I've been watching Stellaris since before it came out, but hadn't been able to afford it yet. However I'm just starting a new job and the 1.5 update and Utopia seem like a really great time to get into it. :)

Quoting: AnxiousInfusionHas it really been four months since I changed anything? Damn it's time to buy something new.Heh. Two years, eight months, and counting, for me (since I built my computer), and that's unlikely to change in the next year or so barring freak hardware failure. Hence why this monthly reminder feels like being asked "Did you cut your hair recently?" every single day for me. :P But hey, I'm sure I'll be happy for the reminder when I finally do change something. ^_^
A look at how much RAM you might need as a Linux gamer

I built my Linux gaming rig 2½ years ago with 8 GB originally, but upgraded to 16 GB a month later after seeing how much RAM various programs required (I also learned about swap partitions and what happens when you run out of RAM without one set up! :D). This turned out to be necessary for me and a buddy playing Minecraft together, as we play large modpacks and I host the server, so with various Feed The Beast modded servers + client running it takes up ~70% of my RAM, judging from the system monitor. I usually have to close my several-dozen-tabs-open Chrome in order to run it, plus anything else that's eating a significant amount of RAM, but it works fine other than that.
I finally completed Half-Life 2 on Linux and it was quite the experience

I only bought and played Half-Life 2 two years ago myself, but I then got Episodes 1 and 2 and enjoyed them quite a bit as well, so I can recommend them. Episode 2 finally decouples the flashlight and your sprint energy, and it's hard to go back after that. :P

Quoting: g000hIt seems barely any difference in price to the regular GTX 1080.$100 dollars is a pretty big difference in price, in absolute terms. ;) Even in relative terms it's ~16% more expensive.
GTX 1080 in USA ~ $600
GTX 1080 ti in USA ~ $700
I would have expected it to be $900. Just sayin'
A small tip for anyone working with Kdenlive and large video files

Yep, proxies are pretty great. :D I'm glad you found them! Not that I consider myself a Kdenlive pro, I've just been using it for about 7–8 months.
If the extra file space is a problem, you can also delete the proxy file(s) after you're done rendering the movie, they can always be recreated if you want to use the raw footage again. If you leave them, though, and use the raw footage in another video project it'll have the proxy already available and not need to recreate it.

My computer's only 2½ years old at this point so I'm not planning on a CPU upgrade for another few years, but always good to see more competition in the marketplace!
How to record videos on Linux using OBS Studio with separate audio tracks for gameplay and microphone

I've been doing separate recordings of game audio and microphone for a while now (though in a non-standard way*), and it really is great. Being able to adjust sound independently is fantastic.
*currently I'm using SimpleScreenRecorder for computer audio and an old smartphone to record my voice, which I put together during editing. Not exactly elegant, and when I have the funds for a new (good) microphone I hope to get this sort of thing working, but it works to establish the general principle.

Is this a standalone game, or a mod? I'm confused.
Into The Breach, the new strategy game from the makers of FTL will be on Linux

Quoting: xaviI didn't know that FTL has mods!!Unfortunately it's not really a supported feature, and requires a fan-written program to inject the mods' code which (as far as I know) only runs on Windows (though maybe with Wine?). I briefly played around with mods a little bit prior to switching to Linux, and it was kinda fiddly. Although that experience convinced me I was happy with the vanilla game, it would be really neat if mods were actually supported. Hopefully they'll design Into The Breach with this in mind.
