A Semi-VR Mode for steamdeck still seems kind of fun. Not sure I could play that for long, but I'd be so tempted :D

Quoting: Liam DaweThe fact that Sony can't deliver enough PS5s for the demand probably made a lot of things possible. There currently is no reason for them to lure users into their garden, they rather need to calm the people waiting in front of the gates. Doesn't hurt to make some bucks with snacks for those waiting. I wouldn't be too sure this continues once production exceeds demand again...Quoting: CSharpIt's rather sad that we're surprised about this. That we assume companies want to wall their own gardens. I applaud them for embracing cool.things and playing well with others.Sad? Sony and Microsoft both previously worked very hard to put up walls around their fancy gardens. In many ways Sony still does, you only have to look at all the cross-platform issues with Sony locking accounts to their system, there's many more examples around.
The article is just highlighting how *good* it is that all this is happening.

Quoting: rustybroomhandleWish Lutris team would do some work to make that a bit more Steam Deck friendly.I would be happy enough if lutris had an API, so others could take care of a deck/couch GUI.
On Twitter there was some back 'n forth between Heroic and Bottles about potentially allowing Heroic to use Bottles to manage wine. A stellar idea!

Quoting: CyborgZetaImmutable file system with the option of installing applications via Flatpak is, I think, the right move for this kind of device. Those two factors will protect the less-technical users from themselves. There's a lot of apps not ready for flatpak yet. A "homebrew-manager" would be optimal to keep users from switching to dev-mode en masse, but that's certainly possible.

All eyes on lutris now :D
The Kodi integration is nice, but I think a dedicated launcher would be even much better.

Imagine a stable read-only ostree overlayed with 1-x rw-layers. You can use the repos like normal and whenever there is a problem, you just deactivate the overlays and fix them in a chroot-like-environment or scrap them. Support for such a task could probably be included in grub, so if your system has issues on startup, you can just tell it to launch with less overlays. Or you could boot with alternating overlays to test things. Amazing times ahead. :)

Quoting: fenglengshunI really love this. I'm currently looking at Endless OS and Fedora Kinoite to see if it could work for my usecase. There's a lot one could do with ostree and overlay(fs) and I really think this might become the future.
I would love to also have a Toolbox container though. If the UX on PC is decent, I might just use it, then use Toolbox to have CrossOver inside one Toolbox, then install most of what I need via Flatpak (and maybe some other AUR-under-Toolbox container if they're not there).

I really wished they did a review to check which options belong where.
On KDE, i regularly find options that belong in the preferences in some context menus or the application menu. Or vice versa. Or options that belong in the application can only be changed in the global kde settings.
In the end, the application menus and context menus are cluttered and it's hard to find the things you want to do. If KDE would improve here, i think the usability would already be very very high without the need to remove any features.

Quoting: rustybroomhandleI'm sure there will be better ways to get those tools on SteamDeck then the AUR. The AUR is awesome for what it is, but installing launchers should not put you near that edge.Quoting: mylka"Yes. You'll be able to install external apps"In developer mode yes. Else you have to rely on flatpak. Minigalaxy is on flathub but heroic, lutris not.
does AUR work?
that would be great for heroic, rare and minigalaxy

Any form of port, be it with or without translation layers, can run worse, nearly the same or better then on Windows. It depends on the codebase, the effort and the knowledge that went into it. Chances are, someone like Icculus or Ethan Lee with tons of experience or a dedicated developer with unlimited time could make a better port without translation layers but that's not guaranteed. While they can't solve every problem with perfect performance, a lot of knowledge and experience are already embedded in those translation layers and that can way even stronger. Also, ports based on those layers have a better chance to exist in the same codebase and buildsystems, which absolutely helps us in regards of continuous support.
When it comes to dxvk and winelib, there is also a lot of potential to document possible performance killers and make developers aware of those. Maybe with inline annotations and alternative, more explicit calls in the API or even something like a ruleset for automated code analysis. I could imagine that to be a very effective way to help ports getting even better.
We are at a point where it's quite hard to calculate if a specific port strategy will have enough impact to add value compared to just running the game through proton.
We can only hope that SteamDeck will make our platform interesting enough for studios to target linux from the beginning or by chance select engines and tools that have very good support. :)

Will it be a written course? Else I'm out. I hate learning to program anything with video lessons. It just doesn't make sense.
