Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is officially coming to SteamOS & Linux, port by Feral Interactive

From the posts by Feral on this site, it is clear that maintaining an OpenGL port is quite a bit of work with lots of specific optimisations to satisfy the needs of OpenGL an various platforms. This should be much better with Vulkan. So maintaining Vulkan ports (from DX12 at least) should be cheaper in the long run.

Quoting: nocriOr maybe I am wrong ;-)You may not be wrong about whether Vulkan will be used for this port, but I don't agree with your reasoning.

Quoting: MadVillainThis game is made with DX11, so if their engine was not capable of supporting OpenGL at the moment of development (which I really doubt). It supports PS4. So it has no problem with a very different API. This is about whether the effort of the people who need to do it is more effectively used elsewhere. In other words, money.

Quoting: MohandevirMmmm... Interresting.Indeed. No news yet can go either way. I suppose that in time it will be easier to maintain both a Metal and Vulkan path for DX12 games than it is to do DX11 to OpenGL. But before that is the case, they'll need to have that Vulkan stuff done. Maybe they don't know yet whether they can make that happen in time.

Seems like Vulkan is not dismissed from the start...

Quoting: MacabreHeartSeeing as it might actually convince others to do Linux ports, like Doom or that new game by the Limbo creators, why exactly would Denuvo coming be a problem? Aside from the obvious dislike of DRM angle that is.Not all DRM is equal. As I understand it, Denuvo is a pretty terrible one. You're basically tied to their service. If they give up, your game is gone. It's not unthinkable that the next major protection is developed by some other company, leaving Denuvo in the dust with no guarantees about you purchase at all.

The only slightly worrying thing is that Feral said there was "no news" about Denuvo being enabled. I'd be surprised if that thing was ported to Linux, but if it was it could that would be a problem.

Quoting: omer666The wine appdb says that you need to enable a specific setting.Quoting: WorMzyAwesome news! I've been replaying the previous game in Crossover (works perfectly, btw) to rekindle my interest in the series. Gonna be looking forward to this! When I tried to play it on Crossover 15 I got a black screen, how did you proceed?

I'm wondering what this from news item on their website means:
Anyway, time to complete my Two Tribes collection.
This morning, the realization set in that today truly marks the end of an era, and that a lot is riding on the success of RIVE.and
Bye for now!It sounds like they may consider something more. Maybe not as Two Tribes, but it doesn't sound too final.

If you don't own Company of Heroes 2 yet, it's now 75% off on Steam, go get it

I'll get it now. Even if I don't really have time to actually play it, it don't mind getting something for the support.

Quoting: TcheyNot sure about it. I loved Coh 1, but i think about CoH 2 quite negatively because of all the DLC coming with. Should i change my mind ?You can now get the whole thing together in the Master Collection for 13,74€. So you won't ever have to see it as a bunch of DLCs.

EVERSPACE, the amazing looking space shooter should be on Linux before the end of September

I recently bought a new joystick for X-Plane and found myself playing X3 again as well. This may fit very nicely too!
This unfortunately confirms what I suspected already. That Linux support for UE4 is not quite as painless as you'd want it to be. A few quirks aside, Unity3D seems to better in that department.

In fact, our lead tech has spent quite some time on his past weekends to make progress with the Linux build.Let me use this random place to put a big "Thank you"! Not all devs would do the extra effort to get Linux working. Of course, I'll have to say the other thank you when it releases. :D

I need to think whether this is funny or sad. So basically there was a huge problem with Armello with DLC as DRM not being possible. And now they are going to allow microtransactions, which is exactly the same sort of DRM. I think someone higher up must have done some calculations and decided that DRM free was not worth missing the boat on microtransactions entirely.
