Fedora Linux 42 Beta and Fedora Asahi Remix 42 Beta released
19 Mar 2025 at 9:33 pm UTC

Hopefully by the time GNOME 48 & Fedora 42 are both out, the new system font will also be implemented: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/adwaita-fonts [External Link]
The new beta still seems to have Cantarell; though the fonts are already in the repos.
enabling the testing repos already has F42 use adwaita-fonts as default for gnome-shell.

SDL3 defaults to Wayland if the currently running compositor supports fifo-v1: https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/commit/ab916a959e096a3af9502b50a622eda0e8f83253 [External Link] + https://github.com/libsdl-org/SDL/commit/313d522f39c5b6aa9fa3498d41c75c7d560250da [External Link]

fifo-v1 compositor status: https://wayland.app/protocols/fifo-v1#compositor-support [External Link]

keep in mind that the status pages only track stable releases. the protocol has already been merged for Gnome 48 for example.

Quoting: wvstolzingSpeaking of GNOME (which I've gone back to using), I recently found out about this issue on the official gitlab: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gsettings-desktop-schemas/-/issues/52 [External Link] — there seems to be a serious initiative to replace Cantarell as the UI font, with Inter. I really hope this gets carried through.
I pay little attention to fonts. What's the difference between the two?
On gitlab they mention missing glyphs in Cantarell; though that isn't its worst shortcoming, IMHO. The kerning just seems off, and in various combinations, the 'a's, 'e's, and 'l's look as though they're slightly shifted to the left or right; which all result in a jarring, uneven look. There are no italics; and I believe the bold version is missing even more glyphs. Overall it looks amateurish; which isn't surprising, as it was originally designed for a university course assignment, and later fixed up a little to become GNOME's ui font.

Inter's glyphs look a bit too square-ish, I think; but at least they're perfectly consistent; so you don't get the occasional lumpy look. I think elementary os uses it for their UI; it's also becoming popular on webpages -- see, e.g., https://forgejo.org/ [External Link]

Either Noto Sans or Inter would make a better ui font for GNOME, I think -- or even IBM Plex Sans.
I've been using Inter on both desktop and notebook for 4 weeks now and I quite like it. I agree it would be a great successor to Cantarell. If you wanna give it a try and are on Fedora there's an package called `rsms-inter-fonts` (`inter-font` on Arch), afterwards set Interface, Document and Legacy Window Titles to `Inter Regular` in gnome-tweaks (size 11 is default).

Sons Of The Forest adds FSR 2.0 and better settings for Steam Deck

Quoting: TheRiddickMaybe one day steam deck will get some sort of RDNA2 frame gen going.
"AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation is recommended to be used in situations where pre-interpolation, post-upscaling frame rate is a minimum of 60. In ideal situations FSR 3 will produce images up to 120fps from a 60fps game input." - https://gpuopen.com/fsr3-in-games-technical-details/ [External Link]

Counter-Strike 2 is out now with Linux support

Explicitly choosing an audio device in the Audio settings "fixed" the no audio issue for me on Fedora 38.

It seems AMDGPU+mesa is affected by colorful outlines for the smoke grenades. While AMD APUs+mesa (and some AMDGPUs...) do not render the smoke at all with enemies being fully rendered behind the "invisible" smoke... that's a complete No Go for a competitive shooter. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/csgo-osx-linux/issues/3258#issuecomment-1738151926 [External Link]

Proton Experimental improves Baldur's Gate 3 launcher, Unreal Engine 4 bugs on Intel GPUs

Quoting: JarmerDo you know a command to skip the launcher but ensure that vulkan is chosen as the renderer? Every time I play the game I have to remember to select vulkan in the larian launcher because it defaults to dx every single time.
As Steam game launch parameter: eval $( echo gamemoderun mangohud "%command%" | sed "s/Launcher\/LariLauncher.exe'.*/bin\/bg3.exe'/" )

remove gamemoderun / mangohud as you see fit. replace bg3.exe with bg3_dx11.exe to start DX11 instead.

Inspired by F.E.A.R., the retro FPS 'Selaco' is getting a big demo upgrade

Hi Linas,
This change is not yet ready for upstream or Proton. Regarding your mouse handling experience, are you using a GNOME desktop? There is one very important change on the way for Gnome 42 (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/1915) - before this mouse input was synced to the display's refresh rate which results in very choppy movement for games with a higher framerate than the display's refresh rate. That's why VSync helps so much in these cases (https://streamable.com/myr3kh).
