The Linux distribution I was most thankful for in 2020 - EndeavourOS

Quoting: theghostI really liked and used Antergos a long time. I would really like to use EndeavorOS as successor but unfortunately they replaced the installer of Antergos with Calamares. But Calamares offers no option to encrypt your hard drive in combination with an unencrypted boot. The only two distributions which offer this are Ubuntu and Fedora. So I will stick with them.
you can do that with manjaro-architect, too (which is exactly what i've done ^^)

Portal 2: Desolation standalone mod gets a first proper teaser, coming to Linux

i agree that MEL was a really great experience :D
And if nothing changed (i played it before there were different modes), the puzzles are really nice food for thought and satisfying once you finally solve them ^^

If this mod comes close to that, i'll be really happy

War Thunder gets a huge upgrade along with Vulkan by default on Linux (updated)

[quote=Cecco_d_Ascoli][quote=Termy]
Quoting: KorhakaSame issue here, yet got it fixed.

When running WarThunder native (without Steam) under Kubuntu or other distros, the window manager doesn't succeed in selecting the Vulkan-window as the active foreground window.

I found the solution here in the WT forum, cf. below TheRiddick, Oct. 26 [External Link]

Hence I run

killall kwin_x11
(and optionally) xrandr --output DP-0 --gamma 0.92

before starting WT via the "launcher" file in //media/USERNAME/DRIVE/WarThunder/linux64

The difference is quite impressive, with OpenGL I got 30-40 fps (20 when flying over towns) on medium settings, now I get 60-70 fps (40-50 over towns) on high with most sliders set to the max.
yeah i know about that - but i don't really want to kill my session to play a game. I've pretty much given up on WT, and for the occasional AB i use proton which gives me 4-5 times the FPS on max compared to openGL on min details...

So still the same issues with vulkan that have been there for years now - and they just declared it to "stable".
Especially the black screen issue was there since the first time you could try out the vulkan renderer...
On the one hand it's good they support linux at all, on the other hand, the native client is in a sorry state for several years and seems to be treated as a second class...who am i kidding - seventeenth class citizen ever since :/

It worked well with proton, but since EAC got introduced thats no longer an option for realistic and simulator battles...

Quoting: Termyi wonder if there really are people using their OS in esperanto
When learning a language, it might be useful to switch the OS language for a while. You already know how everything is labeled in your native tongue, it helps to gradually extend your vocabulary.
that's indeed an interesting point!

Valve dev clarifies what some of their upcoming and recent Linux work is actually for

Quoting: fagnerln
Quoting: rustybroomhandleI still want to know what the mission is with all of this. Not technically, but from a business perspective.

I get it, Linux customers are paying customers, but Valve have contracted several companies, individuals, fulltime employees, contact with GPU vendors etc. This seems like way more financial and time investment than what our meagre 1-2% is worth.
I don't think that it's something big incoming, this is just a signal to Microsoft that's a bad idea to close Windows to their store. Valve have a lot of money, even if it don't recover the investiment, I don't think that's a problem
and thats the good thing in valve not being a stock corporation but privately owned - they can do things that are "right" in the long run instead of only looking at ROI.

And while i'm not really fond of the kernel work being towards DRM, i guess we live in a reality where many people won't boycott things they don't want. So it kinda is another step towards bringing Linux to the needed marketshare...

Quoting: PhiladelphusWish the demo up on Steam wasn't just for Windows. And that Valve would get around to letting you download Windows demos and running them on Proton!
The demo works flawlessly on Proton, just click and play really.
hm, i don't see a demo, am i missing something? O_o
