Proton 7.0 out with Easy Anti-Cheat improvements, more games for Linux & Steam Deck
16 Feb 2022 at 8:31 am UTC Likes: 2

Time to test Star Wars: Squadrons again! I've already seen the easyanticheat so file being delivered, but I still got kicked out of multiplayer matches. Time to test again with Proton 7.
According to the tweet [External Link] of flibitijibibo Proton 7 is also being used for the Deck verified program.

OBS Studio 27.2 is out bringing Flatpak support and much more
16 Feb 2022 at 7:46 am UTC

Quoting: SamsaiYou can probably install some plugins the traditional way by putting them in the ~/.var/app/com.obsproject.Studio/<some-subfolder> directory, provided that they don't depend on external libraries not supplied by the runtime. It's not great, but it might work just well enough. At least I managed to install Luxtorpeda into the Steam Flatpak that way.
Yeah, I've seen that directory, and you can put in those plugins that are also provided as a zip. Unfortunately NDI isn't. And the effort trying to get it done through unpacking the .deb file or grabbing the files from the aur and putting in there seems a bit too much. Well, the situation will probably change with more people using the flatpak version and creating more demand for an easier way to install those plugins.

Though flatpak seems nice as it brings the "connect account" functionality and the browser source, it's tricky to get some plugins installed. I found the websocket plugin as a flatpack, but e.g. no luck with the NDI plugin.

NVIDIA fix up a Vulkan problem with the v510.54 driver release
14 Feb 2022 at 3:33 pm UTC

The nvidia 510 driver series seems to come along nicely. E.g. for VR. So I heard it should make async reprojection more stable, but first time I tried it wth Elite: Dangerous it locked up my system so hard, I had to pull the power plug :woot:
But indeed, as soon as I disabled esync for Elite (via PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%) it was rock solid for about 3 hours. I was even able to play ED in VR High settings and experienced quite a smooth session. Just as before, desktop windows I bring into the VR space via xrdesktop are a bit jumpy, but I can live with that.
As long as the head tracking is now smooth and stable. And it was yesterday, I can't express how happy I was to have a stable session over several hours :D

PS: also disable MangoHud, at least the way I use MangoHud for vsync it seems to make ED crash in the intro scene already. So my command is
DISABLE_MANGOHUD=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%

Get ready to sweat with VR rhythm game Groove Gunner out now
11 Feb 2022 at 8:06 am UTC

There's also a few tricks for anyone interested in livestreaming it including:

  • LIV support to use avatars and custom camera angles
This applies to Windows users only though. I wish LIV would work on Linux, but it's not available, neither native nor through wine/Proton.
But if the game has a freely configurable cam build in... it's possible to get something similar on screen. Beat Saber has it via the cam+/cam2 mod, Synth Riders, Boom Box and Cybrid have it built in.
But I think Ehvis said Groove Gunner has that feature on the road map too.

Eggnut decide not to bring Backbone to Linux officially
10 Feb 2022 at 9:15 am UTC Likes: 10

Hm... the reason I backed it was the promised Linux version. It's mind boggling they promise the Linux version and now realizing they have absolutely no clue how to do it and fail now trying. I would've thought that at least some preparation in that regard would have been done beforehand. At least to check if it's feasible.
Well, refunds are okay, trust is gone nonetheless.
Though missing cut-scenes sounds like: Proton-GE to the rescue!
Or just wait until Valve has re-encoded the videos, like they already did for many others (Exo One).
But I guess I'll take a copy for the Switch then.

Epic Games CEO says a clear No to Fortnite on Steam Deck

Quoting: Ehvis...
True.

My concern is now, that no developer or publisher will even bother to use the Linux/Wine/Proton enabled AC because of Tim's statement. Why taking the risk at all, if not even the company that creates it has enough convidence to use it in their own products and is vocal about it?

How about learning to fix it? What use does EAC have if it's compatible with Wine/Linux but it's not safely protecting from cheating?
Thank's Tim for destroying any hopes for games using this POS (piece of software :P) to be running on Linux.
I can't believe it... this statement renders all efforts from Valve bringing these games to Linux or the Deck worthless...

Heroic Games Launcher for Epic Games on Linux gets some more fixes
7 Feb 2022 at 9:39 am UTC Likes: 2

I wonder if Epic will either adapt this project, or if they wanna come up with their own Linux or better Steam Deck native version of their launcher. Tim Sweeney was very exited about the openness of the Deck as it's a PC. And seeing the effort Valve and Epic put into the support for EAC, there is definitely some interest from Epic in the Deck. I can't imagine they expect people to install Windows to play games from the EGS, so if Epic officially wants their games on the Deck... some official support has to arrive.

Only 18 days left... *fingerscrossed*

NVIDIA 510.47.03 is out adding Vulkan 1.3, GeForce RTX 3050 support
3 Feb 2022 at 7:30 am UTC

Looking forward to when the PPA updates. I hope they don't forget to whitelist the necessary 32bit libraries, maybe that's why it takes a bit longer for the update to arrive.
On Arch the new driver is already available.
