Valve to ship 'more than double' the number of Steam Decks each week

Quoting: Purple Library Guy
Quoting: CyborgZetaFor $400, the Steam Deck is a heck of a deal. I bought a 512 GB SSD to replace the SSD for less than $100, so for less than $500 I get a handheld PC
Hmmm . . . say, slightly off topic, but during the run-up to the Deck arriving people were talking about it being sort of secondarily, on top of the gaming, like having a really cheap little laptop. It occurs to me that while it's a bit underwhelming as a laptop, it can totally replace a tablet, like an iPad or something. I mean, it's like a tablet only the gaming is better, it's easier to hold, and it's got controllers. Pretty much anything you can do on a tablet, you can do on the Deck, only it's probably easier and more comfortable.
I think this is totally true. I have an old Amazon Fire and have been trying to figure out how to turn it into a Linux tablet for a while. It occurred to me when I started playing around with desktop mode on the Deck that I have a Linux tablet now.

I mean, not all that cost effective compared to a Fire, but better in every other way.

Some Steam Decks ship with an x2 SSD instead of an x4 SSD

Quoting: ColorblindmonkYeah there's gonna be no difference. You're gonna run up against other bottlenecks before ever maxing out the SSD. Though that won't stop the average Redditor from making a fuss over it.
Well, silently changing the specs for some is bound to annoy people. If Valve would have been upfront about it, done a blogpost explaining it and providing their benchmarks, i guess nobody really would complain.
But changing it an hoping noone will notice is bound to be perceived as deceptive and not taking the customer serious...
But... they didn't change it and hope no one will notice? It looks like they have pretty clearly explained that they've made this switch for some units.

Good.

I got mine Friday and I'm loving it. I hope everyone who's still waiting doesn't have to wait too much longer!

Quoting: TermyOther people's "admiration" (read: bragging rights) should also not be you sole motivation to invest time into getting better. If achievements are the only thing that motivates you to dig into a difficult game, you really should work on your self-sufficiency.
Who are you to say what should or shouldn't motivate people?
Motivation is a very hard thing to come by, so honestly, any source of it is absolutely valid to me.

Quoting: TermyThere are people out there that just don't have the reaction time or motor skills to master such a gamne - and there is nothing they can do about it, no matter how hard they train.
That is quite simply not true.
Everyone (unless an actual disability prevents them*) is capable of learning any skill at least to a level of "competent". Obviously, people have varying amounts of talent, but talent never prevents you from improving yourself in a skill - it "only" makes the process longer or faster.

I can fully understand that someone doesn't want to invest the time necessary to "git gud" in a game. I'm the same way about fighting games ala Street Fighter, hence I stopped playing them.
But then I just play one of the thousands of other games more suitable to me - I don't go about demanding Street Fighter be changed to suit my own laziness. I absolutely despise that kind of handout mentality, as it breeds weak minds. Nor would I want to impact the club of people who like SF the way that it is.

* And even then there are people who overcome their disabilities, e.g. the guy who beat Elden Ring (and others) while being only able to move his head and mouth, using a "mouth controller".
The guy could have gone whining on social media like so many others. Instead he overcame. Truly inspiring!

Quoting: TermyWhy exclude those people just because you tend to take shortcuts, just because they exist?
This makes zero sense to me. Not sure I get what you are talking about here.
You sure are expending a bunch of energy complaining about something that has literally no effect on you whatsoever. The lapsed writer in me is jealous of your word count in this thread.

P.S., no one cares about your video game achievements except you. It isn't an exclusive club, it's a club of one that nobody else has any interest in joining.

"Somehow"? Is it really a mystery?

DOS2 was huge. Nobody is upset about the lack of native Linux support except Linux gamers, and we officially don't care anymore because nobody is doing native Linux games now and we have more games to play than ever.

Bungie say a big fat no to Proton and Steam Deck for Destiny 2
7 Apr 2022 at 11:39 pm UTC

Quoting: slaapliedjeIt's funny that people keep saying 'OMG, only like 2%!' but when you factor in the total amount of video game players on the planet... that 2% becomes A LOT!
It's not 2% of the total amount of video game players on the planet. It's 2% of PC game players buying games through Steam. That's a much smaller pool. And even so, it means approximately 98% of Steam customers are not in that category. So it doesn't make much sense to say, "We're not going to let 98% of our customers play [huge game many people want] unless the other 2% can also play it."

LOL. Their marketing department is the troll who shows up in every Steam discussion where anyone mentions Linux.

What a bunch of assholes.

Quoting: Super-GI don't get why Valve is accepting this.
What are they supposed to do about it, exactly?

Quoting: Super-GThe games are key to the success of Proton and the Steam Deck. It should be a requirement for anyone distributing on Steam that they not hamper technologies developed and promoted for the platform.
This is probably not a hill they want to die on just yet. Linux users still account for barely over 1% of Steam sales, I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this). Hopefully the Steam Deck will help move the needle, but until that proves true, we don't have a lot of bargaining power and Valve still owes a good experience to the overwhelming majority of their users who are still on Windows.

GOG update their stance on DRM-free, Galaxy as 'optional' for single-player

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualFor Windows? I face these issues with DRM regularly for visual novels on GNU/Linux through WINE, but never have on Windows. Though I've only been playing games for ~10 years.
It was in Steam on Linux, using Proton, but when looking for a solution, I learned that people attempting to play several Ubisoft games on Windows have experienced the same issue.

GOG update their stance on DRM-free, Galaxy as 'optional' for single-player
23 Mar 2022 at 3:31 am UTC

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualIt would certainly be effective at convincing people who don't buy because they can get it for free to buy the game, but as for people who want a game unencumbered by Denuvo's anti-tamper software or people who simply don't have the money, I don't think it would have much effect.
I don't know. Maybe I'm not the typical case, but while I think DRM is generally bullshit, I am too old to download cracked games or tools to crack games. I have no clue where that shit comes from and I don't trust it.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualI've personally never had DRM preventing me from playing a game—assuming I was using Windows, of course. Singleplayer games that require an internet connection to play are something everyone is willing to raise their pitchforks over, but these are far and few between.

The problem is no longer that DRM is ineffective and inconveniences customers.
I have had this issue, and recently (though it was an older game). I bought one of the older Assassin's Creed games on Steam and the damned Ubisoft launcher kept prompting me for a CD key. I assume there is a workaround for this, but it was not worth it to me to find out how, and I returned the game instead.
