AMD GPUs to get Ray Tracing turned on for Mesa 23.2

Great to see that the MESA devs are able to allow for Raytracing support. However i guess the "out of the box" support will still be limited to games that use Vulkan as the graphics API. For DirectX 12 titles running through proton one might still need to set a startup command to get Raytracing enabled. Performance is also still weak with MESA RADV when it comes to raytracing. The only game that is enjoyable with raytracing on my end is Doom eternal in 1080p. I am using an RX 6700 XT.

Quoting: constWonder how much wayland is actually improved. When I tried it here last week, things were flickering, maximized windows were not aligned with the screen borders, strange artifacts happened all the time. Firefox on that setup could introduce epilepsy. It was really really unpleasant. (980TI, 3 monitors, KDE)I guess it will take several years from now for nvidia to be on paar with AMD and Intel when it comes to Waylandsupport given that desktoplinux has no priority. That is also true for AND and Intel where the linuxdrivers still leave much to desire. However AMD and Intel added Waylandsupport early on instead of beeing part of the factors that where passively "blocking" it's development. Since the drivers are mainly opensource the developers of desktopenvironments and compositors could addjust there implementations of Wayland to the drivers.

I use Dolphin myself. Having it available on steam is not critical to me. I have Dolphin installed as a flatpak on my end. So any steamdeck user can easily install it that way too.
Total War: PHARAOH announced - Linux port from Feral Interactive (UPDATE: incorrect)

While i am all for native ports i wonder if this will pay off in any way for Feral Interactive. I realy enjoyed many of their ports prior to the release of Steamplay/Proton but i guess that most games run even better with proton than a native port nowadays. Another problem with the Feral ports has always been compatibility in multiplayermode. In most cases multiplayer was restricted so that you could only connect to other players on linux or maybe Mac. Given the fact that almost all potential players running the games on windows rendered the port useless as soon as you want to play with others.

Quoting: pete910Well just tried AV1 via GPU encode on my 6800xt seems to work fine. No option to use AV1 when streaming though. How did you do that? RX 6000 series GPU'S do not support AV1 encoding. RDNA 2 is limited to AV1 decoding only as far as i know. Also AV1 encoding is not supported by MESA VAAPI as of now.
Having said that do YT/twitch support streaming AV1 ?

I did some screenrecording today with the new release. I used the new VAAPI h.265 encoder with my AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT and it worked really well. However i am still missing support for global shortcuts on my KDE Plasma Wayland session.
Ubuntu 23.04 'Lunar Lobster' Beta released

Quoting: tuubiThe Kubuntu regular releases have been stable on my end. I never understood the stability argument. They are just no LTS releases which make them a bad choise for servers and in some cases production systems with the need to have a verfied environment for running proprietary software. For regular desktopuse and gaming they work reliable and stable.Quoting: ripper81358As far as i know Linux Mint is running Linux 5.15 at the moment. Ubuntu 23.04 and it's flavours will use Linux 6.2.Mint offers 5.19 (the Ubuntu HWE kernel), while newer kernels are just as easy to install as on any Ubuntu flavour or derivative. I tend to run the latest kernels and Mesa myself.
But sure, don't install a stable distro if you don't want a stable distro.

However the Systembase of Mint is very conservative and is at times even lagging behind the Ubuntu LTS packages. If you are running on newer hardware chances are that there is no support for that in Mint for quiet some time.

Quoting: sevenwhy use ubuntu cinnamon while linux mint is such a polished distro?A good question when you compare Linux Mint to the LTS Ubuntu releases since Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS itself.

I am really looking forward to this release. For general desktopuse and gaming the regular releases of Ubuntu are a good choice. I am on Kubuntu regular for years now and never had a problem with it. This distribution runs on four systems in our household ranging from more than a decade old lowend desktop all the way up to my decent desktop/gaming PC. I just add the kisak mesa ppa, the kubuntu backports paa and after additionally installing flatpaksupport i am good to go.
I get two distributionupdates a year which is a good compromise between stability and up-to-dateness of the softwarepackages in my opinion. As long as you don´t need support for some proprietary software products (like Davinci Reslove) that are only supported on the LTS release or AMD´s Radeon Software for linux, the regular release gives you a good experience.

Xwayland Video Bridge created to improve Linux screen sharing

I tried it and it worked on my end with Kubuntu 22.10 and Plasma 5.27. As of now some Apps are only working with it when installed as native packages. There seems to be a problem with universal packages (Snaps and Flatpaks) in some cases.
Developers of Electron based Apps should upgrade to newer Electron releases and enable pipewire. Pipewire runs on Wayland and X11. There are also other reasons besides linuxspecific stuff to keep Electron up to date. Older Electron releases have a very long list of security issues. This should have been fixed for a long time.
