Star Labs introduce the small and mighty StarLite Mk IV

I feel bad for these lowend laptop makers considering the deck is about to come out. They're not bad devices and for pure productivity the larger and higher res screen is nice but I imagine if the deck gets accessories that make it more into a convertible laptop it could swallow most of this lowend market

Valve launches Deck Verified, to show off what games will work well on the Steam Deck

Quoting: elmapulagain, that was an retraction from their first message.

The way I remember their first message was that one hundred percent Steam compatibility* was their eventual goal for the Steam Deck rather than a "promise" of the state of things when the Steam Deck first shipped. Of course they should have known how people tend to hear what they want to hear.

*(Of course this would be with the obvious caveat of the form factor not being appropriate for certain games such as VR titles.)

actually, it might have been "playable"
but their definion of playable is not the same as verified...

VR exclusive games are always marked unsupported on the deck even if they could run perfectly on Linux or even on the deck's hardware. This is said explicitly in the valve video.

Quoting: JauRight now, people only see "windows" even if we can guarantee 100% compatibility [with proton].

I'm not sure what the issue is. If you only have a windows build that's all that should show. If your game works in proton that's gonna get you at least a playable rating on the deck and on protondb so anyone who doesn't care about native can play without issue. And the people who do care about native should know.

I'll bite. What specifically to you, prey tell, are discord's "crazy rules?" I read their community guidelines and it seems like pretty standard and reasonable stuff considering they are hosting it on their servers. Is there something specific you want to talk about that discord prevents you from?

It might be a hopeless endeavor to attach ProtonDB info since the info may change at any point in time as Proton matures, plus the rolling nature of Proton Experimental makes it even more of a moving target.
Not to mention protondb’s rating system is not very helpful. What can you expect from a game rated gold for instance? Or Silver? Do you have to configure stuff to get it working? Do you need a custom version of proton? What kind of performance should you expect? I cannot know without reading reports because their grading system plus the way people make reports is not helpful.

Linux lands on Mars with Perseverance and Ingenuity

QuoteIt’s kind of an open-source victory, because we’re flying an open-source operating system and an open-source flight software framework and flying commercial parts that you can buy off the shelf

This is weirdly inspiring in a way. I worked a bit on building robots in college and it’s nice to know the only thing stopping them from being as cool as the stuff nasa builds is my severe lack of intelligence and not some secret technology.

Epic Games has acquired RAD Game Tools so they now own Bink video and more
8 January 2021 at 5:38 pm UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: DrMcCoy2) Bink (*) has several optimizations and block types to specifically support videos found in video games. Namely, hard edges you'll find in animated or 3D-rendered graphics. Other general video formats are tuned for real life video captured by a camera, where hard edges and wide stretches of the exact same color are scarce, but gradients and noise that needs to be filtered are frequent.

As someone who has done quite a bit of work with av1 that codec absolutely excels with 3d renders and animated content. Ofc it’s often limited by the source using yuv420p which makes it literally impossible to create sharp edges that change color, but overall it’s a good way to distribute video if you can be sure your users have a good enough cpu for it (like at least a 4 core ryzen or intel cpu).

Unity Technologies committed to supporting the Linux Editor for the Unity game engine

Even though I’m kinda cynical about Unity for various reasons I am very happy to see this. Getting tools on Linux is how we get way more games on Linux! Plus the preview/beta linux builds of unity have been super helpful to me in modding. Unity is a wonderful tool and official support is great
