Feral no longer porting A Total War Saga: TROY to Linux, citing less demand since Proton

Though it hurts us on a personal level now... let's hope for the best. And due to Proton and the Steam Deck that Linux gaming is becoming something more appealing for devs and publishers in the long run. It will be a tough time while Proton does most of the heaving lifting, but once Linux is established as and has proven to be a viable gaming platform, the native ports should become more important again.

But even then external porting might not be as important as it has been. Maybe it'll be done more in house even. I guess outsourcing a Linux (and Mac) port has had it's zenith, and we kinda knew it already before Proton was a thing.

Quoting: subIsn't this basically backpedaling from the earlier claim, the Steam Deck will support the full catalog?
Have they ever made that claim?
Well, they said it in their Steamworks Quick Tips:

And they refer to work that has been done for Proton which has not yet arrived in the public version of Proton. So, maybe they have all the major issues already solved, or upcoming solutions that need to mature a bit more before release.

Will be interesting to see how they limit the FPS.
E.g. I'm using MangoHud (maybe MangoHud uses libstrangle?). That's especially helpful with games, that can either have no vsync or when vsync is active limit the FPS to 30 (happens e.g. in Dead Space games). So with MangoHud I can always disable vsync in games, but still have vsync through MangoHud active.

It was a bit sad to see how so many people where complaining about the 30 FPS, because they didn't fully understand. I guess that's why plagman2 felt urged to clarify: it's the lowest bar, and mostly it'll be better.

Valve corrects the RAM specs for the Steam Deck, games should run nicely from SD Card

You might have several SD cards holding libraries, or when docking you want to have the external storage accessible immediately to make it a smooth experience.
Yep, it's on the way:

A new Valve game for the Steam Deck? It's not out of the realm of possibility

Aww, also when using teleport instead of locomotion?

I do have issues with locomotion myself, but I also learnt it depends on the game. Boneworks for example causes heavy motion sickness after 1.5h - 2h, and I have to sit down, stop playing and the sickness still lasts for quite a while.
I have no isses at all with teleport though, there I could play for hours and hours, without any issues.

But there is the VR mod for GTFO, where you also only have locomotion. And this is done so well, I can play the game for several hours without any issues.

This could either mean, I kinda got used to locomotion now (haven't touched Boneworks in a while though), or the way locomotion is implemented in GTFO VR is way better than in the other games I tried so far.

Back to topic though: Valve also has to release another VR game! *please*

There will be new game by Valve sooner or later. From (what I think is) a business perspective, it shouldn't come alongside the release of the Steam Deck. Yeah, the Steam Deck totally speaks for itself, and Valve themselves claim their work on having all Games working on the Deck by release, via Proton that has already a lot of work done which is not in the public release yet:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q_C5KVJbUw&t=135s [External Link]

So I'd image that a new Valve game will come like in a year, and it will be perfectly suited for the Deck. No idea in what genre though. L4D3? Valve never does a third part of a series, right? *scnr*

I'd image a new title in the Portal universe, as "jumping" through portals would probably make VR players insta-puke :D

Ryan Gordon and Ethan Lee on Proton and the Steam Deck

Quoting: dubigrasuWhile I don't dismiss what Ethan says, I'm more inclined to side with Gordon.
I think valve plays the long game here, we have a saying: befriend the devil until you cross the bridge.
I hope the same, but until then, what should Ethan do if devs aren't hiring him for a while? Let's hope there will be enough devs and/or publishers to contract him until the bridge is crossed.

Hmm... imagine a powerful ARM Steam Deck... with ARM Linux, ARM Steam, ARM Proton... maybe it'll allow for even better performance in a small handheld.
