SteamVR 1.9 is out, Linux VR users may want to opt into a Beta

Quoting: MatomboI'm now owing a Valve index but i sadly must admit that steamvr for linux is still more or less a beta overall:
Camera not working
Audio not working without tinkering
Mic not working without tinkering
Reprojection is causing headdache inducing flickering
And the constant rumbling bug in the controllers (i guess that's what they are refering to the "rare" stuck haptics bug, which isn't quite so rare)

However, despite this I'm havin a blast playing Serious Sam and Talos Principle und other games using proton ^^.
Still considering to upgrade my rig and getting an Index in time for Alyx.

Did you give it a try under Windows?
If so - is it better there?
Jep only thing broken in windows so far is that you can't adjust the camera refresh rate.

But i only played around on windows for one and a half day, so no exhaustive report here.

Reprojection works on AMD gpu's with Radv , but not on Nvidia.

But yeah , other points are valid.
I am on an amd gpu vega 56 on latest drivers (don't know the version number but I'm using manjaro)
What is Radv?
Vulkan driver for AMD gpu's that lives in Mesa.

AMDVLK=! radv ( started by Red Hat people, mainly being developed by Valve these days)

AMDGPU-PRO= AMDVLK+prop compiler

Seems like Feral Interactive may have a few surprises for Linux in 2020

Some early first impressions of Google Stadia played on Linux

Quoting: michaldybczakHow did they make Destiny 2 run if protondb shows it as borked? Everyone says that Stadia is on Linux but it looks like there are only Linux servers. The game is somehow streamed from Windows or am I missing something?
If it's borked due to DRM or anticheats then it's not a problem for Stadia+Wine.
Stadia is a different Linux based platform which anti cheats or drm's are not necessary.

User can't modify/manipulate anything because user only interacts with a video stream. Not the game itself at all.

No , Stadia is not using Wine. There is no reason for it.

Set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2, Valve have now properly announced Half-Life: Alyx (updated)

Quoting: bubexelThis game will appear on linux. Other thing will be the performance. But it will show on linux.
Just guessing what could be a potential problem for Valve.
It's not just an announcement.
You can pre-order the game and pay real money.
That's why they feel pressured to put some systems requirements.
(Otherwise I'd say just leave it empty for now)

But judging from the specs of the Windows version,
the requirements for Linux will also be quite high.
While (I hate to say it) this won't be much of an issue
for Nvidia GPUs but the state of the current drivers for
the newer AMD Navi cards will have to improve over the next few month.
It might be that Valve didn't want to omit AMD just for a start
(they are stakeholders and contributing to the AMD Mesa driver, right?),
but also couldn't just yet definitely say it will work in March...(?)
Actually AMD gpu support for VR on Linux is better than Nvidia.

Nvidia doesn't support Async reprojection on Linux while RADV does.

Quoting: LeopardStadia means nothing for Linux since all of those games will have VLK renderers tailored specifially for AMDVLK with no intent to run them on desktop platforms which is dominated by Nvidia hardware. These games will be in the stores with D3D.
Well it remains to be seen what tailoring specifically for amdvlk means. If it means there are specific Vulkan extensions only in amdvlk, then perhaps. And perhaps it won't be tested much with other drivers. However, the games are being developed first on an actual GNU/Linux box. Multiple developers have said that is the first step to getting onto Stadia.

So while this may not translate into increased support for GNU/Linux desktop, I wouldn't say it "means nothing for Linux" (I'm an explicit person, so I'm going to assume you mean the desktop OS rather than the kernel). HLSL to SPIR-V (for example) basically got a big push from Google, for reasons of Stadia, and yet that helps on desktop too. Don't forget developer experience either. These may not directly translate to more games, but indirectly it helps reduce barriers and stabilise the experience for the end user.
Tailored for AMDVLK or Stadia means ; they are not being tested on NV gpu's.

I'm not expecting any Linux binaries of those games on Steam , GOG etc either. I'm saying we won't see those VLK renderers on PC in general. There will be d3d.

I meant desktop ofc :)

Stadia builds are no different than PS4 builds for example. One targeted api , one tested hardware combination which is able to give good performance even on the shittiest implementation.

I think this situation is slowly changing after AMD started to officially support Open Source drivers.
I was a NVIDIA guy a few years back, but now I'm pretty happy with AMD Radeon RX 590 :-)
I'm clearly talking about Windows. On Linux people have many reasons to use AMD but on Windows that is not the case.

Quoting: LeopardIf Unreal didn't fix their VLK renderer we might end up playing this on DXVK for getting good performance.

If anyone wants to try how bad is their VLK renderer , there is a demo of game Supraland on Steam. Simply run it natively first ( it is using VLK on Linux) and then go with Proton.
For trhe record, everspace native opengl performs about 20% better than everspace via proton and dxvk.
Tested that on a gtx 1060 and 1050ti
Supraland is another story.
So you cannot just take a game to represent the whole picture.
If you read carefully, i was talking about their VLK renderer( which isbthe default renderer on Linux now). UE4's d3d12 path is also fucked up , which lately represented in Borderlands 3. I hope they fix VLK and d3d12 renderers though.
