A round-up of our Steam Deck content — the videos keep coming

Quoting: eldarionOnly time will tell. It's just that recently the news here looked too much as a Valve PR satalite then a Linux gaming news site. More about steam deck itself and less about actual games.
Take heart, then, because the Deck just launched, so this is the biggest it will ever be and the highest concentration of articles you'll ever see about it. As more and more people actually get their hands on one the cachet of exclusivity will wear off, and apart from some big articles I foresee in the future along the lines of "Epic Games caves and ports Fortnite to Linux due to demand from millions of Deck owners" it'll gradually fade into the background fabric of people's lives as everyone who wants one just…has one.

Valve expect to make 'hundreds of thousands' of Steam Decks next month
4 Mar 2022 at 6:29 pm UTC

To everyone claiming* that "Actually, 'tens of thousands' could mean 10k + 1!", I'd like to point out that "tens of thousands" could also technically mean 100k − 1 and "hundreds of thousands" could also mean 1M − 1, so if we run those numbers instead, we get 2,099,997 Steam Decks produced by the end of June.
(And of course, that's not taking into account the "beyond that it'll grow even quicker" comment after the end of May.)

*Debatably; that's the level of pedantry I'd expect out of Microsoft lawyers fighting a billion-dollar anti-trust fine, and I don't agree that anyone using "tens of thousands" colloquially—as Yang is clearly doing here—would agree that it could be interpreted that way.

This might be an odd request, but could you try running a game which has a native Linux version that works perfectly fine on desktop but is listed as Unsupported? I'm seeing some really surprising ones pop up from my library (e.g. Surviving Mars, or Ultimate Chicken Horse, which I'd've thought would be a shoe-in for the Deck). Do they run on the Deck (and just have such a crappy experience, for whatever reason, that Valve marked them Unsupported)? Or do they really not run? (If so, well…that's that I suppose, it just seems weird that Linux-native games that probably aren't using some sort of anti-cheat or anything wouldn't run on the Deck). Thanks.

Gabe hand-delivers signed Steam Decks, sounds like a Steam Deck 2 is planned

Actually, announcing a Steam Deck 2 (with no release date) might be a good way to quiet all those people talking about how Valve "never stick to anything" and predicting them to give up on the Deck in a few months.

PipeWire is the future for Linux audio and I am sold on it

Just like how electric light bulbs became "the standard going forward" for interior lighting over candles, because of all the numerous advantages. You can still light your house with candles if you really want to though.

Hmm, let's math it out: so if March is "the first month", then "tens of thousands" is at least 20k. Then at least 200k for "hundreds of thousands" in April ("the second month"). "Beyond that it'll grow even quicker" but we don't have numbers, so assuming another (counterfactual) 200k for May and June, that's at bare minimum 620k units sold by the end of Q2, and probably a lot more. On the assumption that April is instead "the first month" (maybe they're still shaking the production line out in March), that's still 420k units (and again, probably a lot more).

Exciting times!

PipeWire is the future for Linux audio and I am sold on it

Quoting: VulphereOne of the reasons why PipeWire was created is to unify consumer audio (high latency) and pro audio (low latency) in a common ecosystem (ala macOS' CoreAudio), CoreAudio has great concept and I'm glad PipeWire brought that concept to Linux (and eventually will provide long-sought stability in Linux audio ecosystem)
This is probably a stupid question, but…why is there a split in the first place? Why can't consumer audio be low latency too? Or is this massive overkill like providing the average office worker with a monitor with a 500 Hz refresh rate?

Valheim updated with full gamepad and Steam Deck support

Was this from when they were accidentally testing Proton versions even when native versions were available, and they haven't yet updated with the new test? Or it could just be the native version doesn't work well on the Deck. Actually, maybe you could test that Liam.

Actually actually, that brings up a question: how easy is it to select between native and Proton versions of games on the Deck?

Steam Next Fest is live once again with plenty of indie demos

Nicest adventure game in this event that I have played.
I didn't play this demo because I'm generally not really into adventure games, but from the trailer it looked really well done and I might put it on the wishlist. I got a good laugh out of the trailer conversation:
"Someone broke into my grandfather's place last night."
"Oh, wow. Is he ok?"
"No, he's dead."
"What?!?"
"No, I mean, he passed away a while back. I'm just here to sell his house."
