NVIDIA driver 550.67 released fixes for VKD3D (Proton), Wayland and more

It hasn't landed on the Ubuntu PPA yet, so I might be wrong, but looking at the release notes, I don't think it will fix flickering on Wayland (this waits for explicit sync fixes), capturing Wayland windows for Discord or Steam Link, or general crashes (this may be on the KDE side). So, I'm not holding my breath in general.

SteamOS 3.5.12 Preview and new Steam Deck Beta and Steam Desktop Beta released

I hope that the WiFi related crash is the one that causes my Deck to switch off immediately when downloading over WiFi while connected to my ISP crappy router. I had to buy an access point just to use my Deck wirelessly.

SteamVR 2.0 Beta released with a big UI overhaul

Quoting: CorbenLooking forward to see Valve giving VR (on Linux) a bit more attention. Sure, the Steam Deck will still have a majority of workforce, but VR on Linux is corrently not in a great state.
My understanding, fully based on Sadly It's Bradley tweets & videos plus some other sources on Twitter and the web, is that Valve is preparing a Linux-based VR headset or a headset/Steam Machine 2 combo. This requires a significant rework of SteamVR, that is not yet ready for the release. We only see some glimps of it - and some bugs related to pieces they rolled out in the beta.

Steam Deck pushed Linux to the highest share on Steam in years

It's also the seventh month with shares above the long term trend line. It might be worth to draw two trend lines: one before the release of Steam Deck and another after the release - this might give better predictions for the future.

OTH, we had a strong growth over most of 2021, followed by a collapse in early 2022, so maybe half a year is too short to play around with trends.

Linux user share on Steam continues rising — highest for years again

Quoting: M@GOidIf SteamOS is 7.6% of ~1,623,600 million Linux users, it is safe to say Valve delivered about 123,000 units so far?
I don't think so?

SteamOS has existed since 2013, and even though it didn't really get competitive in terms of gaming before 4.0 with the inclusion of Proton, it's still available to install on any machine that meets the hardware requirements.

So a large portion is probably Steam Decks, but I wouldn't expect all of it to be.
It explicitly states "SteamOS Holo", which is 3.x, not 2.x Brewmaster, so it's definitely purely Steam Deck users (apart from a few brave souls, who installed vanilla Holo on other PCs).

Edit: Holo (Arch based) is also fundamentally different from Brewmaster (Debian based), so I doubt it would be pooled together. Brewmaster is so ancient, too, that many native games newer than 2020 don't work due to glibc issues.

ARK: Survival Evolved switches away from Linux Native to use Proton

Quoting: GuestValve are fully responsible for the current situation as they require every game sold on the Steam Store to have a Windows executable, as per their developer documentation.
Ok, are you suggesting that Valve is the blocker for studios releasing Linux builds of their games?

Quoting: subI'd rather see the awareness AND SKILLS for Linux grow in developer studios.
This is quite the opposite. :/
But that's not the choice we have. The choice we have is between Proton and very few good quality Linux builds plus a few crappy ports.

It's not like Ark had a good Linux build they ditched for Proton. Ark Linux build was barely playable (I'd say: unplayable). People were manually selecting the Windows version anyway. Valve verified the Proton version on the Deck, knowing how broken the Linux build is.

XWayland 22.1 is out with DRM lease support helping VR on Linux

Quoting: MayeulCSimulaVR perhaps?

I bought my HTC vive second hand for 200€, you just have to settle for something else than the last gen, just like "patient gamers" :D
$3500 for SimulaVR is steep even if it is a standalone work-oriented headset. As you said, if you want VR in Linux, you can be like a "patient gamer" and buy used headsets, or pay premium. Unfortunately for me, I don't have good spots for base stations, so inside-out tracking is a must, so no Linux VR yet. The most promising option is Quest 2 and ALVR, though it still means selling my soul to Facebook/Meta.

Awesome, now I just need a budget VR headset with inside-out tracking that works on Linux :)
