GOG.com Don't Plan On Introducing Linux Support In The Foreseeable Future UPDATED

Quoting: Heya, meWindows XP
Windows XP Sp1+
Windows Vista
Windows Seven
Windows Eight (the "f*uck you online game vendor: we stuff everyone in our market";)
Did you see recent news about Windows 10? It's totally cloud based. Anyway i don't really have anything to add, they can do what they want. @PopeJamal Childish is what happens on Windows forums, and quite frankly, ANY forum about ANY topic.

@Hamish I agree that I would rather have an un-hacked version of the games. Let's be serious here, that's what GOG does, they hack the games to make them work. Sometimes that's the only way if the Company was disbanded and the source is gone.

This is still terrible PR. They could just support Ubuntu like Steam does, This is just an excuse. If they want to support everything, why not add ReactOS and BSD into the mix -- freedom right!. Bah humbug. I REALLY don't think Linux users would mind not having support for other Distros; they are smart enough to get help from a community to get it running on their distro. It's all about the Community here, that's where most of us get support and that's how Steam made it on other distros. So you guys at GOG can stop with the rationalized excuses to not sell games for Linux.

Yeah it's just a standard, ignorant response. They could easily choose ONE platform like Steam has done (Ubuntu) but they just want to be a-holes is all.

I don't think we need them anyway. Most of those old games work just fine in DosBox and Wine. It's mostly newer things that have issues until they're worked out.

0 A.D. Real Time Strategy Alpha 14 Released & New Crowdfunding Campaign
5 Sep 2013 at 1:29 pm UTC

I was just thinking the other day, these guys should just do a Crowd Funding and go ahead and finish the game. I mean otherwise, development probably would've dragged on for many more years. I hope they make goal.

It is a bit sad though, that to get anything done in Open Source anymore, crowd Funding has become almost a must. Of course that still doesn't guarantee a finished product.

Time To Go Postal, Free Postal 2 DLC On Its Way
3 Sep 2013 at 5:51 pm UTC

I've had P2 Complete for about five months now. Like adolson, I just haven't made time to play it. In all honesty I'm overwhelmed and knee deep in Games I've bought for Linux. Regardless of what people say, there are plenty of Games for Linux and not enough time to play. :'(

I thought I might gift a copy to my brother while it's on sale. Even though he is overwhelmed with Games also. Between Desura and Steam, I dunno what the hell people are complaining about when they say there are no Games. I mean really, Hardcore Gamers don't make but a small % of the market; the rest would be fine with their Phones or switching to Linux.

That's why I say, for most, Windows is simply a crutch that gets rationalized into usage. Hey! thanks for the Linux support Running with Scissors! =) I might be motivated enough to play it today with my brother ;)

I think the best thing is, next years Steam Summer Sale should be flavorful with all the new titles coming out!. Hope you guys at RWS have some new stuff for us by then :P

Steam's August Hardware Survey, Linux Dips Below 1%
2 Sep 2013 at 1:40 pm UTC

It's been stated that this survey doesn't really portray any actual amount of users. Obviously Games are being sold, or we wouldn't be having so many being released by the same companies  . Look at this, who is to say they numbers aren't erroneous as in past instances?. I take the Steam Hardware Survey with a grain of salt. When the Games stop, then you worry.

@Angas: you probably should have installed PlayOnLinux [External Link] and installed it via that program for compatibility. Otherwise, have a look at the WineDB [External Link] to see if thats of any help.

Also: Sound Issues [External Link] under Ubuntu 12.04 may help.

The Cheapskate's Corner 16 (Aug 29th - Sep 4th)

Have you guys noticed, the Blue Linux support on the Humble Pie chart is almost nonexistent now since their recent EA debacle. I think that's something to be noted, that Linux users are ticked off.

Eador. Masters of the Broken World Will Still Come To Linux

Devs could save a lot of trouble if they made their Games multi-platform to begin with; instead of using a DirectX lock-in. It's 2013 people, don't lock yourself into proprietary APIs. Speaking in general of course and even with OpenGL, some work has to be done; but a hell of a lot less than DX. Not to mention DX 11.1 is a Win8 only lock-in, heh it even locks out older versions of Windows.

If you all remember, DX9 worked across a variety of Windows OS's, including '98. In an effort to push it's DX API, I think with DX 10, MS decided to strip down it's support for OpenGL in order to push their lock-in API and lock out previous Windows platforms in order to do their signature forced upgrade on consumers.

And that was with Bill Gates, the strategy continued with Ballmer and I see no reason for it to change with a new guy/gal. In fact, I hear a Nokia guy will lead Microsoft -- the same guy that ran Nokia into the ground. If so, that's fantastic news for Multi-platform and Linux.

TL;DR: Don't lock yourself into Microsoft's proprietary API.
