AMD Zen looks like it will release at CES in January 2017

I just built a new system for my mom and had to go intel for that very reason, the AMD chipset were lagging behind and I wasn't in a place to wait for the new stuff. I ended up getting her an Intel G4400 (dual core) with 8GB DDR4 and a 128gb SM951 m.2 drive. Insane overkill for what she needs, and it's super cool and quiet that you can't even tell it's turned on.
Really hoping Zen isn't just vaporware hype.

Quoting: MyeulCI must admit I was looking around at these cheap Xeon mods to work on consumer boards, but I can manage for now with what I've got. My system is fine for light gaming and I really want the benefits of a full system upgrade... Lower power consumption, usb 3+, m.2, ddr4.Quoting: lejimsterYep same here, except I have had the same intel platform for 8 years now! A good ol' Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz, hehe.I have had almost the same for quite some time (a bit downclocked compared to yours), and I upgraded a bit of time ago to a Xeon with a socket mod 771->775. Happy so far :)

Before that I had an Athlon X2 3800+ I believe and a bunch of other Athlon's, K6-2 and Intel PII's (wow they were weird, cartridge style cpu and the one I had got very hot and instable @ stock 266Mhz (lol, pushing the limits).
Needless to say, I'm a tech enthusiast and coming up to a decade without running an AMD cpu seems wrong. I really hope Zen is the answer, I'm waiting until launch before I decide what my new system is going to be. I'm hoping AMD Zen 8 core (16 thread) along side a Vega 10 GPU, but we will see...

Quoting: KimyrielleI used AMD a lot like ten years ago, but they certainly fell behind Intel, so my last 2 PCs were Intel platforms. I wouldn't mind seeing some actual competition in the CPU market again. Monopolies are bad.Yep same here, except I have had the same intel platform for 8 years now! A good ol' Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz, hehe.

The open source Vulkan driver for AMD 'radv' has been merged into Mesa

Yep. This is great news. Also, I don't expect AMD to release a competing open source driver. The radv will be the priority and hopefully AMD will contribute to improve it down the line.
Also now we are at OGL 4.5. I hope they can focus more on bug fixes and things like the shader cache, which has been planned but took at back seat.

OK I'm defo buying this just on principle now. Have to support devs who push out Linux games even though we are a minority right now.
EVERSPACE, the amazing looking space shooter should be on Linux before the end of September

Another reason to possibly support guys like Yaakuro [External Link], as it may help people like these devs since they're using UnrealEngine4.
I always think these space shooters look impressive, but I never buy them. I think probably because these type of games tend to give me motion sickness when I've played them in the past.

Rocket League updated for SteamOS & Linux, AA now works, FPS no longer locked to 60

Glad to see fixes landing so soon and hopefully the crashes won't be too hard for the 2 guys porting the game to fix. I will probably wait until they've nailed this problem as I think this would drive me crazy.

Quoting: JarnoYay, great! I think I'm going to buy it in 6 to 8 weeks.I think I will be buying it during that period as well. Don't really have time to game at all right now, but after waiting so long to play it, i'd be stupid not to get it now it's finally got a Linux release.

You can help fund the Unreal Engine Editor development specifically for Linux compatibility

I can understand the conflicts. I used to be a massive fan of Epic games, but let's just say Mark Rein is a douchebag.
Anyway... This will help other Linux developers I guess. Vulkan is being worked on @ Epic but desktop support isn't as far along as DX12 right now.
The more engines that support Linux and "just work" without too much head scratching for developers, we will all benefit as Linux gamers...
If I had more money spare I would consider supporting this guy. But 1 patreon at a time is my limit.

Yep, been very impressed with how fast they've put together the radv driver. With the uncertainty of how long it would be for AMD to open source their Vulkan driver (and the possibility they couldn't fully because of IP).. This is awesome news for those of us with AMD graphics.
Unfortunately I don't think *my* GPU is supported in the AMDGPU kernel though, so I haven't tried it out yet. Hopefully that won't be much longer.
We just need the Freesync stuff to land and I'm hoping they open source WattMan.

Ashes of the Singularity developers say Vulkan for their game is pretty far along, Linux after

Ashes is a disappointment as far as Vulkan is concerned though. They had a working Mantle version in early development and then at some point switched focus solely to DX12 not caring about what came of Mantle -> Vulkan. At this point I don't really care if they bring the game to Linux or not.
What I am interested in is Epic getting their Vulkan support in full swing for Unreal Engined titles and what Crytek can produce along with the guys making Star Citizen and not forgetting Unity bring support for Vulkan. Once we have a good amount of highly used game engines with mature Vulkan support, we will naturally start to see more games using Vulkan. But these things take time, I used to work in game development for an Indie studio and trust me, the QA and bug fixing process can really drag on at times. Just look at Rocket League, they've had help from Valve and still no Linux version months after it was promised.

Quoting: wolfyrionWell I am afraid that is not good news :(How long has the full specification been out? 6 months. It's not long enough to expect polished implementations of Vulkan being released. Talos Vulkan support is in BETA, being wrote by 1 guy at Croteam.. Doom had a full team working on OpenGL for years and then they focused on Vulkan, which is why they were able to push it out so fast.
Everyone was so hype for Vulkan and everyone expected miracles like to be easy to create or port games and so on but unfortunately so far not many companies manage to create or port a game with Vulkan API.
Only DOOM(not on Linux) and Talos Principle which is not working well , at my pc is just crashing... We didnt even see any new indie game with Vulkan API.
I really dont know what to expect with Vulkan API it has been so many months and no progress. :S:

Arch users have a kernel available that will allow AMDGPU and the PRO driver on older cards
