Skullgirls got review-bombed on Steam after some art changes
7 Jul 2023 at 11:03 pm UTC

The changes seem pretty minor to me. Still not a children's game, so it's not like the style or mood or rating changed.

In principle, it is a weird thing to do to a game many people purchased a long time ago. Doesn't feel right.

The latest Volcanoids update looks electrifying

I agree with Korhaka. When you play Volcanoids with friends, it's fun for a good while in the beginning. That will wane, and then it's fun again for a while when more features are added. You could say it's appropriate for an Early Access state.

Dwarf Fortress getting close to a Linux release on Steam

I'm planning to get it once it's released. I have too many unplayed games to jump on Early Access at this time.

Steam Summer Sale 2023 is live with the Steam Deck up to 20% off

I have begun to be tempted by the Steam Deck even though I have no justification. When I'm not sitting at my full tower, I can use my laptop. I also have a Nintendo Switch which doesn't get much use. I had a 3DS that only saw action a couple times per year.

It would be a neat LAN party device, but it's a far drive to my friends' houses these days. My LAN parties are with my kids now with full desktops.

Valve appear to be banning games with AI art on Steam (updated)
1 Jul 2023 at 2:44 pm UTC Likes: 2

Valve's handling makes complete sense from a large business who wants to remain in good legal standing and not have to potentially remove established games in the future. Better to prevent.

Some have mentioned worries about the mechanisms to detect AI generated art. Not something I'm worried about myself. I know it will not be perfect, just like other tools in the software industry. Will they use "bots" and algorithms to detect AI art? I'd be surprised if they didn't. Why wouldn't they? Software automation is the only way we can handle the scale of content we all use out of necessity or entertainment. It will never be perfect, just like when you buy a box of nails from the hardware store. There is often a bent or misshapen one. That's alright. You deal with a bump in the road and keep driving.

I'm not against AI generated art when legalities are met. AI is a tool just like other software that requires knowledge, skill, and time to use. If the art is ugly, it won't sell, which means a great amount of engineering (AI) and creativity of using the tool are required to get a desirable result. Like other tools of many kinds, you could produce good things or bad things.

Valve moving away from the Battle Pass in Dota 2
24 Jun 2023 at 2:35 pm UTC

I usually bought the Battle Pass around TI time, but Dota Plus wasn't worth it to me as a spectator. Hmm... now I'm curious what the long-term business model is to keep the game sustainable. I don't play it myself really, but I like to watch the tournaments.

Quoting: WyattTurpinBtw, do your kids use Linux? Just curious if you are starting them off right?
Yup! I'm not sure they've ever touched a Windows computer before.
Schools have been moving to ChromeOS recently. I just graduated and am working over the summer in my school's IT department and we have to repair old chromebooks and Enlist over 300+ new ones. Fun.
Also running cord under the school like a Vietnam Tunnel Rat.
You're getting great experience for an IT career. I did those same things long ago.

GOG Summer Sale 2023 is live with giveaways and game deals

I was not trying to say boycott GOG. I buy games there still. They have to meet my personal requirements.

There are types of games I won't buy on Steam as well.

Comparing the two, Steam enables my Linux gaming more than GOG does overall. That is all.

You'll be building your own dungeons in Quest Master

I wonder how you'll be able to share your creations with Steam friends but only play locally.

This looks like a good one to give the kids a chance at level building. Myself, I only enjoy it if the final creation will be used. I enjoy the outcome, but not the process on its own enough.

Too many Windows games. GOG doesn't help make playing Windows games on Linux easy in any way.
