Game porter Ethan Lee offers services to maintain old games for developers

I'd be happy to throw some money his way, but he only accepts donations through GitHub sadly. I'll always love the guy for Salt and Sanctuary, but not enough to make a Microsoft account.

Half-Life Alyx NoVR mod to get a huge upgrade in October

Quoting: TimeFreezeAnd thanks to the mod i have already experienced the game and its glorious.
At the risk of repeating all the arguments from the first article on this, I think the argument here is that if you've only played this mod, then you really haven't "experienced" it. You're missing the panic of not being to reload your gun as a zombie slowly shuffles towards you. Or the terror when the lights go out and only your torch can light up the attacking spiders, but it's attached to your gun and your hands are shaking, making it impossible to aim. Or the sheer physical presence of Jeff.

Everything is so much more manageable when it's not VR.

But, yep, it's a great story, with some great moments, even if you miss out on the visceral nature of experiencing them in VR.

Cos, your right, it's a CRAZY amount of money to spend if you're not completely blown away by the idea of it.

Here's the most popular Steam Deck games for August 2023

I think they're talking about the game, "Blasphemous"...?

SteamWorld Build arrives December 1st with full Steam Deck support

Got them all too, but won't be buying this one, as the genre holds zero appeal to me. But hey, if that's reflected as poorer sales due to lack of Linux support, then that's fine by me!

This is clearly not true and I wish people would stop saying it.
I was expecting something like this to happen with Proton & the Deck, for reasons that seemed to me good and sufficient. But it didn't, and I have adjusted my ideas to reality. Some people seem to be just assuming that their ideas about it must have happened and so they don't need to check.
Yep, Liam posted some numbers on the Discord a while back. There was a slight dip during the year Proton was announced, but thereafter, native-Linux numbers have bounced back to the 1000+/annum rate they were before Proton and continue to rise year on year.

Edit:
Found the numbers from Discord, and stuck them into a spreadsheet.

So although there's a general percentage decline, it's both negligible, and mainly due to the steep rise in Windows titles, not a decline in the number of native Linux titles.

Daggerfall Unity adds exclusive in-game books by the original lead designer

Fond memories of playing Daggerfall and getting absolutely nowhere in it! I might give it another go and see how much nothing I can achieve second time around!

That's a massive shame. I admit that I've had Shadow Tactics on my wishlist for years now. I like the sound of the gameplay, but don't really like the setting (ancient Japan, or whatever). And I swear I'm not making this up, but I honestly can't stand Wild West themed stuff either. If Red Dead Redemption isn't going to break that dislike, I guess Desperados was on a beating to nothing.

Give me fantasy or sci-fi any day.

Linux kernel 6.5 released

Those Xbox controller updates for rumble reminded me that I probably should pair my ancient Dualsense controller to my PS5 at some point, before using it again as my main controller on my PC. Unless I'm missing a way to update its firmware straight from Linux? Anyone know?

I only have one odd quirk with it though, tbh, which is that `dualsensectl` reports the battery as 100% when it's charging, instead of its actual value. I have to unplug the controller to get a valid result. Hardly a game-changer, but it would be nice to fix.

Epic Games' new exclusive deal gives devs 100% for 6 months

They're definitely competing. It's weird to argue otherwise. They're selling games on a digital storefront in direct competition to Valve, Microsoft, or GOG.

Gamers just don't like how they're going about competing. Devs are a bit more supportive though - that guaranteed money is extremely helpful to a start up, or small indie.

Me? I didn't even make an account on Epic - I didn't want to contribute a single statistic to their shitty marketing engine. And although I know it's not fair, I view negatively any game that made an exclusivity deal with Epic, even when it lands on Steam - I might still pick such games up, but usually only on sale, or in a bundle, such as the Outer Wilds. I'm petty that way, but I just can't help it. It's literally how much I despise Epic as an entity, and Sweeney as a person.

Darwinia from Introversion Software gets a big compatibility upgrade

This was one of the first games that really blew my mind that I was playing it on Linux. Not just novelty either - it's actually superb fun, and I'm not even particularly into RTS style games.

The other big game was Revenge of the Titans, by PuppyGames, which reminds me that they have a big release coming up, Battledroid, which I've not heard a peep about in ages!! It was last covered on GOL back in January 2020. Although that was followed up a few months later by this article which covers how Basingstoke financially crippled them.

Hopefully it's still baking. An MMO is a bit of a step away from their usual shooters.
