NVIDIA driver 515.57 and Vulkan Beta 515.49.06 out now

Quoting: robredz
Quoting: CorbenAnd I just updated to 515.48.07 on Ubuntu which had the 32bit libs missing for a while.
K, waiting for this update to arrive :)

I'm wondering about the NvFBC entries though, I thought that feature is only available to quadro cards? I mean, there is the "nvidia-patch" repo which enables NvFBC for consumer cards, and I can highly recommend it especially when using OBS with the obs-nvfbc plugin, as it improves performances significantly over the "normal" desktop capture of OBS. And I don't have many regrets patching the driver, as it's really just a software flag, the hardware is totally capable... it's just this feeling doing stuff outside of official support.
I had to revert to 510, as multiple games refused to load in Steam with the 515 driver and the missing 32 bit libs might try that patch repo, if it works OK with RTX cards
Since 27th of June it should all work, you might have to install the recommended packages manually though. E.g. for me "apt install nvidia-driver-515" wasn't enough when initially upgrading from 510 when the 32 bit libs where still missing. So I was able to install it, skipping the missing libs, 64 bit games worked, 32 bit games didn't...

After downgrading to 510 again, an upgrade with i386 packages included to 515 went smoothly though, and everything works now. So yeah, you might have to do some terminal tinkering, but it's working now.

Looks like Valve are gearing up for a new 'Deckard' VR Headset

With the Steam Deck improving gaming overall on Linux, I hope the Deckard will help with VR games on Linux. There are still quite some annoyances, like async reprojection (on nVidia) still having issues, Steam VR crashes, etc. And while Windows users can use LIV to present VR games easily in mixed reality to viewers, we Linux gamers have to hope for integrated 3rd person cams or to depend on mods. And even then it's kinda tricky to do the calibration manually.

Valve has done a great job with the Deck... fingers crossed they can pull off another success story with their next VR HMD.

Haven't tested BlazeRush on Deck yet, but on PC the native Linux version has issues for me. We are playing this game here and there again and again for years, and it used to work fine, but since a few months some issues occured for me: Opening the Steam overlay freezes the game, and the analog stick is not detecting full acceleration when tilted (using Steam Controller). Switched to Proton and everything works again as it used to be. I guess a Steam Linux Runtime updated causes a regression. Sadge, but I guess tha game isn't maintained anymore to get this fixed.

This Steam Deck Durability Test had me watching in horror

LOL, same! It did hurt so much to see this... well... FOR SCIENCE!
And yes, when I carry mine around, I also put it into the case! Better safe than sorry.
Just ordered a dbrand screen protector too!

Nice to see the inner things of the ABXY buttons though.

Linux user share on Steam hits second highest percentage in years

Cool to see this number rising again... my first thought was: it doesn't matter that much anymore. The Steam Deck has changed the mind of publishers and developers already, as they are either supporting the Deck explicitly or at least are looking into it. And this helps us "few" Linux desktop gamers as well.

On the other hand though, we still would benefit from a bigger market share on the desktop, as there is more than only games to use on our PCs. We want official Linux support for more than just games. Drivers, devices, etc... hopefully when people realize they can also play most of their games (if not even all) on the Linux desktop, it helps more people deciding to use Linux on a more regular basis. Small steps, with the Steam Deck being a big one :D

Atm I'm using nvidia-patch [External Link] and obs-nvfbc [External Link]. Normally I don't have many issues with neither window capture nor full screen capture, but recently, when Cyberpunk didn't get captured and I switched to full screen capture, I saw a massive performance hit. Does not happen at all with nvfbc.

Advantage now is, I don't have to worry about creating a new source for a window capture as I can set the obs-nvfbc source to capture just one of my desktops. And the better performance when capturing.

Disadvantage though, I have to patch the nvidia driver with every release, and it's not officially supported.

Cyberpunk 2077 gets an official Steam Deck setting but seems broken (updated)

Yesterday I thought the patch to 1.52 has wrecked the great performance patch 1.5 has brought again. I wasn't able to get a smooth experience anymore while e.g. just turning the character's view around. No matter what I tried helped, lowering to High preset, with DLSS to quality... still choppy. And before it was possible for me to play on Ultra preset without any DLSS or FSR.
Best I could do was setting it to High and FSR to quality, unfortunately there was a visible quality loss.

But it was on my end, obs was apparently causing it, as after shutting it down the issue was gone.

Bungie say a big fat no to Proton and Steam Deck for Destiny 2
2 Mar 2022 at 12:39 am UTC Likes: 10

It's their loss... not ours. There are enough other games to play, really.
Of course I'd like to see Destiny 2 supported on Deck (which would include Linux desktop support), but if they are really that anti-Deck and anti-Linux... pfff, who cares. They'll probably get quite some people demanding to be able to play the game on Deck, so maybe they'll reconsider at some point.

If you really wanna play Destiny 2 now iirc it's free to play (at least the base game) on Stadia, given you have an Internet connection capable of streaming it. And I guess that could work via Chrome on Deck as well.
