Epic Games announce full Easy Anti-Cheat support for Linux including Wine & Proton

The greatest news since the release of Proton.

I don't really have the need myself, but the AC problem is holding Linux back as a gaming platform overall.

I think we are finally getting past the chicken/egg problem. Linux may not be a system for 99% of gamers. But it certainly appeals to more people than just 1%. If you want to be in control of your PC, go with Linux!

Quoting: subIf they have an internal build with DRM & Anticheat than they should get it out for alpha/beta testing soon, imho. It's mid September already. Better test that stuff in the field.
I have a really bad feeling about reception of the Deck.

That might not be so easy with this voodoo AC stuff. We already know that Rust (EAC) is very likely to run. But guaranteed only for the Deck. Normal Linux PCs are officially left out.

I always think about how the Steam Deck will be received by children and teenagers. I think it's going to be a bomb there if it's noticed. They don't even know what a PC is anymore. But all the Linux PCs I've given away so far have been loved by the kids. And those were often old used desktop machines.

I might give a Steam Deck to my niece. She currently uses an older Linux laptop. She mainly plays Minecraft with it. She could play my library on the Steam Deck via Family Share. And she can play Minecraft with it anyway.

This device already has so many options that are so easy to use. The Steam Deck is actually the perfect PC for today's youngsters. I don't know if I'll use it that often. But it is a very interesting device for children and teenagers. And the money is well spent, because the children also own a PC. The only thing missing is the docking station and a screen.

Quoting: MohandevirOk. If I get it right, the module could be installed with the Steam runtime(?) for the specific game? I mean included into the game's specific "container system" that Valve is starting to implement?

If Valve solves the AC problem with a kernel module (we don't know), this would be effective for all containers. The Valve Soldier containers with the Steam runtime are based on Linux Namespaces and thus all share the same host system kernel.

It is also possible that Valve solves this in a completely different way. We just don't know. But I don't see why they shouldn't be able to solve it.

If it goes in the direction of TPM, it will probably only work with Steam Decks. At least for now. Whether normal Linux clients will also be allowed to participate at some point could vary from publisher to publisher.

But I think it's impossible that the publishers lock Valve out. They will work with them. Just like with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.

And the Media Foundation will either be reimplemented or licensed from Microsoft. For reasons of antitrust law, certainly at reasonable conditions.

A stupid question: If I want to play Zelda on it, where do I get the game from?

s&box from Facepunch 'works great' on the Steam Deck but no native Linux plans

Installing Windows on it will hardly make it better. With a bit of luck, AMD and Valve will have the drivers for Windows 11 ready by December. But I wouldn't expect a leap in performance from this alternative. W11 doesn't even officially support devices with screens smaller than 9 inches. To make a long story short: The Steam Deck supports Windows so that Valve can tick the "It's a PC" checkbox.

If Microsoft allowed Windows to replace the Xbox's system software, it almost certainly wouldn't give the games a performance boost on the Xbox either.

Box86 helps to run the Stardew Valley installer. The game then runs perfectly on the Pi 400 thanks to Mono. Tested with the GOG version of Stardew Valley version.

Do you know of any other commercial games that run well on the Pi 400 without much effort?

Wow, Richard Garfield was involved. Reminds me of Artifact. I just played it again yesterday after a long time. Still can't understand why it has so few fans.

From Ethan's write-up:

Does this refer to the Steam Deck? What is the connection?

I look forward to all the improvements KDE Plasma will get with the Steam Deck

I wonder if the whole system is already based on Wayland?

How do the games cope with it? Are they all already running in Soldier containers on the Steam Deck?

It's starting to show that SteamOS 3.0 is not open source (yet).

Quoting: LinasI wonder if they are ever going to officially support Media Foundation? There are so many games that work just fine, except missing video playback.

True. Could be a license problem.
