Each time I felt like playing, I remembered the immense pain and time investment I had to do just to learn how to control the damn game, my interest in playing again quickly subsided.

Quoting: soulsourceAnd that's just one example. There are plenty of things that are really hard to bring over to actual graphics, but work well with ASCII.True, but aside from actual graphics just being more pleasing to look at for... almost everyone, probably .... there is also the mouse issue, which for me was always the biggest blocker to play Dwarf Fortress again.

But in the end, it felt more like I'm trying to set up a workstation with specific tooling.
With a game, you just kind of want to start it and play, maybe tick some boxes for the mods you want to activate.

Quoting: redneckdrowWell, you can always use TWBT via dfhack. I use McArcady's LinuxDwarfPack just so I don't have to fool with managing dfhack et al. myself. In fact, I find some functions of dfhack vital to my enjoyment of the game: namely exportlegends, workflow (a simpler manager interface), and the fairly recent embark-assistant (Much better than the default find embark!). I really hope that the paid version is still compatible. At one point or another, I think I did and had all of these things.
The nestboxes command also saves my sanity by preventing dwarves from eating eggs in them! Without it, you have to manually forbid and unforbid 'em, and that's the ultimate pain to keep up a decent hatching industry.
I prefer Dwarf Therapist to dfhack's labormanager though.

Unfortunate for those who'll need to pay more now (including me... thanks for at least a decade of failed financial policies, ECB), but honestly long overdue.

That's a VERY cheap asset flip of whoever did that.
Not stupid, I gotta say - they might even make a few bucks before it gets pulled.
Why don't the actual devs put it on Steam, though?
Mindustry is a great example that a game can both be free and sold on Steam by the same people.

But there's no harm in trying it. In the worst case, its setup won't work and you'll have to do the EmulationStation setup yourself (and at least the emulators will be installed already).
In the normal case, you'll save hours of annoying work.
It's also not that unusual. RetroPie is even more of a layer tower and I don't think people have many issues with it.

Quoting: brokkrTheoretically, sure.Quoting: TheSHEEEPOn the one hand, I did find RetroArch tedious to figure out, on the other hand... that's a jenga tower of layers (ED > ES > RA > emulator) that seems to beg for something to go wrong, no?Quoting: brokkrIs EmuDeck similar to RetroArch in that it's more of an interface and configuration tool to emulators than emulation software itself? And is there overlap with RetroArch or do they cover completely different targets?EmuDeck is basically "just" a bunch of scripts with a bit of UI to set up EmulationStation (which internally uses RetroArch and other emulators when "launching" a game) for you. So it's not an either/or thing.
It does all the annoying setup of config files, etc. according to your wishes in a very easy to use manner.
VERY useful and saves hours of time.

I do wonder what exactly they changed about the hotkeys, because I was perfectly happy with the ones in version 1.X.
