Just tried Dying Light on experimental (both for the first time). Oddly the native port wasn't working for me, so I'm glad it was easy to switch (not sure why Steam needed to redownload the while game, but I'll live).
Buttery smooth and kinda fun to boot.

I was actually meaning something different in my mind when I said support. I was not clear with that, my apologies.
I was thinking more along the lines of commercial/institutional support (I hope that's the right word), as opposed to more kernel/driver support.
Basically how quickly will they discontinue the product/stop supporting it, fixing issues specific to it, etc.
Sorry for being confiusing

Quoting: slaapliedjeThat's a very good point. Also historically, the same reason I've used Nvidia in my Linux build as well.Quoting: denyasisFeral's stuff should run fine on Nvidia. Thats the only card they've always supported, IIRC. Older ports didn't always release with "AMD support" , do to the driver situation, as mentioned by someone above. So the nice thing about a static hardware platform like Steam is they won't need to be chasing constant kernel / mesa updates to get all the features of the GPU enabled. As long as the current kernel / Mesa versions support everything in SteamOS 3.0, then it should be shiny.
While I'm personally still pretty skeptical about the Deck, both in commercial success terms and Valve's long term support, I am genuinely excited that this endeavor seems to be a bit of a pusg to improve Linux gaming on the Steam Ecosystem, which benefits all of us, regardless of the Deck's success.
The problem, in my mind, is usually when a new AMD card comes out, and then you have to use kernels outside what your distribution normally supports (hence can cause random issues that are more difficult to poke around) and bleeding edge mesa libraries. This is the reason I use nvidia. Get a new card, update the nvidia driver (or wait for the distro to update their packages) and boom, you have support.

I mean in one sense, they got more exposure for thier game by doing it then they would normally. How else would they end up on, for example, this site?
No offence to this site here, it just happens to be a very good example/use case.

Quoting: thelimeydragonI do wonder if they really are going to go through everything. There is a ton of just complete junk/trash on Steam that even if it did "work" it's still pure rubbish that no one except for gag-gifts would buy.I think the article from yesterday about that testing and retesting policy seemed to indicate some form of developer submission into a "que". I'm sure that's not the only way something gets tested, but if imagine that might explain it. Developers are submitting it. Makes sense if your putting up junk to grab a few bucks, why not grab a few bucks on another platform too right?

No Man's Sky Sentinel Update gets 'specially optimised' for Steam Deck

Pretty sure it was the default options. No enabling/disabling anything.

Quoting: undeadbydawnSteam Controller works! I played it last year with it. Although, I will admit, I preferred KB+M for the FPS portion, but the controller was really nice for the piloting portion.Quoting: sprocketGood for you. Mine doesn't and never has. Xbox 360 and DualSense, wired and wireless, Steam controller mode off and on, Big picture and standard, over multiple distros.Quoting: undeadbydawnWhat are you talking about? I use a controller on No Mans Sky (via Proton) without issue.Quoting: rustybroomhandleWhat specifically is wrong with its controller support? There not being any.
it claims controllers can be enabled via Big Picture, which doesn't work
I try again with every major update, including this one

Quoting: pete910The assumption is that the older ports that still remain use older opengl and wrapping technology that is less efficient than modern Wine/Proton with DXVK.Quoting: JpxsonI feel bad for Feral, I'm guessing Proton will be selected for all their games.Particular reason why?
Paradox launch a DLC subscription option for Hearts of Iron IV
17 Feb 2022 at 8:08 pm UTC
I'm conflicted a bit by it. I know the idea is to get the subscription, forget about it, and overpay in the long run. But I must admit, it might not be bad for casual pay, presuming you pay upfront to buy the base game, schedule your play time within the subscription window, and cancel it quickly when you are done playing.
I've never purchased anything "subscription" for the PC, I just can't shake the feeling it is a scam, even when it isn't. But I can't knock it for those interested in it.

Quoting: BlackBloodRumHmm, how does this one work? Is it like a game pass? From the article, it appears once you stop paying, you lose access.
What I mean to ask, once your subscription ends, does the DLC that was released during your active subscription remain on your account like a game pass?
Or does it get removed?
If it stays on your account, I could see it being worthwhile.

Good thing they added Deck Support. I'd say this is one of few developers doing Proton support properly and I'm glad they do.
I played the game last year. Ran great via proton, although I think I had the same problem with it that I had with Elite: Dangerous. I struggled to feel "connected" with the world. Everything felt very sterile (I'm not sure if that's the right word)?
Perhaps I had the wrong expectations. I don't think I'm the right target for a crafting type game.
It's still a nice game though. Hopefully that'll get more devs interested in the Deck and Linux in general.

Looks like Witcher 3, STALKER, and Xcom are pretty heavily discounted. I could totally recommend them to anyone. Good games.
Thanks Valve!

Quoting: GuestI like open source and don't like evasive DRM. That's why I like Valve because they are all in on open source and don't have hard core DRMI didn't know Steam was open source?!

Quoting: GuerrillaSort of makes me think Valve would prefer developers to make games for Windows that just target a Proton version rather than encourage native developmentWell, yes. I believe a Windows build is still required to release on Steam. No Linux exclusive releases. Perhaps with the Deck, that has changed, hopefully.
Quoting: Purple Library GuyI have a suspicion they are stockpiling a fair number of games to slap into the "validated" column just as release day arrivesI'd also hazard our catalog probably doesn't have as robust controller support.
