Linux user share on Steam continues rising — highest for years again

While it's nice to see the linux user count go up, I can't help but wonder if many of those decks are people like me who have both the deck and a desktop linux computer.

In my case, I still use both for gaming on steam. So, in a situation like this, statistically depending on how it was counted it would appear that either:

a) There's now two distros counted for the user (Both percentages could go up)
b) That steam lost a distro user and gained a steam deck user (or vice versa, only one percentage goes up, while causing the other to drop)

In any case, it would need to be clarified as it may artificially make it appear that either you have more Linux users on steam than in actuality or that some distros are losing ground, when in fact they're just not being counted because the user has two distros being used on steam and only one of those is counted.

VRChat adds Easy Anti-Cheat, community not happy but Linux and Steam Deck work fine

So, it sounds like initially the developers were accepting and trusting of mods to the client and such giving people some freedom of choice. However, people abused that trust and used it to harass - in multiple ways: abuse, account stealing, crashing games etc - innocent players so in order to protect their game and players they had to put an anti-cheat/mod in place?

In my view the players who were running with modified clients and harassing people got what they deserved. Should have just kept it civil and not abused the developers trust/acceptance.

Honestly, from what has been said / what was happening this sounds reasonable to me. Shouldn't have abused it..

I say this as someone who used to make video game mods, and who regularly mods my games. However, I do it offline as to not interfere with others peoples experience.

My view pretty much is, and always has been: Sure go ahead and mod your games, cheat and have fun. But keep it offline and don't use it to cheat or abuse other players.

In this case: Blame the people running modified clients and abusing people. Not the developers.

Valve warns about Steam Deck temperatures, plus a Deck Beta Update out

Finally given the option to buy a Steam Deck on Monday, now on shipping soon!

Assuming there's no need for RMA, I'll probably throw it straight into Beta mode and giving SteamOS a proper spin, but I have to ask, for all the lucky deckers out there who got it months ago, how are standard distro's running with the Deck? I'm talking Fedora, OpenSUSE, Arch etc etc etc.

I mean it is a PC right? Haven't seen any GoL articles about this yet  - There's plenty of articles about getting Windows 11/10 on the Deck, but I can't find much about general distros on it.

I heard that during the last Steam outage, a lot of Deck users couldn't login / use the device even in desktop mode (with no option to go offline, just thrown to login failed), I figure a standard distro would easily fix that?

It would be cool to see how regular Linux is on this thing, as I plan to do this myself at some point

System76 announce the 67% Launch Lite keyboard

Quoting: fenglengshunas an accountant, every time i see a keyboard without numpad, i just feel so scared...
Same here!

I always feel like I have a "half keyboard" when the numpad is missing!

I don't use it solely for accounting, but anything with lots of numbers? Has to be on a numpad! I can blitz through a lot of number entries using the numpad, even for using a calculator. The numbers above the letters always feel slower to me for number entry and less comfortable, I use them for an odd number here and there, but for serious number entry it has to be the numpad, so my numpads tend to be more worn than the letter keys. My last keyboard had to meet three criteria:

At least 5 programmable "G" buttons (Used for lockscreen, language entry switching, workspace switching etc), have a numpad and be in UK qewtry, ended up settle on a corsair keyboard.

I would really like to see some more budget friendly options from these vendors, I mean having a bit of power for a ton of money is fun and all.

But if you're like me who rarely uses laptops, it's not worth getting an overly powerful machine and certainly not worth the price tag of £1,000+.

My current laptop (from 2008, it was even budget at the time - only £250) thankfully still mostly suites my needs and has the performance I need with Arch. But its battery is long dead and I can't find a replacement. I would like to replace it, but the fact is if I'm going to spend £1,000+ on hardware, that's going to be in the desktop form factor (or server) where the power will actually be used. My current laptop was last booted around 3 months ago for updates and my laptop basically only gets used for showing data to accountants from GnuCash in meetings.

So some budget options, much like the general laptop market has - would be appreciated I'd be happy to pay £400-500, but £1,000+ for a laptop that will sit in its bag 98% of the time? Nope.

Sadly, when I do eventually replace my laptop it will probably end up being a cheap windows laptop as it appears to be the only option. (Promptly followed by a Linux install)

Just my 2c.

(To be clear, I am talking about reduced spec level for budget friendly, not high spec)

Fanatical offering a nice bundle of Steam Deck Verified games
25 Jun 2022 at 9:29 am UTC

Fanatical: Pick up to 8 games to get a discount!

Me: Picks all the games + adds a couple others from another bundle because I didn't have any of them *facepalm*.

It's almost as bad as with Steam, I didn't have any of the Assassin's Creed games on PC, I only have them on that old piece of junk* PS3 I had, so steam had the whole collection on deal last weekend, so ended up picking up every AC game I could on steam for £124 in total, on the flip side I now have every AC game, excluding that epic exclusive one   (Which is a good deal, considering without the discount you're talking 300+)

* Piece of junk because I had 3 different PS3's die on me, including an original launch day 60GB. Then they topped it off by loosing all PSN user data in a security breach... I refuse to buy any Sony products after that.

Looks like iFixit have Steam Deck parts available now (Update: it's gone)

Can't even get the steam deck itself yet (ordered 17th july) let alone parts for it

On the plus side, if they do enough parts I might be able to build my own without needing to wait for valve's less than 1 minute since launch a week's worth of pre-orders sent schedule for UK? :woot:

(for reference, valve, per week are shipping on average 20-60 seconds worth of orders for UK each week - at the rate valve are shipping I'll get mine by early 2023, or mid 2023 by my calculations based on 1 minute's worth of orders per week, despite them claiming I'm in Q3, I'm just waiting for the next delayed announcement.)
