Quoting: NanobangI think the Steam Controller is like Linux itself: clearly superior, but, because it requires the user tinker and think now and then, puts it out of realm of interest for the mass of humanity living comfortably in the middle of the Bell curve.
That's a good way to put it, and I can't see any reason to disagree. It's an almost insurmountable challenge to get consumers to think outside the box. Apple is very good at it; Valve, not so much (for example, the iPod wasn't the first portable digital audio player, nor was it the best -- a good argument could be made that it was actually among the worst in terms of storage capacity and sound quality -- but Apple's brilliant marketing turned it into a household name almost overnight; same with the iPhone).

Quoting: NanobangIf System 76 want to make something, start making Steam style controllers so I can shake this sense of hopelessness and loss I've had since Valve announced they were discontinuing theirs.
I hadn't heard that. That's too bad. I think the Steam Controller is the best gamepad ever made.

Ambitious Half-Life remake Black Mesa is now officially available and it's a beauty

Quoting: t3gHow’s the performance on the native version? Some people had better performance in the past with the Windows version running Proton + D9VK.
I've had some issues. The big outdoor firefight leading up to the missile launch was a stuttery mess but still playable. The game is smooth for the most part but certainly not as optimized as it should be. I've not tried it in Proton.

Quoting: Mountain ManI'm not comparing VR to 3D television. I'm saying that my reaction when I had the opportunity to try VR was the same.
Which doesn't change the fact that VR does things that 3DTV doesn't. You can't play Beat Saber with Mouse and Keyboard or a Controller.
Which is entirely irrelevant to what I said.

Quoting: kuhpunktDude, what are you even talking about? XD
Since you're typing in English, I assume you understand English, so you're going to have to be a bit more specific as to what you're confused about.
Everything.

VR isn't that expensive anymore. SteamVR is a standard. And then you start talking about communism.
For some of us it is expensive. I certainly couldn't afford it.
I can afford it. I have the means to go out today and buy a state of the art VR system and the computer needed to run it, but I simply don't see any compelling reason to invest in the technology. Like I said, the technology is neat, but it didn't add anything that I would consider essential to the gameplay experience. And from what I've seen, Alyx looks to be a standard VR game but with Valve polish. I think people expecting it to revolutionize the VR market are going to be disappointed.

Quoting: kuhpunktWhy do you keep saying that it's a gimmick?
Because in my opinion, it is. I've tried VR, and my impression was the same I had with 3D television: neat but not essential and certainly not worth the additional expense and hassle to set it up.
3DTV doesn't allow anything that 2DTV doesn't offer. VR does. And you set it up once. There's hardly any hassle.
