KDE developer thinks they will become the 'Windows or Android' of the FOSS world

Quoting: TermyToo be quite frank, since plasma matured there is little to no reason for choosing almost any other DE.
There is plenty of people who don't like the amount of options plasma throws at them and prefer minimalist desktops with very few choices (gnome). Also I don't know if Plasma is setup for touch screen stuff out of box as gnome, so if your into touch screens then gnome probably still a good choice.

KDE Plasma is making some pretty fast improvements so it seems like they will get there sooner then some others.

I still haven't moved to Wayland as its yet to tick off all my minimal requirements list.

Interested to see what System76 comes up with because I'm not a fan of GNOME, at least in flexibility to customize the desktop (without broken plugins and scripts)...

Quoting: rustybroomhandleMaybe, but the one app that lots of people will maybe want to install is Lutris, and I don't think that developer can be talked into releasing a self contained version of that.
Good thing about open source is the developer doesn't need to do it themselves; if the community wants a appimage then I'm sure someone can create one for them.

Quoting: chimpyor is it some thing I can install side by side and call on a per game basis within Steam?
This,

And if you want to activate special things like Mangohud there is special position for it in the command line. I think its goes something like gamescope [options] -- - VARIABLE1 VARIABLE2 %command% ... If you place VARIABLE1 etc before gamescope it DOUBLES the thing which is bad.

More info is on the gamescope github.

Gamescope atm has a issue where mouse acceleration is forced off which can result in peoples cursors/mouse slowing down (fix coming).

I would like to know if Steam Deck intends to use Wayland?, if so then how do they allow for LCD adjustments? via hardware or a custom compositor? (Plasma kwin does not support display adjustments under wayland atm)

Also why didn't they choose a display with VRR support I wonder?

Valve adds documentation for Steam Deck development, suggests Manjaro Linux for now

Provided you don't fiddle with custom arch drivers or -git builds and stick to Manjaro driver and kernel system, then for the most part its a decent noob friendly choice.

There are some Manjaro supported Kernel/Driver(I think) builds on the AUR but its sort of a user-beware situation.

Plasma5 is pretty good, I've been using it the most. However I've settled with Latte Dock for my panels etc since it has more customization (sometimes confusing to get perfectly right).

Forza Horizon 5 on Linux? Yeah okay fine, Proton Experimental was updated

It would be nice if one day Steam allowed you to addon other store API's like how Lutris works. They could then make it so dependencies install correctly and also fix all the issues with add non-steam game.

Allot of people add their non-steam games to steam in order to run via proton but often it won't work because steam doesn't install any requirements to even get the game running.

Also proton/dxvk is still not 100% launcher friendly. For example there are issues with Tarkov BSG launcher and PlanetSide2, the former appears to need some dotnet foolery which should be solved by Mono but isn't...

ONE DAY!

It's pretty embarrassing for System76 and they should reach out to Linus and work with him to get him to give it another try. Thought I think Linus has committed to Manjaro, lol. Now Manjaro devs are probably pretty nervous!

Steam for Linux still has some basic syntax and command line issues when launching stuff. Gamescope for example is very picky about where exactly arguments and commands are placed.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyLinus Tech Tips video about problems running Linux got 1.1 million views;
Yes however Linus was having issues, James seemed to have had a relatively decent experience.

Also Linus fails to read a few obvious things on the screen, in POP!Os it clearly says its going to remove EVERYTHING if he goes ahead and installs steam, obviously a bug, but you should always take a photo of said stuff so you can reinstall it afterwards and save the install.

BUT that is probably asking too much from a casual user who is obviously of whats happening on screen.

Also when Linus installs Manjaro he complains about no audio but fails to understand how audio device switching works on Plasma and he clearly shows a screen where he DOESN'T have this exotic windows only support soundboard selected. (if he selected it he'd at least get sound)

But I think Linus is a good example of your typical user who would install Linux and proceed to not read or understand a single damn thing like their looking at Chinese writings or something! (even tho its all in English, go figure)

I've met people from ages 24 and up who fail to read and comprehend EXTREMELY basic instructions and details on screen. Its like their brain fails to work when looking at the monitor, its puzzling!

Quoting: OG SWAT RV@LinuxCome on, give me Arma 3...
I tested ARMA3 with the new BE Runtime and it works. Tarkov ALMOST works, gets past the BE check but somehow fails when entering the final connecting to game server, it times out for unknown reason.
