Quoting: EhvisAll I can suggest for nvidia is to choose settings so that 99.9% of your frame times fall within the HMD refresh rate. Setting it to 80 Hz can help with that and is still plenty smooth. Otherwise you can reduce the rendering resolution (which defaults to 150%) or in-game settings. Second is to select legacy reprojection for the game (and all games).
Okay, I can try that. In my experience the resolution is more important than the refresh rate anyway. SteamVR Beta in Windows used to have stuttering as well, but I think they fixed that a while ago. SteamVR in Linux will probably get better with time. By the way, VR in Windows is not yet perfect yet either. Somehow restarting VR multiple times in one go is not very robust, regardless of the OS.

Been playing VirtuaVerse [External Link] from GOG [External Link].

Tested Half-Life: Alyx native, but my NVIDIA causes more stuttering in Linux than in our beloved Windows :). So I am hoping buying an AMD will solve that my next hardware upgrade.

By the way, shouldn't Steam list Half-Life: Alyx [External Link] as a Linux (Steam Play) game now?

Quoting: FaalhaasWhen I saw the mini-adventure Delores [External Link] came out I wanted to start it up (having finished Thimbleweed Park [External Link] natively on Linux before). To my amazement it has no Linux support at all. Can't even run it on Proton [External Link]. What's up with that? :O

They said they're testing their new engine with it and that they will bring the engine to Linux, too.

Yes, I indeed read it right after I tried to start Delores. I guess I was just a bit too spoiled to assume the mini-adventure would just work on the same platforms as Thimbleweed Park. :) Seemed like a no-brainer to me, hence my surprise.

Quoting: FaalhaasI am now downloading HL:A to test if it is playable natively.
Well, looks like it is. I just played HL:A natively on Linux. :)

Although, like in most VR games, Linux has a bit more stuttering in VR than in Windows overall. Might be performance related.
Valve does note that performance is not great on Nvidia hardware, like Liam says in the article.
Yes, he did. Lately, I am getting more and more convinced to go for an AMD card next upgrade, since I am both a Linux and a VR user. Looking forward to that AMD Big Navi or Navi 2x or RDNA 2 or whatever it is called. :)

Quoting: FaalhaasUnfortunately the last few months my Valve Index freezes my entire Linux system as soon as I hit that "VR" button in Steam.
I got a Steam client update popup this morning with "- Fixed hang on SteamVR startup." in the release notes [External Link]. Not relevant for me, but maybe for you?
Thank you very much. Since this release note relates to SteamVR Beta, I first switched to Beta. It first froze (again), but after a reboot it started working! I am now downloading HL:A to test if it is playable natively.

This motivated me to play VirtuaVerse [External Link]. If you are a fan of pixelated graphics and 80s retro style this is excellent. It literally is point-and-click meaning you have to use the mouse or your controller in that way. No movement with WASD-keys or joystick. When you point at something you have the option to look or talk, which somehow took me a while to figure out because I just clicked. :dizzy:

Puzzle can be hard, but everyone will probably get stuck somewhere different in the game (which is a good thing). And moreover, this is how a game should be released. Give the player the choice between GOG [External Link] and Steam [External Link], Linux and Windows, and DRM-free or evil. I rather pay for a game which supports this, then play a free game which doesn't. :)

Quoting: PatolaI bought the Valve Index because it's the only one which officially support Linux (besides being one of the best).
Same here. Unfortunately the last few months my Valve Index freezes my entire Linux system as soon as I hit that "VR" button in Steam. I remember this usedn't be the case. No problems in Windows though. Have to figure out which log file I have to post on which support site.

I wanted to test HL:A in Linux, but first have to fix this "niche within a niche" bug. Although VR is possible in Linux, it is this the main reason I have to constantly switch to Windows, which seems a bit old fashioned to me. :)

Not really. ProtonDB [External Link] mentions lag when turning with the mouse. Probably related to the refresh rate of the device. Makes it unplayable for me.

Maybe I should try Stadia. Then again... I am trying to opt out of Google. :)

Great tips lately, so thanks.

I do have to mention The Way [External Link] is -90% off on Steam, which makes it twice as cheap. ;)
