It's nostalgia for some part. People like to play something that looks familiar. Like eating what you ate as a kid , or re-watching a TV show from when you were younger. Hell , I spent one weekend on call wathing old reruns of Scooby Doo.

On the other hand graphics eat a lot of dev costs. If they don't have experience in 3D engines or want to save costs by making the game pixelated it can be convenient. Budget friendly too.

While I'm fine with desert levels, in my memory BFE (the only Serious Sam game I've ever played) consisted solely of desert levels.

The first game , Serious Sam first encounter was all set in Egypt. So sand and pyramids all the way. There was some variety with gardens , pools etc , but sand it was.
The second game , Serious Sam second encounter was set in parts of South America but there was variety with temples, caves and jungles.
Serious Sam II had a variety of environments.

Hmm , a more polished , less pixelated version.
Fair enough , with enough artists that seems doable.
If the game logic stays roughly the same they can pull it off.

Unfortunately, the late game was apparently pretty boring. And it wasn't even something that could be fixed by loot boxes.

The bigger problem was multiplayer IMO
You grind for a week to level up your orks.
Some schmuck buys lootcrates for 20$ and gets high level orks.
His orks win , yours are dead for good. Have fun grinding more.
(that's at least how i understood it)
