Quoting: ForgeI don’t know that I’d be so quick to give kudos to Nvidia. They still limit Linux clients to 1080p/60Hz, which doesn’t sound that bad till you have a nice 4K/144Hz monitor and go back to dual booting for competitive games.

Worst part is that ChromeOS and Android both get unrestricted profiles, it’s just Desktop Linux getting the 1080p/60 shaft.
You get the same or even worse limitations with many videostreaming providers on linux. However linux is not officialy supported by any streamingprovider as far as i know. And there are also technical problems here like support for the needed DRM technologies like HDCP and the fact that hardware videoencoding is basicaly unsupported by all browsers on linux.

So no streaming service is really intended to work on linux at all. If does work it will more or less go the save route regarding featuresupport. That means things like 4K are clearly out of scope.

Wayland driver for Wine is getting closer

Quoting: lejimsterI keep trying to switch over to Wayland, but there is always a few quirks on gnome that wind me up and put me off using it full time, I really should test KDE as it's probably just gnome issues. Anyway, I wonder if this will have any benefits over gamescope? Even less latency? I was planning to do some testing with gamescope as it works so well on the steam deck but I haven't got around to it yet. Does anyone here run gamescope on their PC?
I dont know how to get gamescope running on PC. However i consider it to be a thing that is mainly developed for the steam deck to make games run optimal on this hardware. I am gaming on KDE 5.27.1 right now using Wayland with VRR (AMD Freesync) enabled. Works absolutely flawless on my end.

Proton 7.0-6 out now fixing EA App, Ubisoft Connect and games on Steam Deck / Linux

Anno 1800 is still refusing to work. At least on Proton Experimental Ubisoft Connect fails to "initialize". Going to offlinemode is also impossible. The game worked well but one of the updates to Ubisoft Connect broke it several weeks ago.

AMD GPU driver on Linux and Steam Deck to get big improvement on stuttering problems

I wonder if VK3D-Proton also has support for this Vulkan Extension. Would make sense as most of the newer games rely on DirectX 12.

GE-Proton removes the dxvk-async patch in version 7-45

I never used dxvk-async because stuttering became more and more of a lesser issue for me. Having Shader-Prechaching and Vulkanshader-processing turned on in steam, reduced stuttering on my end very well. But after reading this article i decided to try out the VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library extension with my Radeon RX 6700 XT and the latest stable MESA Release. I used it with two very different games, i tried Doom Eternal (Vulkan API) and Tiny Tina's Wonderland (DirectX 12 API/Proton VK3D).

Doom Eternal worked flawless. Tiny Tina's Wonderland behaved very different. The time needed to load the game was much longer. I got heavy stuttering at the first run even in the game menu. After running the game a second time i noticed that the stuttering was now mostly gone.

The MESA implementation of VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library seems to be pretty underdeveloped at least on the stable branch. I guess this is the reason for it beeing still hidden behind the RADV_PERFTEST=gpl variable.

AMD Ray Tracing on Linux gets closer with Mesa enabling specific games
8 Jan 2023 at 7:24 pm UTC

Bought the game on steam on the last sale. I own an Radeon RX 6700XT and Doom Eternal is the first game that gives me playable results with raytracing enabled. I play the game with Ultra quality at 1080p. The RX 6700 XT is to weak to deliver playable performance in most raytracing games, this one however works very well.

Beyond All Reason is looking incredible for fans of Total Annihilation / Supreme Commander

This is great game if you are into classic RTS games on a massive scale. The linuxversion had some trouble especially on AMD GPU´s but this has been fixed for a while now. I recommend the flatpak version until the game will be available on steam in the future.

Here's how to get The Witcher 3 working on Steam Deck after the next-gen update

On my Radeon RX 6700XT with the latest stable Mesa Release Haiworks is completely broken. I had to turn it off to get geralds hair rendered at all.

AMD Radeon RX 7000 launched today for the select few able to beat the crowds

Quoting: ShmerlYeah, I've seen some reviews about coil whine. I hope Sapphire Pulse models are going to be better. Nitro+ ones are a bit too power hungry.
I have a Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 6700XT which is affected by coilwine too. More or less coilwine is an ongoing problem with GPU'S especially for the latest generations of both Nvidia and AMD. Even the more expensive series like the Sapphire Nitro series do create audible coilwine. In my case the coilwine gets audible in games where the GPU renders in the higher FPS register 100 FPS or more.

The Radeon RX 6700XT is my second AMD GPU, i used an Radeon RX 590 before. Out of the box compatibility with linuxbased desktops, easy to handle updates of the userspace drivers (MESA ) and fast fixes on the gamingfront (Steamplay/Proton) are the major sellingpoint for AMD GPU'S on linux.

However users that need good support for Videoencoding or GPU Computing are clearly way better of with an Nvidia GPU.
