Lenovo adding Ubuntu & Red Hat on their entire ThinkStation and ThinkPad P lines

Quoting: oldrocker99I bought a lemon Lenovo L340 Touch, on which Manjaro was a garbled screen, and I could install EndeavourOS only, and then it started hanging during boot. I returned it and got another laptop. It had, of course, come with Win10.

Lenovo:'( was the last company I would have expected a lemon from.
I've been up to my neck in hardware for over two decades and I learned a valuable lesson: it's OK to favor and trust certain brands (to some extent) while avoiding some other brands. The top brands can have failed models just as lower quality brands can have successful models. This is where experienced and pragmatic people can help in recommending a number of manufacturers, picking brands that are the least likely to fail. No guarantees, just less chances of disappointment. :D

Quoting: HoriIt's because Bill Gates invented the coronavirus, and because Windows comes with 5G preinstalled.
You never know when the next Windows update comes and it installs a microchip in you!

Wake up sheeple!
Microsoft's in cahoots with the CCP? So that's why I should wear a tin-foil hat when using a Windows system.
I'm not sure they're in cahoots, but probably some "friendly" competition in who breaks privacy more efficiently. :P

Akurra to support Linux without a stretch-goal on Kickstarter

This looks great! :D I wishlisted it on Steam and I hope it will come out as planned, hopefully with Linux support as well. :)

What have you been playing recently and what are your thoughts?

I played Minetest [External Link] with the MineClone 2 [External Link] game on top. :) It's a nice combination, with both still having work to do to offer a similar experience to Minecraft, but they're pretty good already. Gotta love all the free software effort out there! :D

Intel chipsets have another security issue, this time it's 'unfixable'
8 Mar 2020 at 8:13 am UTC

I've been eyeballing AMD CPUs for a while now, being sick and tired of Intel's crap. It sucks that the AMD CPUs also have issues, but at least they're fewer. What can I do? Spend a fortune on a RISC-V PC? Unlikely. I'd rather move my sensitive computing to a Raspberry Pi 4. :P

Proton 5.0-3 for Steam Play released, Direct3D 12 support for Metro Exodus
22 Feb 2020 at 8:36 pm UTC

Although fully updated, I can only see 5.0-2 in Steam -> Settings -> Steam Play. Can anyone actually see 5.0-3?

Lurking in the Dark is a sweet idea for a game and it's now open source
21 Feb 2020 at 11:57 pm UTC

Well that was fun, for about 6-7 minutes. :D Surely this kind of game would need more types of foes and traps to be worth spending hours with it, but a second tower or surfacing from some underground levels would've been fun even with the same assets. It's simple but the design and atmosphere make it great, and releasing it as open source is awesome. :D

Proton 5.0 for Steam Play released - it's a huge update (updated)

Samorost 3 is still broken, tested with 5.0-2. With 4.11-12 it works.
