Steam's September Hardware Survey, Linux Holds Steady

Quoting: Quote from Snevmaybe it was 5, either way I have gotten it many times. I did submit the wine survey as well because steam surveys do show that you are using wine and not windows, so I was hoping that valve and other devs would see that a non windows user is interested in playing their games. Since I submitted many linux surveys I figured that it couldnt hurt. Had I gotten it in windows I would have rejected it. I wonder what the criteria is for selection? I do own about 700 games, not sure if that matters or not. I also sign in almost daily.Quoting: Quote from philip550cjust got the survey today. Ive gotten it about 6 times in linux now and once in wine. Never in windows or mac, I do use all three but Im mainly in linux. So weird you got it 6 times while most of have never :o

Quoting: Quote from HamishI didnt mean that it was his fault. Also I wasnt aware that there was a greenlight for dirk when I wrote that, although I edited my post to include that once I found out. Greenlight obviously needs revision and policy changes.Quoting: Quote from philip550cI know that drm haters wont agree but I think a major reason for lack of sales is not being on steam. I would love to see dirk dashing in my steam linux games list. While I do not want to sidetrack this thread from being about people giving Troy the best wishes he deserves, I do have to respond to this, as the whole Greenlight campaign for Dirk Dashing 2 was one of the greatest indictments of Steam from a developers perspective I have seen in a long time (although what happened with Paranautical Activity is also up there). The amount of trolls that campaign got was disgraceful, and I would wager that it did not do Troy's health any favours.
So I would say it is Steam's fault for not having him, and not Troy's fault for not getting on Steam.

This is not good news. I will be purchasing some games to support you. Will your games still be available to purchase even after you shutdown or will the site be taken offline? Seems like you could still get some income by leaving it running and selling the games until OS changes prevent the games from running. I hope your health returns as well. I know that drm haters wont agree but I think a major reason for lack of sales is not being on steam. I would love to see dirk dashing in my steam linux games list.
EDIT: Just noticed that this game is on steam greenlight. I just voted for it, will that be removed when you shutdown? Also I have to say that pistol sound is doom for sure. In case you didn’t notice from my avatar, I am an avid doom fan, hands down my favourite game ever, been playing weekly since 1993, if I had to choose doom or every other game ever made I would choose doom. I closed my eyes and waited for the sound in your trailer video, the people you bought the sound from had to have taken it from doom or the same source doom got it from. To be honest it makes me want to play it more lol.

Quoting: NoYzEPersonally i hate consoles, because it is NOT good for PC gaming to have consoles at all!but big picture mode works with mouse and keyboard and game controllers, and I even had it working with the kinect.
What we have now for some time is, that the lead development platform are consoles and if the PC gamers get a port (if!), the controls feel very spongy, because they were originally designed for game-pads.
Heck, even ego-shooters like call of duty are designed for consoles...game-pad rather than mouse and keyboard!
The controls of Skyrim are very unresponsive due to this.
That is really sad.
With this move, Valve pushed it in the wrong direction.
Big-Picture is designed for game-pads.
If the steam-box runs well and developers start to develop for SteamOS, it will be designed for.....game-pads!
Like windows said before, they want to kill mouse and keyboard in the future!
Windows 8 is all about touch.
Android is all about touch. (Many mobile games "for Linux" but not playable on Linux desktop.)
Windows 9 (probably), X-box one and Microsoft smartphones are gonna be (all about) voice.
Google glass...Virtual Reality (Oculus Rift)...Smartphone invasion...Tablets...mobile gaming...even Ubuntu is going for mobile devices and every company wants unified Surfaces...but this does mean, that the PC is going to get just an other "one touch primitive dumbass monkeysafe entertaining platform"
It started a few years ago...they started to hide the Menu bar, they proceeded to hide menus and now they go on and limit even the menus to as few choices possible so that even a grandma of your choice can use their devices.
I do not say it's bad if things are simple enough to be accessed by a good amount of people without computer knowledge, but they limit it to just that.
They assume you to be a stupid user and they don't give you the choice.
Do windows 8 let you choose (initially) to use the Desktop instead of metro? no!
And i assume, that SteamOS doesn't let you choose to use mouse and keyboard, it will most likely start in big picture mode and won't let you change to an desktop environment just like chromeOS.
I came to Linux to have the choice again...
And i want to use mouse and keyboard for gaming and working, no touch, no voice, no telekinesis (well that might be actually cool), just my mouse and my keyboard.
And i want my PC do what i want, not what Microsoft or any other company wants my PC to do.
And i don't want to see Google (and Valve maybe) take Linux, make it portable, shut it down and generate content (like the mobile games) that is not accessible with desktop Linux.
If that is to become true, Linux might become just the new "Mobile OS", totally incompatible with Desktop Linux and everyone hypes Linux for it's mobile capacities and development shifts into mobile market...and...so...on...
Just imagine Linux is running on "Xbox two" and "Playstation 5" incompatible with desktop Linux.
They just "use" "our" Linux and don't even give us back something in return.
We still can't play the games we want on Desktop Linux, because it is still not an option for the companies because only 1% gamers use Desktop Linux and 99% of all Linux users use a Linux console.
It's the same "no-control" environment, completely closed-source.
No Terminal, no choices, an imprisoned Linux.
Think about it.

I think being worried about this is like being worried that XBMCbuntu is going to kill off ubuntu. All they have done is created another ubuntu based linux distro to install on hardware by consumers and manufacturers to ensure that steam can become a viable console, in addition to desktop gaming and later mobile gaming. I think they just want steam to be available everywhere and on everything. If you watch any of the modern steam/valve talks that seems to be what Gabe says over and over. I have zero worries about this but I do understand the concern. Today is the first day though that Ive been a little concerned though about mir. Valve's distro is based off of 12.04 though so at least they will have a few years to figure that out.

Quoting: adolsonThey do have plans for TV as well. http://www.ubuntu.com/tv [External Link]Quoting: Quote from SabunDesktop? You mean television, right? Ubuntu isn't aggressively targeting the TV last I checked.Quoting: Quote from QuoteCould this be dangerous for the desktop Linux client? To me it sounds like another Linux distro, except it's aiming for the desktop aggressively (like Ubuntu) and has financial backing from Valve. I'm actually pretty excited to try it out once it's downloadable.

For streaming its likely something like how the NVIDIA shield streams through the geforce experience, something built into the steam client that just sends compressed video out and sends control signals.
Did anybody else get excited when they heard this? "Hundreds of great games are already running natively on SteamOS. Watch for announcements in the coming weeks about all the AAA titles coming natively to SteamOS in 2014. Access the full Steam catalog of over nearly 3000 games and desktop software titles via in-home streaming."
Says all the AAA titles coming NATIVELY to SteamOS. Were going to get suprised soon, lots of AAA titles. Metro Last Light is just the beginning. Because of the little hints being dropped since march, I would not be suprised to see InfinityWard's Call of Duty game.

I will try to promote the steambox, but Ive been using a steambox in my living room for about 2 years now. I have a computer that looks like stereo equipment and matches my home theater (most people dont even notice that its a computer) and Ive been running steam big picture mode on it since it came out. i do have wireless xbox controllers for my console friends but I prefer to use a wireless gaming keyboard and mouse. I sit on my couch and then use something like this http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/bizchair1_2275_2294275068 [External Link] for the keyboard and mouse and its very comfortable.

I wish kickstarter followed Indiegogo's lead and allowed you to put the money up on the spot. Oh well, guess I'll just have to set a reminder.I don't understand -- a reminder for what? To keep some money in your account for when the pledge actually gets charged, a little after the campaign closes?
