1 week from release, Steam Deck hits well over 640 Playable games

Quoting: GuestI understand all that, only some of the "playable" games really shouldn't be, as they have issues, like crashing mid-game or corrupting save data.

Issues that are yet to be fixed by devs should mean a game fails the verification completely.
But…it's no worse an experience than you'd get playing on a PC? Because the Deck is a (mobile) PC. People live with crashes and corruptions on the desktop (they're annoying, and we hope and expect they get fixed, but I bet there are zero games on Steam that haven't crashed at least once for someone out there). Why should we suddenly hold the Deck to a much higher standard? "Playable", and even "verified", don't mean "Valve certify that this game is utterly, 100% bug-free and you will never have a problem with it or your money back"; they just mean that that game has passed some or all of Valve's criteria for how good an experience playing it on an 8-inch screen with a controller by default will be.

Inspired by Cube World, the free Veloren 0.12 release is out

Been keeping a vague eye on Veloren for a while now (being interested in learning Rust, and it being one of the more prominent games written in Rust). It hasn't quite caught my interest enough to actually check out, but perhaps I should give it a try one of these days.

Quoting: scaineI've had my money's worth with this game over the years and don't play any more, but I was still disappointed to hear that I have to "migrate" my account to be a Microsoft Live account in order to login and play.
Me too, especially since just this month I'm finally, for the first time in four years, in a position to host a server again to play with a friend I used to do that a lot with. I mean, I'll probably still do it, but c'mon, I already migrated from a Minecraft account to a Mojang account some years ago, it's getting ridiculous at this point.

Quoting: GuestAnd why on earth are Valve marking games as "playable" that still have issues?
Because if they didn't have issue, they'd be marked "verified".

"Playable" means just that: it's possible to play this game on the Steam Deck. Doesn't mean it's crash free, or that you'll never encounter bugs in it (that happens in Windows too for many games). Just that you can play it.

Quoting: whizseThey are still focusing on testing games owned by Deck reservation holders right? So I guess peoples Steam libraries are quite random?
Oh, that's an interesting thought. Did Valve say that somewhere? Would make a lot of sense.

Proton Experimental heats up with fixes coming, plus a disk space saving measure

Yeah. If it's "new games on Proton" or "no games", I will take new games. The last ~decade has clearly shown that even a concerted push from Valve, the de facto kingmaker of PC gaming, is not enough to effect lasting change in the number of companies making Linux-native versions. It's becoming increasingly obvious that the only way we're going to get that is by increasing Linux's share of the market, and as Purple Library Guy said, that needs people—specifically gamers—to change OS, which they're not likely to do if they can't play their favorite games. And if, in the meantime while we wait for Linux market share to rise, the Proton version performs indistinguishably from a native version…well, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's good enough for me!

Quoting: rustybroomhandleAnd the selection still seems super random. But then I keep seeing people excited to play things on Deck that I have never even heard of. So maybe not so random.
I suppose that, even though Valve keep hyping how it'll run AAA games, they have to know that not everyone is going to buy this in order to play such games, so it makes good sense to be showing off as wide a range of games as possible before release.

Quoting: denyasisI think the article from yesterday about that testing and retesting policy seemed to indicate some form of developer submission into a "que".
¿Qué? Do you mean a "queue"?

Check your Steam Library against Steam Deck compatibility easily
16 Feb 2022 at 5:05 am UTC

VERIFIED: 14 games (8.59%)
PLAYABLE: 15 games (9.2%)
UNSUPPORTED: 0 games (0.0%)
UNKNOWN: 134 games (82.21%)

Up to 18% playable+, from 14% yesterday.

Valve have explicitly said they're hiring people to help with this verification process. While I'm sure they'll have some permanent employees continuing to monitor the steady trickle of games coming in into the future, for this first Herculean effort I wouldn't be at all surprised if they simply hired a few hundred contractors for a few months (using the money from TF 2 cosmetics, or some other rounding error in their budget) to get through the initial push. It's an eclectic selection of games right now, and slow, because they're testing a wide variety of things and shaking out the UI, but I've no doubt that in the next week and a half leading up to February 25 the flood gates will open and we'll see thousands of games ranked which they're probably sitting on right now.

Also by stretching it out rather than just saying "Here are 5k games that are at least playable" they encourage people to get invested and keep coming back to see if a game they want to play has been listed yet.
