Quoting: GuestI sure as hell would come across annoyances too if I had to setup a build environment on Windows or OSX!I've had the honour a few months ago. Getting anything working on Windows is a huge PITA if one is used to code on Linux.
Quoting: GuestEdit: the blog post says:I'm curious: Why would using ALSA directly cause such issues? If your system has X11, ALSA for audio, and an OpenGL 3.2 driver, it should be good.so it looks like it will be good indeed. Not sure if using ALSA directly is a good idea but we’ll see how much stuttering and crackling people get :)..
Darkest Dungeon, a popular gothic roguelike RPG now on Linux with a public Beta

It seems to be running well with the open source AMD drivers.

Quoting: liamdaweOnce it has a downloadable Linux version, direct Steam purchases are fine.Ok, already got it ;-)
The issues arise with people buying before a Linux version is out, or using keys from resellers.

I'm wondering: If we buy right now, will this get counted as a Linux or Windows purchase?
Looks like Darkest Dungeon may finally release for Linux next week

Isn't Sunless Sea already available? It was part of some Humble Indie Bundle iirc, and it shows in my Steam Library under Linux&Steam OS.

Performance was quite OK for me (Radeon R9 270X, open source drivers), until Snowfall was released. I don't know if it's the addon, or if it's the patch that was released at the same time, but performance greatly decreased for me at that point. It's still playable, of course, but it's far from the smooth gameplay that was possible before...
And about the time I played: Steam says 78 hours.

Since I learned about UnReal World on this website, I haven't played much else any more. Sure, sometimes I dug out Dwarf Fortress, Kerbal Space Program, and of course Deponia: Doomsday, but those were just short distractions from my new addiction: surviving in the unforgiving wilderness of the UnReal World.
Seriously, UnReal World has a similar 'Just one more turn' feeling as Civilization, just that in URW there aren't turns, but tasks to complete, yet sure enough every 'I'll just fell one more tree' will be followed by a 'Oh, wait, there was a noise coming from my trap, I'll check that out', which in turn will be followed by 'I'll also quickly skin the trapped animal', what leads to 'I should start tanning the skin and cook the meat', and so forth.

Wait, weren't the Obsidian developers cautious about any new Linux releases? I remember something about it not being worthwhile [External Link] and such....
Anyhow, if that game really gets released for Linux, I'll definitely buy it.

That Canonical took this step makes me quite happy. The proprietary AMD drivers are a huge PITA imho, while the open source drivers just work (if you have the required firmware files, but they are installed by default on almost any distribution, Debian being the most notable exception). Performance is not up to par, but it's not very far off any more, with some cards and workloads the open source drivers actually outperform their proprietary counterpart [External Link].
Also, Intel tends to get a lot of praise for their open source Linux drivers. Feature-wise the open source AMD drivers are quite similar [External Link], what I'd consider a big plus point regarding the suitability of the AMD open source drivers for everyday usage.
The main drawback of the open source drivers is currently OpenCL, where important features such as image support are still missing, so if one is using OpenCL applications, one might have bad luck getting them to work with the open source AMD drivers.

Quoting: GuestI guess I'm screwed. Most of the games on my machine don't run without the driver. I love Grid Autosport and it didn't run at all with the open source drivers. Btw, I didn't buy a machine with AMD Graphics Card on purpose. My laptop's HD failed and I started using Ubuntu on an external HD while I got that one fixed(I remembered Linux could do that from the days I tried it and abandoned it because it wouldn't run my games and Adobe software). After that I fell in love with Ubuntu and decided to keep it but gaming has been unnecessarily painful. Good thing I installed windows on that external HD :/GRID doesn't run with Mesa 11.1.x, but afaik it runs pretty well with 11.2, which should be released in a few days [External Link].
What game would you most like to see on Linux this year?

Quoting: fleskOff the top of my head; Age of Empires II. Might go for something else once I've thought a bit about it though. Maybe Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, or A Hat in Time, though that one's not even released yet.You might be interested in the OpenAge [External Link] project. Maybe we'll soon be able to play an AoE II clone natively.
