Clearing up what games will and won't run on the Steam Deck

Quoting: PhiladelphusI interpreted that initial comment as saying 100% of games would work with Proton, and I was definitely skeptical of Valve pulling that off before December, unless they're sitting on a ton of improvements they haven't released yet. This interpretation makes a lot more sense. Thankfully it doesn't make a difference to me, but I can see this being a turn-off for Windows gamers. Hopefully Valves pulls off enough Proton improvements by December to get enough of the popular games working that Windows gamers are willing to wait for further improvements.
I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion, but I think it's smart of Valve to hedge their bets and support Windows too.

For many it will make the purchase a much safer choice. SteamOS sucks for your particular game? Install Windows and go about your business. The hardware is still great, so you recommend it to a friend. When they purchase the Deck Proton have progressed somewhat and they are happy with the OOTB SteamOS experience.

A key to the success of the Deck is to get game developers on board, and the best way to get their attention is to push units. By hook or by crook.
The easiest way for game devs is to wait untils the majority of the Deck owners installed windows....

Bad expectation management can kill the success of a product.
Here is a serious problem, that may kill SteamOS as a product. People will be disappointed about this shit Linux that does not run game <xyz> and install windows :dizzy:

Quoting: Liam DaweSeems anytime people mention it not starting is AMD/Mesa. Hopefully the driver devs can find a fix since it works on Nvidia.
Hmm, I have the feeling, that AMD users do more often have problems to get games running nicely.
I do not have a statistic of course, but it seems to me, that it is more often. When I look if some game runs with proton, that I want to buy, or read on reddit - it seems to be, that Nvidia (besides the OSS aspect), gives users less problems.

Is that game playable for a 10 year old, or is it too complicated for kids at that age?

Interesting more hardware to come, but will it be in stock and purchasable at a reasonable price?

Any support for Linux outside of it running on the deck is incidental, it isn't supported officially.
Wow, that is a negative statement! He does not even consider it "nice to have" or "it is nice for the Linux community if it works" - no it is an incident if it works?
I mean, that is like:"shit, it works for the Linux people!"

Or is this my misunderstanding because of my non native speaker skills?
What he's saying is: "We do not intend for it to work on Linux and if it does it's a coincidence"
Or to put another way " We will not do anything to make it work on Linux and if it does, it's a coincidence"

Further, it infers no garuntee that Linux won't be broken by updates.

While the words aren't generally considered kind. It is very honest and direct. Is likely the same thoughts of most devs on Steam. I mean how many new big name releases coming out for Steam Deck have been announced with native support?

If SD is going to be a success, it's mainly because proton will be a success, I think. I'm not convinced that will turn into more native releases or better hardware support.
Ok,that was a misunderstanding from my side then. I considered he sees it as a kind of "Incident", which is an unwanted behavior in my thinking. If we have an Incident in our company, we mean something is faulty.

Feral Interactive confirms Total War: WARHAMMER III for Linux is in progress

https://www.feralinteractive.com/en/linux-games/ [External Link]

There's actually quite a mix in there.
I count eight Total War games, so almost a third of the games in that list are TW! Four in the list carry the name Warhammer; you can see how some might think that all Feral port are TW and Warhammer games. Shame Feral couldn't have signed up for some more varied franchises as I might have spent more with them.
They surely can not just "sign up" for more games to port, as they rely on the publishers/devs. If they do not want it, Feral can not do a port.

I can imagine they would have liked to do a port of Cyberpunk, but you know...CDPR...

Nice luxury problem.

I will think over this, when I finally got a new GFX Card and a Valve Index....

But have a lot of fun with your new fancy toy ;-)

Looks interesting.
But when I hold my arm like this and move it around "mouselike", it seems hard to imagine, that I land a single kill with such a mouse on CS:GO.

It is surely a matter of weeks, to get the same precision, you are used to, isn't it?
