Valve improves Steam Deck offline mode with more to come

Nice!

Now, we just need to get game devs to do the same.

Although with games I legally purchased that don't let me access DLC or play without a internet on the deck, I've just been giving them an "unofficial update" to give me access to what I paid for

(Yes, Ubisoft, I'm looking at you!)

Quoting: GdawgPornable? Are you insinuating that Liam enjoys “entertainment” other than gaming on his Steam Deck? 😆
Portable* xD

Quoting: Liam DawePerfect. Exactly what I expected. Naturally you need to pick the right games if you’re going to be away from any power so it’s just knowing that and planning a bit ahead. Made the evenings a lot nicer 😅
Nice! How long did the battery last playing games on a full charge? I'd expect this to have been important considering there probably wasn't much opportunity of charging while camping?

Liam, how was the steam deck on your travels? Did the battery last long enough for a proper gaming session and such?

It's a pornable gaming device, so it'd be great to hear how it works for real-world usage instead of just in peoples homes, on charge all the time!

(After all, what's the point of a portable gaming device, if it's not travelling?)

I'm surprised SSH isn't mentioned here considering how useful it is to Linux users on any distro :dizzy:

For example once you've got ssh setup to use your ssh keys, you can quickly and easily mount your decks filesystem on your desktop or laptop.

Obvious thing first, add an entry on your desktop/laptop in ~/.ssh/config:

Host steamdeck
    HostName 192.168.1.11
    Port 22
    User deck
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_rsk_a_personal
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519_rsk_b_personal

Naturally replace the IP address and your identity files with the ones matching your deck.

Make a mini-bash script and save it as deckmount.sh:

#!/bin/bash
sshfs steamdeck:/home/deck /home/user/Deck -o reconnect -o cache=yes -o kernel_cache -o compression=no

Naturally replace "/home/user/Deck" with your preferred local (desktop/laptop) mount point.

Make it executable:

$ chmod +x deckmount.sh

Done! Simply run the script whenever you want to mount the filesystem:

$ ./deckmount.sh

(You don't need sudo for this, it should mount as your regular user if your mount point is within your /home)

Once ran, you can browse files within /home/deck on your deck right from your filemanager (Dolphin etc) - In the case of dolphin it'll show as a separate device under devices on the left panel. Or you can just directly navigate to the path specified above - usage from this point is exactly the same as if you had plugged in a USB cable, copy/paste etc.

This was a day one, hour one thing for me when I got my deck, since I wanted to transfer files (Namely game files, so I didn't have to download them all over again). :dizzy:

Just my 2c - simple but effective.

PS: Please, for the love of god use SSH keys - not a SSH password they're really easy to setup and give a much higher level of security.

Hmm? Shouldn't this be yen? I've never seen it put like that before.

Shouldn't it be JPY, JP¥、 59、800円、¥59、800。 etc ?

SteamOS 3.3 and Steam Deck Client updates released for all users

Quoting: MasterSleort
Quoting: ZlopezI would like to see an option to turn off screen when just downloading games and not playing to have better battery life.
This and a way to tell if a WiFi network is metered. I like automatic updates, but it is so annoying if you are on a metered network and it starts downloading a multiple GB update to a game you wanted to play. Here you may not have enough data to download the update, and because it started the update, I cannot play that game now.
I usually have unlimited data, but when traveling, there may be limits on on the data of my cellular network, see EU.
For what it's worth if you want to download games but don't want your deck screen on, you can always download the game on your linux desktop and simply copy over the steam game folder to your card directly.

The deck will verify the files when you hit install and then you should be good to go!

Or you can set the card as a library on your computer as well, hit install and place it into that library and move the card back over to the deck when finished.

I had to do this with one of my games because it was much faster than waiting for my internet to download the game again (The game was over 100GB).

Although, an option to set networks to metered would be great!

SteamOS 3.3 and Steam Deck Client updates released for all users

Yeah, replacement is probably best bet. I mean, if it was the decks OS build causing the problem then using another device would allow the card to work since it has a different OS and card reader, particularly if the card worked after a downgrade of the OS previously. Had the update tripped the read-only switch then even a downgrade wouldn't have fixed it at all.

So I'm inclined to think it was just a card that failed.

It sucks, but at least you got a replacement coming

Quoting: SupayOh, that was the first thing I tried. The card has its internal read only trip activated and it will not switch off by forcing via hdparm even as root. It doesn't mount whatsoever, read or read/write, and refuses any attempt to dd zero it out. Tried different sd card readers and distros on different devices, and inserting it into cameras etc to see if their format can do anything. Even tried my wife's Windows laptop. Looks pretty dead to me.
How strange. If no devices can flip that switch then I'm not sure what to suggest. Does the card still have its warranty? If so I'd say an RMA is in order.

With that said, just updated my deck to the latest stable build and both of my cards are still working fine after update (2x Samsung 512GB Pro Plus - not from Amazon, I don't use Amazon.)

So perhaps the card you have was just dying anyway? I mean you said it worked on stable, stopped working with beta and then worked on stable again and now doesn't work at all in any computer/device? That sounds like a card that was in the process of dying.

Quoting: SupayThe Beta update broke my SD card showing up as inserted. Tried rebooting and re-inserting but would not even show as an available device. Switching to Stable resolved it.
Checked again by switching back to Beta and my SD card is not recognised. Stable works fine though.
And now Stable shows another update and my SD card no longer shows in Stable and is no longer mountable on my desktop. Has worked fine right up to this update installation. I suggest removing it before updating.

Update: My SD card appears to have had its read only setting tripped and is now unmountable and unreadable, and cannot be returned to a usable state. It is an Integral 1TB micro SD and has been formatted and filled to capacity to test, and working fine, so I am certain it is a genuine device rather than a fake. And it only stopped working when I did my Deck update with it inserted, so be very careful and remove your SDs before running any update.
Have you tried the card in a regular tux computer?

It may be easier to debug/test/check the card from a full tux setup and sometimes despite the deck being linux, another card reader may work better etc. So worth a try. :-).

Linux user share on Steam continues rising — highest for years again
2 Aug 2022 at 2:23 pm UTC

Quoting: CatKiller
Quoting: BlackBloodRumIn any case, it would need to be clarified as it may artificially make it appear that either you have more Linux users on steam than in actuality or that some distros are losing ground, when in fact they're just not being counted because the user has two distros being used on steam and only one of those is counted.
It's a hardware survey, not a user survey. It's no more artificial than someone with a Windows desktop and a Steam Deck having both machines counted, or a desktop and a laptop.

The hardware survey lets developers compare the requirements of their game to the amount of hardware being used that meets those requirements. Developers making sure that their game works on Linux would be making sure their game works on both of your machines.
While true, I think you missed my point.

The gen pop (not devs) are using the survey to try to guestimate how many Linux users are on steam, and often they break that statistic down to each distro also.

Devs aside, my point is about how gen pop are understanding and using said data.
