The Steam Deck hit me over the head with feelings of nostalgia

Quoting: BalkanSpyDon't get me wrong, I really like the idea of an portable handheld PC and that the Steam Deck is a big success, but it seems kinda funny that many people prefer to play their games on a medium sized handheld device rather than their main gaming PCs.

I guess it's the novelty factor. :P
No, I don't think that's true at all. I have more fun and feel more connected with the deck then with any new gaming device I ever owned, except maybe my genesis. And for a lot of us, sitting in front of a PC for 8hrs a day has seriously decreased our will to additionally game on it.

Quoting: constAs Liam said, you basically have 5 decades of gaming available to you. Anytime, anywhere.
5 Decades of gaming? How about dos games? Or games with heavy use of keyboard?
I supose you have a virtual keyboard, but I don't think it's ideal.
It seems that the keys get mapped. Controller->keyboard, and then you can configure per game, but it seems limiting for some games.
There are games from all decades that translate well and those that don't. Decks controls are very versatile and you can reach a lot with action layers, yet it's your time and your decision what you want to do with it.
I really think there will be a lot of community effort into making more games enjoyable with super ambitious controller profiles and guides, but that will take some time. When you hold this thing in your hands and have all these games available, you don't really want to stop gaming to tinker. You want to enjoy games that run well.
There are so many deck related projects I want to tackle, but not now. :D

The scope has already broadened a lot with the trackpad keyboard. There are things that could still improve it - like function keys, a transparent or even blind typing mode (I really think that's feasible with a little overlay that shows the currently hovered keys), yet this is already the best touch keyboard I have ever used.

Quoting: dubigrasuI don't really need such device and I've been stubbornly refuse to give in to FOMO and get one, but lately I feel that I may lose and just do it.
I expected and hoped to see the Deck well received, but the public response was out of this world, is like is magic. Is maybe the most buggy device released in the recent years, and yet, people are out of their minds about it.
I must get one and find out what's going on.
Bugs are mostly in SteamUI and that's mostly in the background. 99.9% of the time you use your deck, it's pure epic gaming. No second window distracting you, no hassles. Select a game, maybe adjust fps, play. Stop gaming for any reason and it goes out of your way. You don't fiddle with saving or closing the game. You just hit one button and that's damn reliable.
There's one kind of people who shouldn't get a deck yet and that's those that can't get over something not working right now. If that occurrs, you should just switch to another game and forget it. The deck actually makes that super easy.
As Liam said, you basically have 5 decades of gaming available to you. Anytime, anywhere.

Return to Monkey Island announced for 2022

It's common for artists to restrict themselves in certain areas to create a context for their message. Pixel art is one way to do that. Hand drawn pixel art is an art form some people are very good at and seeing what they can do with attracts a lot of people. It's not cheaper nor inferior if executed properly.

Yet I'm also glad they don't go for pixel art here, cause monkey island was always about looking as comic/pop art as possible with current technology so they better follow comic culture.

They should develop it directly in ScummVM!

dbrand now have Steam Deck Skins and Wraps

Quoting: scaineI'd have to have a style before I could match my (as yet imaginary) Deck to it. Is "geeky, tight, hairy Scotsman" a style?

I absolutely Love the mahogany effect though. Beautiful.
Having a concrete Steam Deck is also kind of tempting :D
Still, I would probably go with all matte white and keeping the trackpads unchanged.

I really wonder how it would look if I applied the skins. My sticker application skills are among the worst I have to offer.

Coromon is pretty much Pokemon for the Steam Deck
5 Apr 2022 at 9:29 am UTC

I guess pretty much every core Nintendo Pokemon game is a Pokemon like playable on Steam Deck, anyway :)
The state of emulation on this thing is outstanding and will only get more awesome over time. I thought the pandora was a great emulation device (for its time) but damn, the Deck is one of it's kind.

Lutris version 0.5.10 brings improved Steam Deck support but no Flatpak yet

Yeah, cool but, as always, that's third parties that comes to compensate what the main project lack. That model is getting a bit tiresome because more often than not these third parties doesn't integrate well with the main project and add their own set of shortcoming and problems to the stack.
With that mindset, you can't really use any Linux distribution because they are all made of code from different projects that are integrated with each other to add functionality.
All that flatseal does can be done with flatpaks cli. Flatseal is just one tool to do it graphically and I rather have such a tool from a third party, and not tied to a DE, then only a libadwaita based tool by the gnome project. Having both wouldn't hurt, though.

Of all the *portable app* solutions out there, flatpak is the one that most respects the package repository approach of linux. Rather then shifting all problems in the deployment, the flatpak base is an extension point - standardized, managable and configurable. The cost of that is mostly put on the maintainer of the flatpak - again, similar to package management in distributions.
The one thing maintainers can't really solve is filesystem access, as the way people store their data can not really be standardized. The alternative route of symlinking data in the preconfigured filesystem context is managable, but not intuitive at all.
With the increasing usage and reliance on flatpak, I hope most DEs will soon add context menus that can configure the accessible paths to their application menus or window decorators.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualFlatpak tackles some long-standing distribution issues with GNU/Linux. It's not perfect, but something like it needs to exist in the future in order to deal with these problems that simply don't exist on macOS or Windows.
So do the "others". And each one of them have their own set of good and wrong. The one I had the least problem with is AppImage, and I don't particularly like it, it has plenty of design problems but each one I tried worked flawlessly. The one I want to try the most is Flatpack but each time I tried it was a huge pain in the ass to set up, didn't understand how I should do it, and it keeps throwing errors at me. Their doc makes it look easy, but when you get errors, you are on your own and good luck to find what they mean. And it seriously lacks a GUI to make installation fast and easy.
