Canonical going 'all in' on gaming for Ubuntu, new Steam Snap package in testing
30 Apr 2022 at 3:52 am UTC

looks like my switch from Ubuntu to Fedora was very VERY timely! :D

Recently had a heap of dramas trying to get Alderon Game Launcher to "launch" as both Snap and AppImage - on Fedora 35 (I might wait a few updates before going to Fedora 36).

Finally managed to get the AppImage one to run by simply adding "--no-sandbox"... Goodbye SNAP!

Just been trying out Fedora 35 just lately, with plans to go 36 when it's a bit more mature...

Nearly jumped back to Ubuntu when I couldn't even get the Alderon Games Launcher to run on Fedora 35 (neither the snap nor the appimage). Tried using Lutris script, but that's got a hardcoded URL (dead link) to an older version of the launcher and I couldn't be arsed trying to edit it and make Lutris use the edited version...

So - I tried firing up the AppImage version of the launcher, and saw an error about "GPU process isn't usable" googled that and found the "--no-sandbox option" - and that worked!

So now I've got a *.desktop file that looks like this :
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Alderon Games Launcher
Exec=/home/x/sbin/AlderonGamesLauncher-1.1.69.AppImage --no-sandbox
Icon=/home/x/sbin/AlderonGamesTitans.png
Terminal=false
# Encoding=UTF-8
Terminal=false
Type=Application
StartupWMClass=Alderon Games Launcher
Comment=The Alderon Games launcher
Categories=Game;
MimeType=text/html;x-scheme-handler/alderon-games;

I assume an NVidia RTX is required for any realtime ray tracing?

Loved this game - except for the "let's get some humans here..." bit... I could colony build forever...

That bit bores me, and I don't care what happens to the humans, I don't care if they're bored - I wish the game had "evil genius" mode where I get to gas or space them all for being disobedient :D ... don't preach at me, they're not people... it's a game...

I might have to check out some of the DLC...

I'm now a true convert after using a Vertical Mouse
5 Aug 2021 at 2:08 am UTC Likes: 3

I've got a wired Evoluent vertical mouse somewhere - left handed too - but the rubbery "coating" started perishing, so I gave up using it, but I've since learned that a coating of talcum powder fixes this - but do you think I can find that Evoluent mouse anywhwere? It's boxed up somewhere, probably under a pile of other junk...

Anyway - my facebook feed gets plastered with ads for "ergonomic" vertical mouses constantly - but - THEY NEVER have left handed models, it's hardly "ergonomic" to force me to use my right hand - or worse - force me to use a right handed vertical mouse, with my left hand!

The main reason I wanted to break out that Evoluent mouse was that in FPS games - it feels much more like holding a gun than a flat mouse does...

I prefer bluetooth, or wired, I'm constantly losing those 2.4 dongles, or mixing them up...

I did... Doh!

Crap... BD3 on Linux via Stadia?

But still not enough to make me subscribe to a VPN service, and thanks again to the NBN for my sh!tty VDSL / NBN hybrid (mongrel bastard more like it) broadband connection - thanks Turnbull + Abbott (I'm paying for 50mpbs and lucky to get 28mpbs so no point subscribing to a 100 mbit plan).

Raspberry Pi OS has a big new release out switching to PulseAudio

I've got 3 x Pi4 (1 x 4Gb, 2 x 8Gb)

Bought the 4 GB model last year when they were first announced but was disappointed in the lack of 64 bit choices so I barely used it...
Then they released a 64 bit buster - and I tried it on a "headless" RPi3 (running PiHole and OpenVPN) for a couple months... then I dd'd that image onto a Samsung T5 SSD and booted it from the Pi4 (4GB) - so my headless Pi4 4GB model is now running PiHole and OpenVPN.

I'm still running 32 bit Buster on the 2 x 8 GB models - why? Well there's no 64 bit ARM steamlink app, and also I use Citrix and there's no 64 bit ARM Citrix client - and this is purely anecdotal, but performance on 32 bit seems slightly snappier, e.g. things like Chromium...

Tried Ubuntu and even elementary (arm74) - but prefer Debian buster (and the Ubuntu images for aarch64 / arm64 are also still running older 4.x kernels).

Performance booting from USB3 is so much better than SD card, I don't boot off SD-card anymore...
