Hmm, can I finish up my max-size galaxy game before this comes out? :S: Time to find out! :D

Team Fortress 2 gets a nice tribute to Rick May, plus a few minor fixes

I'll definitely need to fire up TF2 this month and check those out to pay my respects.

I also coincidentally just downloaded voice packs for the various mercs for XCOM 2 a week or two before this happened, time to give Soldier a suitably glorious part in retaking Earth in my current playthrough!

Software news: Inkscape finally hits 1.0 and Krita 4.3.0 gets a first Beta
7 May 2020 at 1:29 pm UTC

Ah, Inkscape. First found it maybe 10 years ago now? Wow, how time flies. It was my first introduction to the concept of Scalable Vector Graphics, and I was intrigued. I've used it off and on since then for many things, and loved every minute of it. I've recorded time-lapse videos of myself creating vector versions of flags from Europa Universalis 4 so that the wiki could have larger-scale versions of them, and made artwork and informative graphics. So cool to see it finally reach 1.0, and looking at the change log there's a lot of good stuff in there that I'll need to find reason to check out soon! :)

On the other hand I've never actually used Krita, I don't think. How does it compare to GIMP (which I'm moderately familiar with)? Not in a "which is better" way, I just want an honest evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses (or maybe the different design goals) of each. I'm always interested in finding and learning another cool FOSS tool. :)

Quoting: PhiladelphusLooks interesting, but how exactly do you use it? I see it has instructions on getting the dependencies in the readme (and I'm on Debian so that's no problem), but do you just download and run the Python script after that? Am I missing instructions somewhere?
That's it! Early days yet, but when we reach our next release milestone we'll sort out a proper Howto guide with it as well.
Thanks. :) Seemed like it worked, though I'll have to play around with it a bit and figure out what it all does (not ever having used the overlay before).

Quoting: MrNilssonHey, sorry for the late reply. Yes, it's now possible to play it with a custom Proton version.

Just download this one [External Link] and extract it into: .steam/root/compatibilitytools.d

I also made a topic in the forum.
Huh! :O Ok, interesting, thanks. Admittedly, I haven't tried dealing with custom Proton versions yet and I've got a few new games absorbing my attention just at the moment, but I will definitely keep this in mind. :D My birthday's coming up in a few weeks…

I've been beating my head against Filament mostly this week, for that sweet sweet dopamine hit from finally figuring out a new puzzle…though Noita also came out with a big new update…and I really want to get back to playing XCOM: Chimera Squad…the release of which interrupted my playthroughs of XCOM 2, Stellaris with the Federations expansion, and Cities: Skylines with the Sunset Harbor expansion…

Meanwhile my sister's complaining about being stuck at home and not having enough to do. I just don't get non-gamers. :P

Quoting: MrNilssonI'm going to play Planet Zoo and some CS:GO this weekend.
Do you mean playing Planet Zoo on Linux? (And if so, how?) I've been interested in it since it was announced, but it's been listed as borked on ProtonDB since release, though I just checked and see two positive reports.

Valve drops support for SteamVR on macOS to focus on Linux & Windows
2 May 2020 at 10:36 am UTC

Quoting: CreakI am mostly worried about the reason why they dropped VR for an entire platform that has more users than Linux's. Obviously, financially, it makes little sense.
The first thing that comes to my mind is, sure, MacOS may have more users than Linux in absolute terms, but what if you just compare the number of VR users? From the points others have raised in the comments it's not too far-fetched to think that there are more Linux VR users than Mac ones. We might not have access to those numbers, but it's a safe bet that Valve does. From that perspective (plus all the difficulties people have raised with developing for MacOS), this probably is the financially sensible solution.

Though it's also Valve, who do their own thing. :) Betting on Linux was hardly financially sensible*! They could just be tired of dealing with MacOS, or have something else in mind.

*at the time, obviously I and they both think it's a good long-term investment but I'm hardly sure we've collectively spent enough money on Steam to pay off the work done on Linux support yet.

Filament is out now and might be my favourite puzzle game of 2020

This game is absolutely amazing. I first heard about from the post here a few months back, and got in on release. I've already put…*checks*…uh, 14 hours into it. I may have stayed up far too late a few night craving that sweet, sweet dopamine hit for finishing a puzzle and getting some tidbits of the surprisingly compelling story (still trying to figure out just what on Earth "Arnold" happened to the crew). The puzzles are, as Liam mentioned, all variations on a very simple theme, but they all work quite well and the ability to jump around as you like between different types definitely helps stop that feeling of being unable to make progress.

There are also an absolutely insane amount of secrets which unlocked extra hidden archive messages scattered throughout the game. There are some obvious ones, with collectible cards you can find with numbers on them, but I've started finding well-hidden ones in the environment. I solved a sliding puzzle (which doesn't slide in-game) using GIMP, and even found a tray of seedlings which served as a password! I've still got lots to find, too, so I imagine I'm going to be playing this game for quite some time.

I can't forget to mention the music, which is lovely. Very peaceful and soothing, and loops perfectly, so it never gets too tiring. (Though for some reason I'm always surprised when it changes between floors of the ship! :D) I'm really glad I shelled out for the Marmalade Edition which comes with the soundtrack.

Summary: if you want a beautiful-looking game with relaxing music which will fry your brain with addictive and ingenious puzzle design which requires real thinking to solve but will make you feel like a genius when you do, then you really should check out this game.

(In a cute nod to the story, if you join the developers' Discord server, you get your very own color-based code name assigned. ^_^)

Quoting: CatKillerI'm sure that each of those 3 people using 32-bit gaming machines are doing so for a very good reason, but it's not like that number is ever going to trend upwards.
Ha! Pretty sure it was two people a while back. Percentages are weird, though, so I don't know if they changed.
I was going to say, I distinctly remember it being two last time I checked, like a year ago! :D
