NVIDIA 495.44 stable driver is out for Linux, adds in GBM API support

There is no gray area, their strategy from the beginning was to use a solution that adapted well to their driver needs not caring on anyone else. And as I said, this is not an isolated case, it is just the way they do everything: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Nouveau-XDC2017 [External Link]
There is no way we can soft their behavior of all this years. They are simply bully jerks...

Quoting: 3zekielAs for whether they messed around for 5 years, they did propose the better API, but as far as I saw, no one really came and discussed either ... Or maybe it happened behind curtains. Once again reality is a bit more gray than black or white ... And once again, of course, they acted a bit like divas who expect all attention even when coming late to the party. This is not only about technical decisions, this is more of an attitude problem with our community. You cannot expect that the community would drop their work on GBM to move to your new "standard" because you failed with your personal endeavor with EGLStreams.
Of course, at the very end, the conclusion is that technically their solution does not work as it should, but I was more saying it was not as easy to detemine at the begining. And as always, once a project has taken a certain path, it is often hard to backtract. You need to have the clarity to take a break and look back.
My opinion is that they just had some technical bad choice and perseverated by lack of clarity more than by evil-ness.

Lets stop playing dumb. Nvidia pushed for EGLStream against GBM for many years. They only changed their mind after completely failing to make it work. Simple as that.

Quoting: scaineI have no idea what you're talking about here. Nvidia blocked something... how? Or is this tired old "Mir" argument, in which I'm sick of hearing it, since, after all, competing standards literally defines what Linux is.Seems that you never read the story of Nouveau driver in all this years, don't you? If you know of an alternative, let us know, as in the current scenario many Nvidia users won't be able to use wayland unless they upgrade their hardware.
No idea how you block open source alternatives though. Is this about that Microsoft-funded company that brought lawsuits to big Linux houses with bogus patents? I forget their name.
Yeah, sorry. No idea what this is about.

Quoting: scaineKinda difficult to implement new defaults when the industry jerk makes lobby for their own problematic solution and blocks the development of any open source alternative.Quoting: BielFPsAnd I would like to welcome the Nvidia users friends to the wayland side of the force :smile:You say that like everyone else has adopted it, and it's the new standard...? As far as I know Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and OpenSuse do now default to Wayland, but it's not like it's used everywhere by any stretch. I'm on Pop 21.04 and there's no Wayland here. And don't KDE still have a few kinks to work out with Wayland?
I hope now the Linux Mint devs can stop pretending that Wayland is not a thing.
It feels like the technology that's permanently "just around the corner". I just wish it had some kind of selling point - something that made me want to try it, other than vague "better architecture" back-end stuff that I'm meant to care about, but don't, on my single-user system. Instead, there's a list of quirks relating to screen sharing, keyboard overlays, proprietary apps and Nvidia or KDE incompatibilities.
It does feel like there's some momentum at long last though.

Valve banning games that allow exchanging cryptocurrencies or NFTs

Quoting: SamsaiWouldn't it then be easier to demand that games allow you to refund your in-game currency, instead of trying to do some weird manoeuvre where you first have to convert real money into a cryptobro Monopoly money and then you can take your Monopoly tokens and cash them out at a wildly different rate back to human currency? The in-game currency you can always peg to the user's currency, after all.Allowing an easily conversion would create a big market of people exploiting the game economy in order to get real world money. Looking at how things are right now, that movement would generate a worst user experience and a very dangerous place for any sub-18 user.

Quoting: SamsaiDepending on the game, normally in-game/in-platform currency cannot be converted back to real world money. IMO, that's what they are fighting here. A valid discussion would be on why they don't do something against the many bots in Steam that allows the operation of external sites that do convert in-platform items into real world money.Quoting: superboybotCrypto-based transactions are more complicated. I think that games that allow both buying and selling crypto-assets will descend into Coinbase with pretty graphics. However, simply using crypto as a transactional currency to purchase in-game items should be allowed. The only counterpoint I can think of is that regular people do not understand crypto enough to treat it responsibly. I believe there is some truth to that, but I can see this becoming less and less of a factor in the next year or two. This is just in-game currency with more steps.

Quoting: Guest...and suddenly my addiction to little plastic models appears to be a cheap hobby by comparison. With the current state of the market, paying for a PC just for gaming is almost stupid. If you just want to play new games, it's 100% better inversion to go for the PS5/xbox.
You're not cynical, you're realistic. All of this trouble with GPUs is behind me constantly pushing back any kind of remote idea of getting an upgraded system. I'm starting to wonder when it will impact the games - they'll realise nobody has the kind of system that can run what they want and will have to adjust requirements accordingly. Or just push it out on a streaming service and leave desktop systems out of it entirely.

So they remove this game because it requires an online connection to play some missions but they will still have other games that you can only play multiplayer if and only if you have galaxy client. They can apologize all what they want but this smells more like a PR damage control.

As Liam mentioned, you can run anything you want from your file browser if you know how to do it (in many will require a right click) but keep in mind that most of the instructions you will find are terminal focused. So, the instruction I shared with you implies opening a terminal on the directory where you extracted the game and execute the installation script.

Quoting: heidi.wengerOk i try to remember  i was just wondering why is that snap package not on that main site where the article linked? But only this tar.xz thing?? Which i couldnt do anything with :dizzy:They publish the a tar file because is the easiest way to deliver the game for all linux platforms (as long as they have tar and xz installed... which is almost an axiom).

Quoting: heidi.wengerOk i go to the downloads page and click Linux and it downloads SuperTuxKart-1.3-linux-64bit.tar.xz. But when i click that, the installation won't start: all files just show on Engrampa Archive Manager.https://supertuxkart.net/Download [External Link]
But on Windows section it downloads SuperTuxKart-1.3-installer-x86_64.exe and i can install with a click.
So how to install on Linux with a click?
Extract and run run_game.sh inside.
