Haha, our gamemaster once used dynamic lighting on roll20. We all hated it. Mostly because it was somewhat buggy and decreased usability, but also because we hurt ourselves in a bigger brawl.

Xfce still uses Xfwm by default and it was developed from scratch.
I'd argue you can count Xfce users who use anything but Xfwm or Compton with your fingers ;)

I was very interested in KDE when KDE4 was still new (even tried out the fancy betas). I liked the direction but found it unstable like hell. Also my favorite programs are all gtk and they looked horribly misplaced in kde back then.
Also, I found that most KDE applications had 100s of options you would set once and leave that way in some toolbar-sub-sub-sub menu and most things I would change on a regular basis were put in the preferences. Couldn't get used to this at all.
But maybe I should give it another try. feels like 10 years or so ^^

I'm using gnome for one reason alone: The overview when pressing the windows-button has become second nature to me. It's just amazing.

Appimages are not new comer friendly: they have to be chmodded to make 'em run. This alone is too much for a new user. Appimages are also not mandatorily sandboxed, so a security risk more or less.

Flatpaks and snaps are a thing, really. Both improving all the time too.
Last time I clicked on an AppImage link in manjaro, a little installer application came up, asked me if I wanted to install it or install and run it. The experience was pretty flawless. So I guess it depends on how the distro handles it, once again. Pretty much the same as with flatpak. Those only are really usable if the distro handles them well.

What I really like about flatpak and snaps is how a lot of package managers handle updates already. Haven't seen anything compareable for appimages yet. :)

I'd consider both a major improvement over distribution-specific deployment methods for applications that I want to be regularly updated and I'm fine with different techologies available, as all have strengths and weaknesses.
So what exactly makes Flatpak so horrible?

Unity is really a dealbreaker for me. There are so many real open source projects one might help...
Anyway, this is strategically clever. Such projects are sertainly a way to improve documentation and the engine itself, especially if the team building the engine is involved.

Proper Godot integration could prove quite nice.
I'd kind of like the idea of a standardized platformer level format that multiple smaller games could support. I guess graphics are only references?
