Oh, that's something Deck users are going to like.

You should avoid the stock Firefox install on Steam Deck as it's badly outdated (updated)

Quoting: slaapliedjeI just checked, the version in Debian Stable is 91.11.0. So there's that!Debian's 91.11.0 is perfectly up-to-date (June 28, 2022), unlike 96.0.3 in SteamOS repos (January 27, 2022). Firefox 96 wasn't an ESR at all.

The actual shutdown doesn't start until the screen goes black and shows the Deck logo, like on a startup.

Quoting: brokkrInteresting. I would have assumed that sshd would terminate pretty quickly once shutdown commences, regardless of whether something else hangs. But it's worth testing for sure. The issue here is that when Steam hangs, the shutdown doesn't commence at all, because Steam client is waiting for a game (or whatever) to close before it actually triggers system shutdown. If you do it manually via ssh, you're bypassing Steam.

Quoting: Liam DaweValve has certainly never mentioned it.It's been there at least since May, couldn't check earlier ;) Plus I've seen it recently mentioned in a post about running SteamOS in a VM [External Link] by SteamOS dev Alberto Garcia.

Quoting: Liam Daweit's in their development repos rather than a release is what I gather you're saying. No, it is released. There are three release branches you can choose from the UI: stable, beta and main, and Firefox isn't there on main at least since the last release on 2022-06-29. Repos are another matter, there are already some updates there that haven't been included in any released image yet.

Quoting: GuestAs I said, it's only been changed on main branch, so not on beta nor stable yet - but the change was already made about a week ago nevertheless, so it's now just a matter of time until it reaches other branches.Quoting: dosThe latest SteamOS doesn't install Firefox by default for a few days now, the change just hasn't reached beta branch yet (it's only on main). It's still included in the stable branch.

Quoting: Liam DaweThe latest SteamOS doesn't install Firefox by default for a few days now, the change just hasn't reached beta branch yet (it's only on main).Quoting: CyborgZetaSo I disabled the read-only filesystem, removed Firefox, and then re-enabled it. All good now. That change will be likely lost though when you do a new SteamOS upgrade, due to how upgrades are handled. Still for now it's a neat little adjustment for people who want to rid themselves fully of the outdated version. Hopefully Valve will sort this now with us highlighting it.

Yay! This release finally includes my ALSA patch [External Link] for an incredibly peculiar issue I debugged when I noticed that the native build of Day of the Tentacle Remastered doesn't play any sound on Deck and I wanted to find out why. It turned out it was because of... Btrfs [External Link] :D

Quoting: brokkrI recently encountered a nasty bug where my Deck was unable to shut down (the shutting down animation just kept playing) and all I could do was to leave it overnight to drain the battery. When that happens (usually as a result of my own hacking) I ssh into it and initiate a shutdown/reboot there, which makes it shut down cleanly.
Microsoft chucks GNOME $10,000 from their FOSS Fund

Why does pocket money like this grant Microsoft so much PR fuss? There are companies out there that fund GNOME development with multiplies of that amount *each month*.
- GOG now using AI generated images on their store
- Valve's in-development game Deadlock just got a massive upgrade
- GPD claim the WIN 5 is getting an official Bazzite Linux adaptation but the Bazzite team say otherwise
- AMD confirm the Ryzen 7 9850X3D launch date and pricing
- Ubisoft implementing cost-reduction restructuring, cancelling various games and closing studios
