Here's some of what we've learned about the Steam Deck

i also want to install additional stuff to use it partially as a small laptop, but i'm fine with appimage (don't like flatpak) as long as they keep their system updated in a reasonable cycle with most recent security fixes, etc.
hopefully there will be more projects releasing appimage version so one can directly use that on the steam deck... but i'd rather prefer having some community repository/-ies (like packman) included in steamos or be able to add that to the system... would make it much more usable and easier to use...

Quoting: elmapul"- SteamOS will have a read-only immutable main filesystem by default. Updates will be distributed as a whole image and so it will replace it. There will also be a developer mode to let you modify the filesystem."well, if you compare it to a real linux desktop it's definitely not understable... but in the end this is a mobile console, so valve wants to make sure the environment is in a state devs can rely upon, so they can be sure that what was tested in their lab behaves the same way for the users... just like playstation and others...
that is the part i dont get...
how they plan to allow people to install stuff then?
i mean, either you will have to rely on stuff that dont mess with the filesystem (eg: flatpaks, app images) stuff that dont install, update or remove dependences.
or you have to use developer mode to install anything that is not on steam.

Valve answers the question: should developers do native Linux support or Proton?

there's examples where the linux port is better and there's others where the linux port sucks but the proton version performes better than running it on windows... regarding support a native linux version is better if the developers really support it; there's been experiences where devs throw out a linux but with the attitude: use it if you're feeling lucky, because we won't help you if it doesn't work...
hopefully, instead of porting stuff, people will finally start to do real multi-platform development from the start; that will eventually save time and all gamers will be running the same version no matter which platform they're on; there's enough toolkits for that nowadays that run quite fine (interestingly already in use by quite a few devs - also big studios - that are actually only releasing on windows)

Quoting: platinumspoonsSome other interesting tidbits I heard:so much for the simulator, what about the actual deck? will the banana be integrated? is it an option? or do i have to get my own one? if i need to get it myself, does the type or brand or ripeness matter/influence the experience? if so, how?
-OS-level FSR can be used on games that don't support it natively
-suspend/resume API which will allow game developers to save/load thru cloud on suspend/resume
-Steam input configs are being moved to Steam Workshop
-For developers without a steam deck, they can create a similar experience with a mini-pc running Manjaro, small monitor and playstation controller, which they call the "Hacken deck": https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/steamdeck/testing [External Link]
Note: The banana is a critical part of creating an accurate Steam Deck simulator

hmm... assassin's creed (at least odyssey and origins) worked before, already with 5.something ...
i already have mass effect legendary running on proton experimental for a while now and it seems to work quite (a little bit stuttering on start, but after a few minutes it runs good), but i haven't progressed a lot into the game yet (3hrs only), but mass effect andremoda became unplayable after a while; started at about 20hrs playtime that sometimes (rarely) the game turned into a slideshow, and now - after 20 hours more - i came to a point where, when i start a conversation or try to navigate somewhere or do anything else but walking around the ship, it just turns into a slideshow.... i really hope that doesn't happen with legendary too..

Quoting: tom34Thanks for the hint, worked. The correct json-file for nvidia is in '/etc/vulkan/...' though, at least on openSUSE, but that fixed it.Quoting: peta77It surely sounds interesting, but currently all that War Thunder does for me - since an update a while ago - is crashing right after the launcher... hope they get that fixed too....Try this fix, worked for me: https://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/535429-immediate-crash-on-game-launch/&do=findComment&comment=9114778 [External Link]
Quoting: uriilSent the crash report multiple times, but apparently no one cares about it. Created a support ticket and they didn't care either. They just suggested: talk to other users in some forums... Don't know why they call it "support", I'd call it an interactive FAQ. Has been rather a nuisance than anything helpful for pretty much all tickets i created so far.Quoting: peta77It surely sounds interesting, but currently all that War Thunder does for me - since an update a while ago - is crashing right after the launcher... hope they get that fixed too....Have you reported it yet? Right now I play War Thunder only, Vulkan was a big improve!

Looks quite good already, especially for an early alpha. Could be something nice for the steam-deck.
Needs a little bit training to get used to the controls when using mouse and keyboard.

Ion Fury gets a big 2.0 patch ahead of the Aftershock expansion in 2022

Quoting: HamishWell, I don't care if it's sprites, pixel art or whatever. As a player I'm only judging the visual appearance, not the technical stuff of the backend. And I rather prefer the modern, more realistic look. That's all I wanted to say.Quoting: peta77If they'd give it modern graphics, I'd grab it. But this pixelated stuff is not something I like. You can have your own taste, but these graphics are hardly "pixelated". They are highly detailed sprites rather than models but that is nowhere near the same thing. I would agree that a lot of the games 3D Realms has been showing at Realms Deep do go overboard in their attempts to look retro but Ion Fury is not actually one of them.
As for me, well, I guess this gives me even more of an excuse to procrastinate on actually playing the game until the patch is released.
RC model flying simulator Wings is now available for Linux

The "demo" (FPS-Checker, you can download the linux version on the buy page of the website) looks quite nice, but the achievable framerates are quite low.
They need some optimizations then it will be fantastic.
Nevertheless looks quite interesting, air racing is a cool thing, especially when a little bit more realistic.
But the engine sound of those RC thingies is quite annoying.
