My next GPU is going to be AMD for sure.
Even if Nvidia GPUs are technically more powerful (though that's very debatable) it doesn't matter much on Linux if they drivers are garbage. On Windows it might make sense to keep using Nvidia, but on Linux I will go with AMD from now on and save myself a lot of trouble, headaches, disappointments and stuff that I paid for but cannot use or works shoddily.

They either need to be serious (right now they're anything but... and always have been) about their Linux support in their drivers, or open source them... or ideally both.

I've used Nvidia GPUs since I've been using Linux, since 2006 and never had any problems. They always just worked and it's very easy to update the drivers on Arch. I recently upgraded my GTX 970 to an AMD RX 6600 and it was incredibly painful. I even had to buy a new monitor! I wish I'd waited for an RTX 3060 at the time.

It's all working smoothly now (eventually) but I'm writing this just for balance as I see a lot of people on here moan about Nvidia drivers :tongue:

Edit: I also miss GPU hardware accelerated nvenc ffmpeg encoding for my DVD rips.

I've never used PA and never needed it but I do use Jack for music production. When jack2 and jack2-dbus moved to 1.9.20 I was having problems requiring I go back to 1.9.19, so I thought now's the (first) time to try Pipewire!

While it was simple to install and worked really well (I was surprised how easy a transition it was), unfortunately I was getting constant 100% DSP load in Mixbus (based on Ardour). I fiddled with the conf files but to no avail. So I'm back on Jack (fixed at 1.9.19).

I have no doubt Pipewire will get there though and I'll be switching at some point.

I spent many a happy hour on the Tomb Raiders, Deus Ex, Hitman and XCOM 2. I had no Windows partition (long gone by then) and was very excited to play them on Linux. Some of the few games I was actually happy to pay full price for. Thank you Feral.

Could you be more specific on your performance problems?

The only performance issues I've experienced are when it does the world save and I get a second or two stutter and also, heavy snow up a mountain bombs the frame rate (and then goes back to normal when it stops). This is on my previous system (GTX 970 @1080) and my current RX 6600 (@1440) with all settings maxed on both cards.

I've not done everything in the game or beaten the final boss yet but the jutty out corner wall construction build pieces (excuse my carpentry ignorance!) are not something I've come across or the curvature on the top of those doors maybe.

Edit: I'd love an abominable snowman with the mountain caves update!

Funny thing about the fire was that it didn't matter if it was behind a wall or not. I had move my pig pen a bit because of that without accidentally letting the pigs out. There were workarounds for the lights as there are few things that shine in the dark. Yellow mushrooms being easiest to acquire as long as you dare to go to the black forest.

I tried yellow mushrooms but they were only good for decoration, very little actual illumination. My pen is at the front of my castle, next to the veggie patch, so it was annoying not being able to light it up. All's good now though!
