Steam Deck updates out for Stable and Beta, better Refresh Rate Switching

Quoting: slaapliedjeI did see a post on Reddit about the left trackpad feeling weaker on the haptics than on the right one. Sounds like it's intentional though.
With regard to the two trackpads, I can't see any difference on my device.

Quoting: slaapliedjeSo far I've fired up Neverwinter (which runs really fast and smooth) and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, which runs flawlessly. I haven't played much of Neverwinter, as it finished downloading very late last night and I need to figure out the controller layout for everything.
Performance-wise, the device has far exceeded my expectations so far. The performance of Nier:Automata, for example, is downright amazing. But are there also defects with your device or is everything perfect?

Quoting: slaapliedjeI did have to tweak the desktop mode so it actually had the right controller config to scroll, etc.
In desktop mode, the right trackpad goes to full haptic, but remains functionless. The left one does nothing. But this is certainly a software problem.

I have now received mine (512GB). Basically, an absolutely great device.

BUT:

  • Left trigger becomes a little mushy (maybe rubbing against something), at about an input value of 28000 (full press is 32767).

  • The high-pitched whistle. Oh, yes, I can hear it!

  • The unit does not lie flat when placed on a table (tested with three tables). It wobbles diagonally from top left to bottom right. If you put a twice-folded sheet of 80g DIN-A4 paper underneath, it disappears. Without this, in some environments (e.g. on a moving train) the DECK will constantly wobble when placed on the table in front of you.

  • If you grip it around the middle, e.g. to carry it somewhere, it creaks a little (middle bottom).

I have now read many posts where people have reported such and other smaller but quite relevant problems. I know of one case where someone RMAed their unit three times, only to receive a defective unit each time. Some problems can be solved by doing it yourself. But this is not always possible and is risky anyway. Some have destroyed their DECK with it.

Have any of you had such experiences and how do you deal with them?

Such things also happen regularly under Windows. It's just that all hell immediately boils over. It takes a little longer to hear the desperate cries of the penguins. Still.

Steam Deck Verified has issues, Grand Theft Auto V edition

Quoting: syylkThink of the Launchers as that library that binds together your SteamID and the Developer/Publisher user ID.
That's right, just a launcher shouldn't be an anti-compatibility layer. The launchers also run on the consoles. But in such a way that you don't notice them.

Valve will certainly improve this, but it will be difficult to reach the level of other consoles without the cooperation of the publishers. Imagine if the Rockstar launcher opened on Playstation without any customisation for the device. And Sony would have to try to make it all work somehow.

When will there be enough Linux users for the publishers to take better care of this? I hope that in a few years every second PC gamer will have a Steam deck. Then there would finally be a standard. Many of the problems also exist under Windows. Installing Windows on the Steam Deck almost makes everything worse when I look at Linus' video.

The simple fact is that publishers expect PC gamers to throw their hardware and free time at their crappy ports. Actually, that has always been the case.

Bungie has more to say on Destiny 2 for Steam Deck and it's still a no

I don't understand how an unsupported platform can be a threat to the community. If someone accidentally launches Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck, which can happen very easily, will their account be banned?

Valve should lock Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck so you can't even launch it. It's legitimate if Bungie wants to fend off threats, but they should refrain from threatening the community on their part. The Steam Deck is also aimed at completely unsuspecting people. It is an end-user system.

The best mobile game that isn't on mobiles. Until now. :)

Can't wait to get my Steam Deck.

The Steam Deck has released, here's my initial review

In the CP 2077 video, I notice slight stuttering. Does this come from the recording or is this also noticeable during normal playing (without recording)? Maybe Liam can say something about that.

Feral Interactive have no plans to update their Linux ports for Steam Deck

I am not surprised. Considering the fact that Feral's games are already very good ports, it would probably mean an enormous amount of work to rework all these games, some of them fundamentally. With most games, it's hard to say which version is better. To be honest, I wouldn't want to be in the tester's shoes.

Furthermore, I think it simply doesn't make them any money. They don't get their bread for free either.

It was the Feral port of Alien: Isolation that brought me back to normal gaming. I am grateful to them for that to this day.

What a bizzare luxury. We used to be happy about every port, now we discuss the versions.

520 games are now rated either Verified or Playable for Steam Deck

Quoting: EikeI wonder why so much of your library already has got a tag.
These are my numbers:
VERIFIED: 12 games (3.41%)
PLAYABLE: 8 games (2.27%)
UNSUPPORTED: 1 games (0.28%) (That's Insurgency.)
UNKNOWN: 331 games (94.03%)
Somewhat better but also not good:
VERIFIED: 35 games (12.28%)
PLAYABLE: 26 games (9.12%)
UNSUPPORTED: 1 games (0.35%)
UNKNOWN: 223 games (78.25%)

With Insurgency being unsupported. Shame.

Most are unknown. Most native Linux games. And among them also Valves own games: Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike, Portal (1) and Artifact. Dota2 probably too, but I don't have it in my library.
